Hey, after watching your video i maybe have some tipps for you. I dont know if u changed the fuelfilters recently but i would change both of them. To me it sounds like he doesnt get enough fuel by the time he wants to start. Checking the glowplugs is also a good idea. Normally this engine should start just fine with fresh plugs. Even when its -15 degrees. Greetings from Germany!

I don’t know what it is about these 80s and 90s MBs but I just love them. They are so well built and were made to last. I drive an older C Class that just keeps going but I want an even older MB like one of these. Thanks for sharing!

Please keep this car. I think it's awesome that you do videos on this car. It's in such good condition and sounds great! I picked up a 1974 240d w115 chassis as a project. It's got some bad check valves in the main fuel pump and on the injection pump fuel feed line. So I doesn't run right now, but it will. But I've got my Volvo 240 to give me something old to drive around. Y'all keep up the good work! Y'all are my favorites automotive reviewers. I've been a fan since y'all got started.

Hey Tommy. When the OM617s have cold start issues you need to test each glow plug with an electric test light. Finally remove the glow plugs and ream the hole out. The glow plug hole gets clogged with carbon deposits. Check out Kent Bergsma’s KZread site called Mercedesource. He elaborates a lot on the topic.

They make a conversion kit that is fully electronic that is much more reliable than the factory vacuum system. It's about $1000.00 but definately worth it.

    Trust your starter and battery, Tommy. Those old Mercedes inline diesels will start and run on the first turn, you just have to wait for it. Hold that key and it’ll talk to you. “Crank . . .Eh . . . Tuh . . . . . . Crank . . . Eh . . . Tuh. . . Crank-eh . . . Tuh . . . Crank-eh . . .tuh . . . Crank-eh-tuh . . . Crank-eh-tuh . . . Crank-i-tuh-crank-i-tuh-crank-i-tuh, crankity-crankity-crankity-tuh-tuh-tuh-tuh- tick-tick-tick - - (clatterclatterclatterclatter/smokesmokesmoke)”. Heck, even with a few dead glow plugs, it’ll get going.

The vacuum actuators for the climate controls do fail as they get older, as the rubber 'dries out' and then there's a loss of vacuum. Bear in mind that a diesel engine does not 'create' vacuum, and there is a vacuum pump under the hood there around the front of the engine, usually driven by a belt off the crank. Also, when 'glowing' the engine, do not hesitate once the glow light goes out, to crank the engine,,.and keep cranking it. A diesel engine needs all the heat it can get to make a start from cold. That's a beautiful looking old 300D Tommy, it must cruise the highways and byways like a dream.

That is a very pretty old Benz. It's also much less excited to start in the cold than my 62 Austin Healed sprite. Granted the high elevation out there isn't helping either.

How old are the glow plugs? You might have to inspect them and have them replaced. If only one is bad the enginne has trouble starting. Greetings from Germany.
