I love this book. One thing I absolutely hate about modern comics, especially from DC and Marvel and as well as some indie creators, is the walls of text. This book really pushes the Graphic Novel as a visual medium. "Graphic" being the key word. Modern creators tend to forget this. You look up and down the page to get the full feel, not just panel by panel, word ballon by word ballon. You pick up something by Scott Snyder and he just chokes his books with text. then you go back an read someone else considered a good writer like Allan Moore, and you see how he works with the artist to create a visual experience. That why I such a huge fan of both of you. You books speak to me visually. Like a good comic book should.

I saw Steve Lieber at a comic con in Portland last year. He is still spending a ton of time giving young artists advice and review their portfolios. Super great guy.

Seeing this again reminded me of Matt Madden's "99 Ways to Tell a Story" where he tells the same one-page story 99 different ways, exploring style, layout, mood, etc. I thought it was masterful expansion of what Eisner touches on here, demonstrating the endless possibilities to approach storytelling visually. I would love to see a spotlight on the Madden book here!

Love this book. One of the books I bought during the period of time that found me buying anything Jim Lee or Frank Miller recommended. Really anything that helped form the sensibilities of those two is worth the effort. The way my artwork turned out I would have been better off studying Jim Davis... Thanks as always. You guys rock.

I always like to see how the artist goes about making comics. It seems every great artist has their own way that they learned on their own, but was inspired by and respected other artists that preceded them.

As a teenager in the’70s, I became aware of Will Eisner’s Spirit when Warren reprinted the stories in their large b&w format used for Creepy, Eerie, and Vampirella. Then in the early’90s, I had the pleasure of meeting him at Forbidden Planet (think it was on the NW corner of 13th and Bway back then), and nobody else was there. Had no idea what I was walking into meeting him there like that. Just the clerks skulking around on the other side of the store. He was sitting at a small card table with his books on display ready to meet fans, and there I was. He was probably astounded I knew who he was. Of course I knew who he was. He was extremely humble. Lot more laid back then either of my grandfathers had ever been. I wasn’t prepared for this. I was probably there, Marvel zombie that I was, picking up the latest John Byrne, ha. Will’s Comics and Sequential Art was on display of course, and I told him I’d read the book (about a million times, ha). I also told him that I’d always wanted to create a comic, and he totally encouraged me. He had no axe to grind. He just spoke from the heart, and I had been shut down on my dream for so long by my father and a famous comic book guy that I won’t mention by name, who told me I couldn’t draw. In hindsight, it was like meeting God, because when time collides with eternity, time explodes. I wasn’t ready for his words of encouragement back then, but I am now. Thanks for another wonderful episode, guys! I really look forward to hearing from you every week now. Feels like home.

It’s a reference to something Joseph Campbell said, which he actually got from Carl Jung. When time comes into contact with eternity, time explodes. What is temporality compared to the eternal? They cannot share the same space. Eternity always wins. So having the memory of my encounter with Will Eisner cancels out time, because I remember it like it was yesterday even though it was 1992. Hope that makes sense. I probably shouldn’t have shared it. That event in my life was deeply personal, because comics have affected my life in so many ways since I bought my first one as a kid: Fantastic Four #111.

A classic book. Was actually my earliest introduction to Eisner.

To do him justice I don't think a video even 4 hours long would be able to go over the smallest amount of how he transformed comics and the comic book, Graphic Novel industry.

Nice. I was in those classes with Drew, Mark, and others at SVA in the 80's. (Dan Riba who would direct episodes of Batman the animated series was also in the class...) This brings back great memories. Every now & then Will would bring a special guest like Bob Kane to the class... Yea...We had to 'unlearn' a few of the 'Marvel' stuff from that book. But Will would bring in examples of comic art from all over the world that would end up influencing us all. Will was the master! He was heavily influenced by Hitchcock films. I appreciate your channel and this video.

I got my copy as a Christmas gift.

It would be great to see you guys showcase some of the Warren Spirit magazines. I think that they are far and away the best way to enjoy Eisner's work.

I forget how much Theatre is mentioned in this book, but it was really moving for me to see it mentioned in Eisner/Miller.

I see the pages you're looking at after the mention of Theatre and I certainly think of actors on a stage.

That thing with the behind-the-eyes POV could seem like just a silly thing that Eisner tried a few times, but it was probably the basis for what Frank Miller did at the end of "300" with the panels that had the POV from inside Leonidas' helmet. Sometimes the guy who comes up with the thing is not the one who puts it to better use. Also, I wonder who did the first-person POV thing first: Eisner in "The Spirit" or Robert Mongomery in his 1947 film adaptation of Raymond Chandler's "The Lady in the Lake".

Love the sidebars.

Acting is very important in cartooning. Body language or a simple expression will covey more storytelling in a single image than 50 pages of pretentious text 99.9% of current comic artist can not do it

The teachings of Will Eisner are outdate for todays comic books? no wander why mainstream is not doing great, and why DC/Marvel, with some exceptions, comics look so boring.
