Will I trade in my 2019 Speed Twin?? New 2021 Triumph Speed Twin unveiled

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Triumph have finally unveiled an updated version of my beloved Speed Twin for 2021. In addition to the expected Euro5 compliance, new paint jobs, and price hike, they've also worked in updates to the suspension, brakes, and engine. These changes will no doubt improve the motorcycle, but are they enough to make me want to trade in my bike for the new model? Watch and find out, as we go over how the new 2021 Speed Twin differs from my 2019, and what those differences would mean for me.

Inverted forks are stronger, more rigid and lighter resulting in a more stable and responsive front end. I think they look better, more muscular. The M50 calipers are superior to the previous model which I was surprised you didn't spend more time on. Stickier rubber always improves handling characteristics and rider confidence so it's an easy way for Triumph to upgrade handling. Will the Racetec's last as long as the Rosso's? No way but hit the curves hot and enjoy life on two wheels while they last. The suspension is clearly spec'd to keep price down, want Ohlins? Especially on the rear? Buy them after market, they're less that $1k and it doesn't get any easier to install a set than on this bike. This bike definitely needs a factory quickshifter option. After seeing the 2021 model and knowing the changes Triumph made, I wouldn't even consider the previous model.

I did forget to get into the brakes, but I'm really happy about that upgrade. Seems like a no-brainer since Triumph already put the M50 on a few other bikes. Most of the changes they made will definitely make the sportbike riders happier; it's the all-round riders like me who really weren't asking for the tires to be stickier and less versatile. A quick shifter would be awesome though, I wonder if they're planning to add it to the Thruxton.

I ride hard, so I for one am thrilled at the racetec rr’s. You’ve got to take profile into consideration when you’re talking about tire choice. They sharpened up so many facets of the agility and handling of the bike they would most certainly want to put the sharpest handling tire on it. The pirelli super corsa that came on my 765rs were such a tremendous tire for what it was designed for. Just not wet or cold haha. The k3 rr is a much more suited all around tire, the k1 and k2 are the ones you’re thinking about being “supersport” tires. I am thrilled with the brake upgrades as the m50’s are a tremendous caliper and them being radially mounted will help even more with bite and feel. The stylemas on my 765rs are the best feeling brakes I’ve ever felt ( mostly coming from the master cylinder but that’s an easy upgrade to do in the S2). I’m not thrilled about the shocks and will be replacing them ASAP, idk if I’ll go with the ohlins tho because I won’t be needing that much out of them for the street. I got the red hopper and it’s absolutely beautiful I want to find some brushed aluminum side covers or at least flat black I think it would suit the bike a bit better. If I had a complaint it would be the stock seat. Of course I’ve never had a bike that I’ve enjoyed the stock seat on so cest la vie

Agree with your comments 100%. Not enough improvements to tempt me away from my 2019 model. Engine tweaks were probably needed for Euro 5. As far as I’m concerned, the only other changes needed were better front and rear suspension. (Full adjustability). I bought my 2019 to recapture the feeling of my first experiences of 1960’s parallel twins. Did it perfectly !

Totally agree with your analysis. I own a 2019, and will eventually upgrade the suspension and exhaust as opposed to trading it in. What we are looking for in an updated Speed Twin will probably arrive in a few years when a new model arrives. That said, kudos to Triumph for the mid-life upgrade.

the 2019 gray version is the most beautiful Speed Twin. The new 2021 colors and tanks, rims and shocks are a bit uglier. I'm sure the new version is better in terms of performance, but it is uglier in my opinion. Enjoy your Speed Twin 2019, now it's a a unicorn!

Don't like the new paint job. Don't like the look of the USD forks and front mudguard, think the whole aesthetic has been downgraded. I'm glad I got my '19 model when I did. They seem to have done a half way job to an R model, which I think is what people were wanting.

    5) Engine: Well, I dont think Triumph was heavily aming for a 3 PS gain, or the torque peak 500 revs earlier. They wanted to go Euro 5 compliant, and prevent the bike or better engine from beeing worse. While doing so, it came out that they could go and improve the engine very very slightly. I dont cheer for the improvments, I wasnt asking for it, but as the need and reasoning was Euro 5 - I dont blame Triumüph on this - well done.

I agree for the most part. The updates are not enough to get me to trade in my 2019. I do like the paint scheme and I think the brake upgrade is definitely a positive. I think the best part of the engine upgrades are the additional 500 RPM on top as I find the motor kind of asthmatic compared to similar sized twins. (I have a 2009 Monster 1100 that leaves the SP for dead in roll on's). You are absolutely correct on the tyres......just no need for the RR's except for PR puroses. Overall look is still good but as you said, the R and D would have gone to better use with worthwhile suspension upgrades. Just not enough improvement to justify trading but I think new buyers will be happy.

