Will I regret asking for help? | The Handmade Tiles Project
Week three on Amy's ambitious project to make bathroom tiles for the chateau from scratch and Marc decides to get involved. Unfortunately he brings the cat too...
We are Marc, Amy, Clement and Juliette, a French-English family restoring a 33 room medieval chateau and huge estate in southern France. Follow our award-winning, historically-sensitive restorations and our journey towards self-sufficiency and sustainability, with plenty of laughter along the way.
AD: This week we are partnering with online language school Lingoda. Amy has been taking much-needed French lessons with them and is so happy with her progress. Choose lessons at almost any time of the day or night with real French teachers and just 3-5 other students in the class. The syllabus is set by Lingoda and you are encouraged to make regular and consistent progress with the motivation of real teachers and classmates. Lingoda have a very special sprint challenge, where you can sign up to complete 30 or 60 classes within a specific time frame, and if you complete the challenge you get 50% or 100% cash back. Seems like some pretty good motivation. Sign up with try.lingoda.com/ChroniclesOfR... and use the exclusive discount code AMYSPRINT if you like what you see. You might just find yourself in a class with Amy one day!

Sprinkle a few of Marc’s designs amongst the finished tile designs for a bit of fun ;)

Or incorporate them once in a while secretly in your formal design so people (and children) will have fun hunting for them. Surely there’s a tradition of hidden gargoyles and angels to draw upon? Any way, envisioning one of Marc’s silly little wise faces peering through the leaves is giving me pleasure, whether it’s done actually or not. Much love to you both and thanks to you for demonstrating how one can fully own one’s dear project and make room and still be protective of the vision. Wow, Amy. I mean it. Wow. Some day maybe you can talk about your flexibility and precision. Seems a remarkable dance. You seem to me to choose enormously creative projects, go at it full tilt enjoying the research and undaunted by challenges, and then, somehow not get slammed by the need to control or have it be perfect. I think these must be attributes of a creative being who knows how to enjoy herself. I’d love to hear your thoughts one day.❤
I like Marcs version! We all need something to laugh in these tense times.
Next time you go to a Chinese restaurant, take home some wooden chopsticks. They come in very handy for stirring things. You're doing such a good job. Really enjoyed this one.
marc and the cat hilarious!
Are you happy you asked Marc to join in? I’m laughing at how similar he is to Clement (a child) while you have been putting so much disciplined time into getting it right. Between Marc and the cat…but you are both so great together. There are a lot of reasons for you to be proud of yourself, you look great, the tiles, learning French, running, your videos are very professional and extremely enjoyable, you are growing subscribers, and you are so good in front of the camera. Looking forward to seeing the progress of the tiles. xx

It is really surprising that he is so goofy & funny when it's something serious but not his interest. Then observe him when talking about the history or agriculture of the property & his seriousness sets in! He is such an enigma! She is so flexible! They are so perfect together💖
Definitely a Labour of love! I’m looking forward to seeing the next stage! The cat! 😂
Hooray, Juliette has finally made it into the intro ❤

What a beautiful little girl Juliette is and of course Clement is just darling. Amy, I really enjoyed you and Marks interaction when you were designing the tiles. …. both your senses of humor compliment each other and it’s just lovely how tolerant you are of Marks “nonsense.” Yes, I totally understand … your patience knows no bounds. 😜 Love your channel and still watching from PA, USA.
I wish I could be there with you, this is something I’ve always longed to do. I don’t know if it’s an longing to emerge my hands into dirt/soil etc I don’t know, but what your doing, so totally appeals on many levels. Thank you for your sharing of your vlogs, love them. And Marc I idolised your humour and your puns, are simply amazing. Lmao 😜 You crack me up.

