I lost mine to a drunk driver 😪😭 I miss it every day. Been looking for one in good condition for years in the Louisiana area.
Hey, after watching your video i maybe have some tipps for you. I dont know if u changed the fuelfilters recently but i would change both of them. To me it sounds like he doesnt get enough fuel by the time he wants to start. Checking the glowplugs is also a good idea. Normally this engine should start just fine with fresh plugs. Even when its -15 degrees. Greetings from Germany!
Love that old Benz diesel sound.
Those old glow plugs probably need replacing
Ahhh, the smell of diesel engine exhaust in the morning.
I don’t know what it is about these 80s and 90s MBs but I just love them. They are so well built and were made to last. I drive an older C Class that just keeps going but I want an even older MB like one of these. Thanks for sharing!
Hi Old Mercedes diesels needs a little throttle by cold start once a year check the glow plugs Greetz from the Netherlands
I demand more videos with 300D!
Gotta love the W123
About to buy a 1981 300D non-Turbo. Really excited for the car & these videos are inspiring!
Please keep this car. I think it's awesome that you do videos on this car. It's in such good condition and sounds great! I picked up a 1974 240d w115 chassis as a project. It's got some bad check valves in the main fuel pump and on the injection pump fuel feed line. So I doesn't run right now, but it will. But I've got my Volvo 240 to give me something old to drive around. Y'all keep up the good work! Y'all are my favorites automotive reviewers. I've been a fan since y'all got started.
I can sleep the entire day listening to its engine note ❤️
This Mercedes is just beautiful, i simply love the sound of the om617. I hope you’ll keep it stock
Nicest sedan ever made. Dream car.
In the past they made Cars, now they make Toys.
Hey Tommy. When the OM617s have cold start issues you need to test each glow plug with an electric test light. Finally remove the glow plugs and ream the hole out. The glow plug hole gets clogged with carbon deposits. Check out Kent Bergsma’s KZread site called Mercedesource. He elaborates a lot on the topic.
They make a conversion kit that is fully electronic that is much more reliable than the factory vacuum system. It's about $1000.00 but definately worth it.
Nice car! Looks to be in awesome shape
Awesome car! I have a 1985 300D euro manual, a cool car also.
It’s Tommy, knew it be awesome
Trust your starter and battery, Tommy. Those old Mercedes inline diesels will start and run on the first turn, you just have to wait for it. Hold that key and it’ll talk to you. “Crank . . .Eh . . . Tuh . . . . . . Crank . . . Eh . . . Tuh. . . Crank-eh . . . Tuh . . . Crank-eh . . .tuh . . . Crank-eh-tuh . . . Crank-eh-tuh . . . Crank-i-tuh-crank-i-tuh-crank-i-tuh, crankity-crankity-crankity-tuh-tuh-tuh-tuh- tick-tick-tick - - (clatterclatterclatterclatter/smokesmokesmoke)”. Heck, even with a few dead glow plugs, it’ll get going.
Awesome car!
Let off the key a little to soon but she runs good
The vacuum actuators for the climate controls do fail as they get older, as the rubber 'dries out' and then there's a loss of vacuum. Bear in mind that a diesel engine does not 'create' vacuum, and there is a vacuum pump under the hood there around the front of the engine, usually driven by a belt off the crank. Also, when 'glowing' the engine, do not hesitate once the glow light goes out, to crank the engine,,.and keep cranking it. A diesel engine needs all the heat it can get to make a start from cold. That's a beautiful looking old 300D Tommy, it must cruise the highways and byways like a dream.
Give some ‘fuel’ while cranking.... I would have said gas but someone On a high horse wouldn’t except the colloquial meaning
What a beautiful car. Your very lucky to have one in that condition. P.s. I saw your video on the 450sl. If you need new seats or convertible top, I highly recommend German Auto Tops.
Diesel is the best I don’t understand why we don’t like them in America they are all over the world working hard moving ppl and goods
Do you ever brings this to any of the Denver cars and coffee events?
17 in Boulder, 70 here in Jersey
That is a very pretty old Benz. It's also much less excited to start in the cold than my 62 Austin Healed sprite. Granted the high elevation out there isn't helping either.
How old are the glow plugs? You might have to inspect them and have them replaced. If only one is bad the enginne has trouble starting. Greetings from Germany.
At least you have seat heat under that MB-Tex. 🤣
I have owned many of these. Nice ones are hard to find now. Well $20k will get u one. If u were smart. U would keep this car for now on. Never sell it. Because like a jeep wagoneer the prices are going to skyrocket more. Your looks really nice. Hold on to it bro
At -8C it should start good. Do you have summer/winter diesel on pump or it is always the same?
I really want to go spend the night in a cold snowy place to see how well my rebuilt OM617 turbo diesel can start below freezing. Can report that it starts first glow no problem in our freezing SoCal weather (lowest this year was about 42 F)
I was under the impression Denver doesn’t use salt on the roads. If they do, how come Colorado vehicles seem to rust out way slower than in the Midwest?
Did this version come with the engine block heater?
Amazing car. I come from Romania and we know about these amazing car even there in western Europe.
Nice. I own an 1987 300SDL. I know exactly what you mean about harsh winters seeing i live in the North East in Connecticut. I have over 300,000 miles...and its my dailer driver. My car's name is Ms. Bailey...Check us out.
He can stay alive even after nuclear bomb at will be start in the cold nucklear winter) such a luck to drive one of them in a good condition!
If you want you can use canola cooking oil instead of diesel and it'll work fine
Noice
gotto floor it when you turning it over
Nice. Let it run until you get heat, then drive it.
-8 degres reaaly cold ???? hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha normal fall here
Beautiful old car but the emphasis is on old.
Modern peformance diesel swap.