I have the same model as you and have ridden the new one. One modification you didn’t mention was the improved steering geometry, which I felt improved the handling. And the new front brakes don’t squeak! Like you, I agree that the changes aren’t sufficient to justify an upgrade. Most of the reviews I’ve seen make the same suggestions. Let’s hope they influence the next iteration of this fabulous bike. I would like to see adjustable suspension, a quick-shifter and self-cancelling indicators. I can’t find any mention of an upgrade being planned but, with a bike as good as this to enjoy, I’m prepared to be patient! I’ve added a fuel booster, larger airbox, throttle spacer, bar-raisers, Lance and Hines exhaust, adjustable footpegs and levers, bar ends, paddock stand bobbins and a luggage rack. Next will be a Dinali Soundbomb.

@@VanBlamm The bar risers, adjustable pegs and levers were all from TECBIKEPARTS. The risers are only 20mm, but cheap, easy to fit and sufficient to transform the ride from my perspective. They have taken the weight off my wrists and I have ridden 150 miles in a day with no problems. I needed to adjust the pegs, because I bought a new pair of Rokker boots that were to fat for me to change gear. The pegs were easy to fit (unlike the levers!), do a good job and look great. Keep up the good work! Thanks!

Triumph should make a speed twin r with the best Ohlins suspension, best Brembo brakes, a 1250cc engine with 110 horsepower, and more weight reductions. They can make a limited pre sale run of the bike every year. Triumph should also put the catalytic converter in the slip on and not under the bike. This could stiffen the frame up a bit by having a solid tubular vs bolt together. The current speed twin, I own one, is still the coolest retro bike by far and performs well.

@@ArtHelm I said limited edition Art and keep the standard model also. It could sale for the same price as a Thruxton R. Triumph needs to bump up the power to at least 110 like the BMW R on 9. Just increase the displacement on the current engine to 1,250. The new water cooled Sportsters are going to be released soon and they are claiming 120 HP and around 500 pounds. Allot of competition out there.

@@truthcrusader4521 yeah, you can do anything if you throw enough money at it. But you don't need to have a cafe racer that does more, and weighs more. My last bike had very similar power numbers. I would ring-it-out all the time. A cafe racer with a high center of gravity is not designed to do more. I would put a word class suspension on it and call it a day.

  • @truthcrusader4521

@@ArtHelmThe Triumph Speed Twin will have the advantage of being thirty plus pounds lighter then the new Sportsters and have the history and cool factor of being the original cafe racer. Not to mention the Sportster was no match for the Triumph line of bikes in their heyday. The only way I will get rid of my current Speed Twin is if an improved model comes out or to many miles pile up. Triumph will probably not come out with an R version of the Speed Twin due the possibility of loosing sales on the Thruxton. I may just get the new 2021 Speed Twin and buy the Thruxton rear shocks for it. I had a thruxton and it was a good bike but I got rid of it when the Speed Twin came out. I liked the look better and more comfortable riding position. Boring the current engine out to a 1,250 should not increase the weight. 110 horse power is what BMW cafe racers have and they are air cooled. The Speed Twins advantage over the BMW is it weighs allot less. Make the horse power even and the Speed twin is the clear winner.

I 100% agree with your assessment. After purchasing my 2019 ST (silver like yours) it didn’t take long for me to decide it is a long-term keeper; so i have made a number of upgrades that , though costly, are worthwhile in the context of my long-term ownership intentions. My most costly upgrade is Nitron suspension front and rear, and i have also installed Vance & Hines cans, x-pipe, and a few other things to fine-tune the performance and look of the bike. At this point, trading in for the 2021 would be a big step backwards. I have no regrets.

Performance improvements are a plus, but for the looks I'm glad I have my 2020 model. I feel like the new fork and brakes are crossing wires - they look great in isolation but somehow not what I wanted on a ST, or at least a non-R version. The best part of the original bike IMO was the subtle-looking performance gains over the other Bonnies while retaining the classic looks. Actually glad they changed the tank to something different and slightly worse - makes the original that much more special!

Power/torque increases, why not? If they're fiddling to get through Euro 5 I imagine there was a fair bit of untapped potential in that under-stressed engine. I'd prefer the old forks for looks, with better internals. Rear shocks - I've not been bothered enough to change them on my 2019 yet. A LED light might have been good and perhaps a little more saddle padding. I've always wished the ST had cruise control; it's on the T120 so might have been an easy upgrade or option at least. I wonder if the M50's will cure the all-to-common brake squeal? Tyres - agree with you 100%.

I'm liking the idea of cruise control more and more these days, but I suspect Triumph want to preserve the T120's position as the "luxury Bonnie," even though it would cost them almost nothing to add it to the Speed Twin. I agree that the current and new models are both spectacular, but some of the upgrades feel like click bait. Specifically the front suspension and tires. If anyone was to ask me what the most significant upgrade is, I'd say it is the radial mounted calipers. Legitimate upgrade there.