Maybe this is a business idea. If Amy Hines her skills she can teach others how to do it.
Amy, how do you get anything done with three naughty boys! Marc, Clement and now the kitten! 😂
Kilroy was here! Well done, Marc 😆.
Might I suggest, when scraping the tile, start in the middle to avoid mixing the colors. This only would pertain to the experiments where you are currently combining different techniques on one tile. When you're at the final stage & working with the end product you probably will want to scrape end to end. Experiments is just to avoid contamination of tests. Your dedication is impressive & obvious of your archaeological training! The endless data & meticulous samples, Just Wow! All that & 3 kids to keep track of (Mark's the 3rd)💖
I just love you and Mark together Amy, your so funny together and you Amy have the patience of a saint, Mark is like a naughty boy, he’s adorable, I love watching you being creative Amy, the tiles are going to be amazing I just know it, I’m going to sit on the fence here and say I love both your tiles, it won’t be long Amy till your an expert tile designer, love your channel and all of you, xxxxxxxxxxxx😘❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I can’t wait to see the colours when they are fired. I love your approach to finding patterns and researching the techniques and I’m looking forward to the next stage. You and Marc are so funny together - totally brightens my day!
Kittens re a joy and a pain- I can’t imagine trying out your tile decorations with his help.
Fun video, love the interaction between you two and the playful kitten, made me 😆. Loved the detailed experiments. ❤
Yes Marc, that is a threat! Such a great video. Very impressed Amy and wished we could have chatted live about progress, techniques and your curious chat!
Amy, you're such a precise worker plus the most patient woman imaginable ❣️
If you are making your own tiles (as you are) making them SUPER uniquely (like Marc's tile) is my preference with them hidden here and there among more traditional tiles. It will make people smile and it shows pops of your personalities.
Totally Amazing Amy I am sure the tiles for the bathroom will be gorgeous and the fact they will be one of a kind is precious
Oh my ❤️. When your kitty started kneading your shoulder, I just melted.
I like “Marc was here”…..❤
Hello from Queensland Australia. I’m enjoying the tile saga, can’t wait to see the results.
I am so impressed Amy! The tile project is truly coming along. I am very excited to see your final results. I give Marc credit too - a loyal helpful support. Kitty is sweet & just curious....needs a playmate. Until next time....enjoy each day. 🤗👍
I have been watching many of the DIY Vlogs this past 2 months while I am waiting for surgery. I started breaking the rules in DIY over 65 years ago and really enjoy seeing others that are willing to do the same. I so enjoy seeing the two of you also breaking the boundaries of several crafts. Please keep having fun with your projects and allowing us to see how you do this.
Love that marc is a balance to you. I like both the 2 tiles and see marc putting this up later sometime in the house to be found. Great job
Hi , I do like Mark’s .but it is very impressive how much research you are doing.
I really like to watch you two interact. Very FUNNY.
Enjoyed. You and Marc are so awesome. Your tile decorating is coming along nicely.
Marc doodles exactly resemble the doodles we made here in Pennsylvania as children 😂 The dog we named “Muffin” and of course Ziggy with the nose!
Marc’s tile is humorous, but I prefer yours for a bathroom. I would still put it in the bathroom, just among your tiles if you go that route. You sure have the patience in all that you are doing to get the colors and design you want.
Amy, you are like a scientist preparing your exact formulas. I like both your designs, but I find Marc's so funny and irresistible. Love you guys so much. It is such a joy to watch all the time.🥰
New kitten? Very sweet
I love your experiments! What a great help your cat is 🙀😁
Your cat(project manager) was definitely micromanaging 😂😂😂 Love Marc’s sense of humor. I like the ones you did especially the flower and scroll. Thanks for sharing 😍😘
All I can say is “ I love the two of you”!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
Tiles with smiles! Albeit at one point I wasn't sure if Marc was cuddling the Kitty or strangling it🤭😄.
I think you should add some of Marc's tiles into the design just to make people smile. With that being said, I cant imagine making as many tiles as you need to make. Wow what a task!!
Really enjoying seeing your progression with the tile project. All of your patience and documentation is (so necessary) so admirable.
I love this. I can’t wait to see how everything turns out and evolves. This is something I would love to do. Thank you Love the kitty hehe
You can see the love between the two of you ❤ how thoughtful of you to ask him to assist, patience is definitely needed…..
I love the interaction between the two of you!, I absolutely love watching you do this huge creative thing, I also loved the Kitty LOL.
Good going Amy! Testing and playing is all about learning, does not come easy! 🇨🇦❤️
Lovely to see all four of you in the intro…
I am really enjoying the series with the tiles! Keep them up! And you are doing a great job even with Marc and the Cat as helpers.

