    Funny how the middle knob used to be turned down on a lot of amps/pedales in the 2000's. On this one it really brings the whole tone to life at 7:35. Love the tone, definitely chugs!

    I think a lot of that is the difference between passive EQ and active EQ (like this pedal has). The control at noon is the 0 setting where, with a passive EQ, all the way clockwise is 0 and everything else technically deducts from that frequency.

    I personally hate these modern, boxy, mid-range heavy tones. I always scoop my mids a bit. The guitar has an excess of midrange anyway. I find you blend into the mix a lot better without all those boxy middle frequencies.

  • @TheGuitarWorkout

    @@robertritzenthaler3775 I don't know, the day I stopped scooping mids, my tone improved a lot, and the notes were a lot more defined, especially in dense mixes ! That said I use multi band compression side chained by the snare around 200-400kHz to avoid the muddyness

    @@robertritzenthaler3775 Boxy sound comes from low mids, it all depends on the specific frequency the mid knob on what you are using is actually changing. That's why I like when gear has 2 mid knows, low and high mids. I honestly feel like that should be the standard by now

    As gimmicky as that oscilliscope might be, I've had the Mystic Edge pedal (the AC30 pedal) on my board for a while and having that has really saved me time troubleshooting when I'm not getting sound. I can 'see' if the pedal is getting any signal from before it, so it's helped me zero in on what the issue is (turn your guitar volume up, plug your guitar in, turn the amp on, duh...).

    Normal valves require high voltages to really do anything distortion-wise, which most pedals don't bother with. Nutubes operate on the same principal, but can run on tiny voltages - not a gimmick at all. But yeah, the screen is nonsense.

  • @michaelangeloh.5383

    @michaelangeloh.5383

    16 күн бұрын

    Not really nonsense. It clearly shows what the signal is doing, how much it's getting clipped and compressed. That might not be the most useful thing ever, but it's interesting to actually see what it's doing. - But they might as well just make a little window in it to show off the nutube with a light that responds to the clipping or something, even though that doesn't show as much information.

    Vox's amp sims have been pretty gnarly sounding for years. I used to practice at home with one of their metal amplugs into a small power amp and with a little playing around with the eq, you could get some very usable chuggin' metal tones.

    Sounds kickass! Didn't know Vox could make something this metal. It's somewhat pricy, but considering how feature-rich and versatile it is, it's actually very decently priced. The Copperhead Drive - from the same series of pedals - also looks, and sounds great! If you buy all four of the pedals in the series you could create an awesome four-channel Fender/Vox/Marshall/Hi-gain hybrid pedalboard amp.

    The Nutube is a vacuum tube based on a vacuum fluorescent display. I have built a few circuits with it and they sound "ok". @michaelangeloh.538316 күн бұрын

    Um, no, the Nutube-tech isn't a gimmick. It's also not "pretend legit", it IS a legitimate analog circuit that has elements of a vacuum tube. - However, it was invented for, or at least expected to be used for, hi-fi stuff, a long time ago as well, but it made its way into designs for guitar-equipment. That's all there's to it, and for all I care it helps the sound. - I think the oscillator thing can also be useful in terms of showing how much it clips and compressed, which it does show. Though, yea, it's one of things you could just use your ears for, but it's interesting to see what it does at least. - They might as well just make a little window to show off the nutube component with a little light-glow and perhaps implement a clipping-light to show the activity of the gain or whatever. They do that in headphone-amplifiers and such as well. But the cost would probably stay pretty much the same. I also don't know if it would even reduce it by 30 bucks if they'd leave out the screen.

If you combine that with a regular overdrive circuit (diodes) then you can blend it any way you'd like. And I think that's what Vox tried here. Sounds great, to be honest!! I’ve got an old bogan challenger tube pa head that I use as a power amp.... it sounds great & clean as a pedal platform .... I’d love to try this thing in front as a preamp

    That’s a pretty cool pedal. I agree they should’ve added another foot switch (Lead/Rhythm) that strips the tight function back as well as the gain for better leads that way you can switch back and forth more easily. You could also make it multi-function so when it’s in the clean function you can get 2 different clean tones. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Nice Peter Sellers reference. I wonder how many of your regular subscribers would even get it. Damn that pedal sounds good too.

    I like the sound a lot. I had a couple of the old vox modeling amps, and they were really good. I would have assumed they could do pedals as well. I may have to get one, AFTER I get my solar x shape. 😉