If you compare what you get in parts with a Street Triple R (breaks, shocks, etc.) i think Triumph could have put at least a little better parts on the Speed Twin already 2019. Now with the upgrade, the went 30%+ of the distance, but not the full way. Breaks M50: super, Marzocci forks: Sound good enough to me (same as Showa - I dont need Ölins all the time). To suid buyers expectations best, the should have made the standard version maybe 200 pounds more expensive, but go to adjustable forks and a little better shocks PLUS offer an R version and I dont know - 800 pounds more than the standard and equip that with full Ölins?

I was REALLY hoping to see 1) rear shock upgrade (you can't adjust the preload on the '19-'20 shock because the pipes are in the way - big design flaw); 2) Standard heated grips; 3) Std or optional CRUISE CONTROL - I mean, c'mon, man, we're touring on our ST's! and 4) Color options like British racing green or blue. I agree the engine mods aren't worth the R&D money. 3 more ponies and 500 revs aren't worth the trad-off for less range due to higher fuel consumption. And the tires? Who the F cares. The 2021 is still just as attractive as the last gen, but I'll stick with my gorgeous 2020 red devil!!

@@jaylongo8332 If you’re looking at that price range you should consider the Nitron models. They do a ‘non reservoir’ model with combined compression/rebound adjuster in addition to preload. I’m pretty sure that’s going to be my choice when I get around to it. I’ve had the basic Ohlins in the past. The quality I’d good but rebound and preload can be a bit constricting depending on how you ride and differing road surfaces. In Europe the extra adjustability can be very useful as I’ve had to re calibrate the suspension two or three times a day when touring mainland Europe. Especially when in and out of mountain roads. However I know from experience that your main roads are in better condition than in the UK and I’m guessing that your mountain roads are better too so perhaps ‘ultimate adjustability’ isn’t quite the necessity that it is over here.

The Metzler RR tire choice is absurd. A lot of companies are "over-tiring" their bikes IMHO. Sticky race tires on a retro bike with 99hp? If people want to track their bikes, they'll change the tires. We don't need them to come with it as stock. I wouldn't even put them on the Speed Triple 1200, but it would be more understandable at least. Enjoy the horrible tire life because you'll be replacing those soon! Also, no adjustable suspension? Very strange. I bought an Aprilia Tuono 1100RR for $13K, only $500 more than I can get a new speed twin for. For that $500 I'm getting fully adjustable upside down Sachs front suspension, a fully adjustable Sachs piggyback monoshock, a Bosch 5 axis IMO, a Color TFT dash, Cornering ABS, wheelie control, launch control, rear lift control, traction control, Brembo M50 calipers on Brembo 320mm discs with a Brembo Master cylinder, a Brembo rear caliper and disc, a 200mm rear tire, a 175 hp V4 with titanium valves, an insane soundtrack, 15lbs lighter, and Rosso III tires which might have some longevity to them. The thing is a complete animal. I love the look of the Triumphs, and it would be cool to have a bike that's a little less "Attack everything like a Lion or don't go at all" to it, something easy and smooth to ride, but I'm trying to see the value here. What I'd like to see is fully adjustable front suspension, Ohlins piggybacks on the rear, with a nice set of lightweight spoked wheels and a slightly lower seat height. I'm over 6', but this is a classic bike and it should look that way, IMO. If people wanted a race bike, they'd buy something else. And screw Euro anything. Who the hell are they? The only difference they're making in this world is ruining the enjoyment of motorcyclists the world over. Regulating motorcycles is like removing 5 lbs of sand from the oceans of the world and thinking you made a difference.

And I am not an Aventure bike fan. And I absolutely hate the new tire option and front fenders.. I think mine (same as yours, just 2020) is just as good as the new one... You are so right, man. Very well said, thanks! Although, I guess the Euro5 changes are something Triumph had to address for 2021. The peak power boost of 3 PS is most likely a side effect of the modifications they had to make to meet Euro5 compliance. I'm planning on trading my MT09 RN43 for a modern classic roadster next year. And the BMW R nineT and the Triumph Speed Twin are those on top of the list. BMW's 1200 air/oil cooled boxer engine gives the R nineT the extra points to get to the top of my list. Having ridden a friend's Speed Twin for a bit, I kinda know how good the Speed Twin is. For me, an update I would have loved to see on the 2021 Speed Twin would be the cornering ABS. The rear shock is something I could upgrade myself. That said, if I'm getting brand new of either bikes next year, I'm probably going for the R nineT pure - not just because I'm in Germany. Heh, if you're using a bike to ride on public roads, you don't want expensive Ohlins. Most of them are sprung like a brick to haul ass around finely manicured European racetracks. I have a Thruxton, weigh a lot and thought the Thruxton R felt like it was sprung with bricks. Even my regular Thruxton was overly harsh. I ended up putting Wilbur's touring shocks on the back and putting a 5W oil in the forks. Works beautifully now and I can ride it as hard as I like at sub jail speeds and it behaves beautifully now. Slightly taut, but still all day comfy. Totally agree with the tires. But they're just adding things salesman can tell kids to get them to part with their money. Honestly, I'm not crazy about the Michelin's you're using either. A sport TOURING tire should have some rain grooves on the edges of the tires. When it rains in the mountains, I'm not going to stop leaning the bike around the corners. Running slicks on wet streets ain't my idea of a good time.