Instead of carving all the tiles, why not make a stamp to use out of wood and rubber. Would save so much time and not bits to pick off. Love artistry but the more details makes the work a much longer project. I really liked the green tiles you made earlier as true handcrafted tiles were imperfect but that adds to the beauty and the artisan look
I'm enjoying learning about the process of designing your own tiles AND your cat and Marc made it all so fun to watch.
I really like the Kilroy was here tile that Marc did. Super cool.
You too are so fun to watch. I have to admit I love Marc’s tile, very cute. love your little kitten wanting to be part of the video. You sure are doing a lot of prep work to make your home made tiles. I am sure they will be beautiful.
Amy ... This is a fabulous project. How fun ! Regarding the question of Killroy ... Would your (too like mine) hubby push his luck even more, if you included just one of his creations in the finished bathroom? You could tuck Mr. Killroy in an unlikely place & make it a challenge for anyone using the room, to find him ... 😄😂
Very interesting to learn about the tile making. Never knew there were so many different techniques and so many variations you can use
Ha ha ha! I had to laugh out loud when you and Marc were starting out with the slip pigments, Amy! And then your sweet little kitten appears purring on your shoulder! 🤣 And Marc's designs....nnnnnnoooo! I like yours! And I loved the graffito version in blue. Lovely! Thanks for making this video. I laughed along with you. Next video let's hear you say something in French! ❤
I enjoy watching you two whatever you do and especially when Amy gives Mark a kiss on the cheek.
You and Marc are hillarious. Also the cat did a great cameo appearance. Sorry but my vote was for Marc. Use that tile and frame it! Overall though it is interesting to see your technique and I look forward to seeing how they turn out. Amy, good for you to learn French. I have been married to a Spanish man 23 years. I did try a couple of in class Spanish and also duolingo but no I am not fluent either. I think it is an age thing but I do understand Spanish when spoken. Good for you to also start running. Your looking great by the way.
I was fully expecting to see kitty paw prints on Marc's tile! I really the scraffito effect, Can't wait to see what it looks like glazed! I think you're onto something there Amy! I love your colour pallet, you're getting some beautiful shades with the pigments. Exciting stuff! I'm loving the progression. Much love and big hugs xx
This is fascinating! ♥️♥️♥️ The cat is hilarious - sweet face and a mischievous soul, encouraged by mischievous Marc. I’m wondering: A) Will you be sanding the ones that are a bit lumpy? B) Is it possible to lightly sand the lumpy ones before you do the scrafito, so that the initial texture is smoother. The Greek vases 🏺 look quite smooth, so there must be a method. C) Would it be possible to grind the clay more smoothly, or perhaps use a sieve, to start out with a more consistent powder? I’ve been working on landscaping in my yard the past few days, and 4”/10cm down I hit almost pure clay, and with the drought the past couple years I’ve been having to crush it in order to change the slope of the space (in an effort to retain more water and not have it simply roll off to the street on the rare occasions we get rain). The purest lumps are literally rock hard, but when I apply steady pressure when placing the lump between a steel trowel and a flat concrete block, it looks like a flattened lump of clay, but when I brush it into the area I’m working on, it becomes a fine powder (no teeny lumps). That wasn’t my aim, but that’s what happened. I’m heading out to do another section - I’ll try some small experiments on a more consistent alternative to bashing and let you know the results. Since clay particles are flat, I’m assuming that the steady pressure is breaking the bonds between layers, while bashing is more like an earthquake, creating fault lines and breaking the initial lump into very small lump, going for the weaker side-to-side bond between clay particles and leaving alone more of the stronger connections between the flat surfaces. (At least, my mental powerful microscope visualizes that action.) 🤔 🧠⛈ I’ll do one test with my rolling pin (in a plastic bag), to see whether bashed lumps can be quickly and efficiently processed to a finer consistency using the pressure method. Maybe with a board (also covered in plastic so it’s non-porous) underneath so I’m not contending with the relatively but not perfectly smooth surface of a concrete block. P.S. I’d love to use stone for retaining walls like you, but it’s very expensive, and so I’m trying to re-use materials instead. Hehehe, I could make my own bricks if I had the time, and if washing the clay was an easier process. (I could rent time in a kiln not far from me.)
Very fun! I do like the comic relief provided by Marc's tile. 🤣 I would use both styles. Marc's would be fun to mix in to the tile work in a powder room or bathroom used by guests. It would add an element of surprise and make a good conversation piece. Cheers-
Please, put Marc’s silly tile somewhere. It would be fun to be a visitor and try and find it. I’ve just discovered your channel and I am enjoying your adventures very much. Your family is lovely.
Amy how do you cope with Marc, he is a proper tease. Love your dedication to making the tile decor.
Exciting 🎉 great project 🌟🌟🌟🌞🌺🌞
The kitten is so sweet. What is his name? He really wanted to help out. 🐱😉 Marc's tile gets my vote. Well at least to use one someplace just for a smile. Yours are very sophisticated. Good luck.
Interesting--and what an infectious laugh!

