Will it run? Barn find 1966 Thunderbird, sitting 32 years!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Introducing a new project for the channel, our 1966 Thunderbird "Project Flarebird". This car has been sitting since 1988 (at least), and we're gonna try and get it running and driving after 32 years. It's truly a barn find, being stored inside since 1988.
The goal is to drive the car across the country on Route 66, stopping and seeing as many of the classic Americana sights along the way.
Don't forget to subscribe to our channel, and click on the bell to be notified when new videos arrive!
Thanks,
Sean, Christie, and the Auto Anatomy team

Listening to your story touches home with me so much! My father and I restore and collect classic fords together. That 51 shoebox you see in my profile pic is a car we just finished a year ago. We gave it the 51 mercury "lead sled" look. We also have a 56 thunderbird, 65 fastback, 64 Galaxie convertible, 56 crown victoria, 69 Mach 1, and a 48 coupe. It has been a dream of mine to take the route 66 path with my father in our cars as well. You are lucky you found that beautiful bird before we did....lol. I really enjoyed your video and have now subscribed to your channel. I look forward to your mustang videos as well. You seem to have a great platform for how you do your videos and give great explanations for how and what you are doing. Keep up the great work and take care during these crazy times!

Thank you so much for the kind words, and that’s a beautiful shoebox! We were looking for a long time for the right ‘bird, and got so lucky to find one close to home. I’m ready to start driving this thing, hopefully this week!

@@AutoAnatomy I can't wait to see your first drive video! Thanks for the kind words on the 51. It's one of my favorites. I know it sounds odd considering how much we customized that car but I am an authentic car guy at heart. I love original unchanged classic cars. Alot of people don't like the 51 because we "ruined" the originality of the car. You have a beautiful bird and I know you and your dad are going to have a great time and create many great memories on this trip!

This is the first time I've heard the 51 Mercury referred to as a Shoebox... I saw the car off and on over the years when watching American Grafitti, but I didn't know the model and year until a relative mentioned it. Then he told me how the top was shaved down which I found both surprising and interesting. I'll have to do some research and see how it looks compared to the original factory ones.

@@oldiesgeek454 if you take a closer look at the picture you can see we chopped the top 4 inches., Shaved the doors and redesigned the entire front end. It's a 51 ford... Not a mercury. That's why it's called a shoebox.

The color of this Thunderbird is Antique Bronze and the model is the Town Landau with the vinyl roof. The Town Hardtop had the same roofline without the vinyl roof, and there was also the plainer Hardtop Coupe and the Convertible (the Convertible can be quite valuable when restored). The 1964 to 1966 Thunderbird Coupes are still common and affordable...but restoring or replacing the numerous interior trim pieces is expensive. The Thunderbirds of the 1960s are beautifully styled with high build quality.

At some point in its life, it was repainted a slightly darker shade of gold than original. We would likely repaint it back to original color when the time is right. Thankfully most of the interior is in good condition and now that all the vacuum hoses are replaced it all functions appropriately. Thanks for checking out the videos! Sean

Hi Sean. I'm enjoying your videos. I am a huge Thunderbird fan, particularly the '64 - '66 series with the 1966 model being my favorite. I own a '66 Thunderbird Town Landau myself, it has 22,250 actual miles on it. In looking at the factory paint on your car in the engine compartment, it sure looks to me like it was Sundust Beige (color code B - on the drivers door data plate). This was a Thunderbird only paint color in 1966 and is actually quite rare. Hoping you will be posting some new videos of the Thunderbird as you continue to progress with the restoration.

Hans Petersson I thought about that. Sometimes, people just fast forward to the end of the video to see it start. My thinking was if I go ahead and show it starting 1st, maybe people won’t fast forward through the entire video. Thanks for watching!