Triumph need to do an R version with Ohlins and a tune

  • @rickslijkhuis6822
    @rickslijkhuis68223 жыл бұрын

You'll be better off with buying a 2019 Speed Twin, upgrade the suspension and get a better tune through TuneECU on it. You can even have the extra 500 rpm by unlocking it in the software of the 2019 version. The Euro 5 emissions will probably make the bike run worse in lower rpm.

I see now there is a difference of what I would like a loved company to do, to what would suits the market better. I have said it here a lot of times, that I was expecting, desiring and lusting for a Speed Twin R. So I felt really frustrated with the new speed twin. I was rooting for the golden inverted front forks and the piggy back rear shocks, just because it would make this a SPECTACULAR motorcycle to behold, comparable in quality/features with nineT (original black) and with thruxton R in performance. Now that I saw what they did I kind of agree with Triumph. Contrary to the niche "trhuxton" that is almost in race territory, low distance, hard and fast rides, this is a all rounder machine that has to cater to the volume side of sales. It is no secret that this is the most sold machine of all the retro themed motorcycles, and that is due to the relative "low" price, and all rounder character with beautiful styling. Moving this machine into thruxton R price territory, adding to it the Thruxton R suspension and other bits, it would transform it into a (more) niche machine. It really would be easy for Triumph to do it, as most parts are all "compatible", and taht is in part why we were expecting it.. but would it have made a (comercial) point? not really... and never forget... you can just do that transformation at home. I am doing all I can to get me a 2021 Speedtwin. But off course... If I can get me a 2019 second hand for a good price, I already know what bits and pieces I will change first.

You make a good point. Triumph doesn't spec out bikes as a public service to us, they do it to make money. A Speed Twin R would take very little effort for them to build & sell, but that doesn't mean it'd net them a profit once you factor in that they also sell the Thruxton R.

Point per point: 1) Tires: It completely dont get it why they put Metzeler Racetec RR on it? As you said, a switch down from "sports" (Rosso III, Metzler M9RR, etc.) to Sport-Touring (Michelin Road 5, Metzeler Roadtec SE 01, etc.) would be greta, but okay, even putting on again a "normal" sports tire - fine. But not, the went for a Hypersport-tires with tendency to RACE. Just ... why? The Racetec RR is for sure not cheap. Less then the fast wear out what bugs me is: The Racetec is super poor if it ever rains, but even worse: Its also worse then Sport and Sport-Tourer tires while day temperature is below 25 degree (or you need to very agressive push the tire to heat it up).Again: Why? Run it down in 3.000km/2000 miles - have poor experience and then take better SPEED TWIN matching tire? Stuipd from Triumph ...

GREAT point! I ride my Speed Twin in hot or cold weather, rain or shine. New buyers getting the Racetecs will have to stay home (or go extra slow) on many of the days that I can ride my bike normally.

I'm looking to buy a speed twin, but I also will be buying a pre 2021 model. It just looks better, OK yes the power is up by 3hp, but there are 3 cats in the pipes now. Doesn't feel like much of an improvement, just compliance for sales in the European market.

Depending how good a deal I could get on the old model would make the decision for me. Enough of a discount would pay for top notch suspension, some better looking cans (possibly from a thruxton or after market) and maybe a new paint job as I'm in the trade and have a mate that designed and paints British Superbikes for a local team.

  • @VanBlamm

That's a good point about discounted older Speed Twins. Based on how little was changed, one may not need to find that big of a discount on a leftover 2020 to justify buying it over a 2021.

@@VanBlamm the new one definitely seems better but a couple of grand discount means you could make the old bike better than the new one, depending on what you require. For less than that you could get suspension built to suit the rider. It's not a sports bike and I feel the performance improvements won't mean much on the road. Loving your channel too, it's great to see the USA from a bikers perspective as I'm unlikely to get there and do it myself. Keep up the great work 😀👍

That's actually a tough question, and will depend on how valuable each potential buyer thinks the improvements are. I'd say if the difference is less than $1,000 US, go with the 2021. If a 2020 is more than a grand cheaper though, get that and put the difference towards any mods you feel it actually needs.