Exhausting watching the challenge of tile decorating you've set yourselves, I'm definitely with Mark on this, keep it simple and humourous, so his sample gets my vote 😏
What a fun video of you both interacting. Thank you, Amy. Setting goals like getting better at a language is so great. Keep it up.
Bravo ! Lovely project. All the best for you all
I really like the leaf print using the leaves. I cannot remember which episode it was on Chateau DIY but someone had a fire surround with vine leaves imprinted in plaster to create a design.
Booth tiles are nice in their own way.😀
Perhaps a metal comb would help produce wavy parallel lines for the sgrafitto technique.
I love you and Marc’s chemistry.
I like Marc’s. In fact it would be nice to have silly fun tiles in the children’s bathroom. You can purchase a set of dental tools from the big online store, or even ask your dentist for old discarded ones. They are great for carving in ceramics. Question: Is your kiln electric or gas? Thank you.

Great idea - our friend is a dental nurse! It’s an electric kiln.
I like both your tiles. If you actually use Marc's the children will get a kick out of his. Your's is lovely, you are extremely talented. Marc is, too, but he loves to be ornery and playful. I simply love both of you. Janice from Arkansas USA
Love the cat 🐈 star 🌟 of the video lols
Amy, I love your outfit and tights. You have far more patience than I do BUT your tiles will be something your great grandchildren will point to with pride and say, ‘My grandmother made those.’ Love your vlog.
I like both designs!
To be honest, I like both designs, however, Marc's tile would be for a chid's bathroom and yours (Juliette) is more artistically graphic. Juliette has my vote.
Marc, my dad used to draw „Killroy was here“, the same character you drew.
You could also find a mosaic pattern you like and cut the tiles accordingly. Painting them in separate colors. The design is in the placement of the tiles. You could make a stamp of fired clay to make an imprint that would be easily repeated. I studied ceramics and pot making in college. Looking formward to your personalized tiles.
As soon as I saw a kitten in the background I knew it would be joining in!!!!!! I am loving this, also had already an ambition to learn, now I can just watch and learn, I don't envy you, especially with such a mischievous husband like Mark. WCL
BEST WISHES TO YOU
This video just has everything: excellent entertainment in form of a curious kitten and hilarious banter as well as informative content on ceramic tiles. What is there more to ask for ?

Just started watching your channel when I saw the Advent series. Going back now and watching your tile video. Love your family. Always so joyful.
I luv them all ❤
I love your videos. I have just recently discovered you. I live in North Georgia, USA ❤️
Great project, look forward to see it progress
Marc needs to add the words, "Kilroy was here," to his tile. There is an interesting history behind it, if you'd care to look it up. Perhaps he should instead say, "Marc was here."
I love marc tile.i hope you use it some where in the chateau. Be a shame not to use them
Love the updated intro!
The cat!!!😍
Amy you are a true artist!
7:15 Hi, I'm Jumpy the Cat ! 😺🐱
Your relationship is delightful…….❤……..I want to vote for Marc, only because he is so cheeky….. Not because he has artistic abilities😂😂😂 God bless you four❤
Marc….superb effort! I love your designs. So much fun….x Dottie
I really enjoyed the video! It was fun to see you both work on the tiles.Thank you for creating such delightful films! Love from Vermont
So much work for each step!!! 🎉
Lovely show....you two are soooooooo funny.I enjoy your show so much!!!!
How adorable you two are.
Am so enjoying these videos on the clay tiles... Hoping to get inspiration from you, and ideas. Thanks.. You both are so funny together!
Could some very small, low profile(thinner than the tiles) clamps help hold the tiles in place while you scrape them? Maybe, the man who made your tile clay “roller” could make some. (Random thought) I think your archeology background helps you make those meticulous notes. I don’t think I would have the patience.😊🤓🥰
