I eat meat, not every day, but I eat it. The question is: should I? How much more does it cost to eat meat? When I get a burger I feel more full than if I eat vegetables, and I've been told to finish my meat at the table. Why do we love meat so much? Will we be able to eat #meat the future or will we be eating a plant based diet? Is meat actually more expensive? Is it cheaper to eat healthy?

America’s obsession with meat, explained
www.popsci.com/why-americans-eat-so-much-meat/
Americans celebrate their independence with sizzling sausage and give thanks with turkey. Three decades after Wendy's debuted its signature ad campaign, "Where's the beef?" is still a meme. And we've never elected a vegetarian to the White House. It's no surprise, then, that the average American ate roughly 220 pounds of meat in 2018-a new record.

This is so good and I can't wait to watch the rest of the series! I'm a longtime vegetarian who has lived with omnivores for pretty much my whole life (mostly for economic can't-afford-to-live-alone reasons), which has given me a really interesting outsider perspective on eating meat as an omnivore - long story short the contrast between the amount of "ingredient" meat in the fridge at any given time versus the fast food wrappers in the trash that statistically came from meat products is BONKERS, and it's such a breath of fresh air to hear that dissonance addressed at the starting block and I'm here for it.

Nicely done, but I wish you would have mentioned something about subsidies, and that’s the primary reason that makes meat look cheaper than it really is. My textbooks had pie charts that illustrated what percentage of each type of food gets subsidized. Fun Fact: After meat subsidies, grain is the next highest percentage because a lot of grain is fed to animals.

The calories per dollar V. weight per dollar discussion seems misguided to me. More weight does mean you will be fuller for longer, neither does more calories. What we should really be looking at, if we want to be the fullest for the least amount of money spent, is protein (and fiber) per dollar.

I do like the emphasis here on reducing meat intake. You dont have to give up meat, if everyone just reduced the meat in their diet it would make an enormous difference, and if you are saving money maybe use that on getting better quality meat as well: Low carbon wild game (Which sounds redundant but there is farmed game.) or perhaps very soon we can splash out on the increasingly affordable lab meats that are coming. Very exciting technology. - That said, I do think there are often issues with availability of decent food in general. For many communities they arnt given a particularly great choice in where they can shop or what they can buy; So called food deserts that play a significant role in crippling choice for great chunks of society. (Who just happen to be poor, what a wacky coincidence.) - Assuming you do have the choice though, you might as well consider the alternatives that are there.

As a classically trained chef, I can easily switch to an all veg diet and not get bored of my meal options, although I would prefer to just reduce my meat consumption. Unfortunately, I have one family member who refuses to eat Seitan, Tofu and Beans; another who refuses to eat pork, beef and venison and I am allergic to seafood. So, the only protein source all three people can agree on is poultry. Occasionally I make two different meals at the same time, but that actually ends up being more costly and often takes up too much space in a home kitchen.

I totally get how this is an awfully tricky topic to discuss without alienating the average person. Still I must point out how irritating it is to witness the mind bending cognitive dissonance involved. There are two main messages being crystal clear in this video. 1- Plant based diet advantages are deep and wide in every respects, overwhelming in scope and vital in importance. 2- We absolutely OF COURSE would NOT EVER even DARE suggest to fully ADVOCATE for it.. I absolutely endorse the reducing message being put forward because it is the most sensible first step. But for sheer sake of intellectual integrity and logical consistency it should also be at least stated that we SHOULD strive to completely eliminate animal products. Asked about this topic Richard Dawkins had no qualms admitting that by all account he should go vegan though he wasn't ready for that just yet. That is the simple honest truth that I wish every science educator could provide. Harsh truths are still truths and they unfortunately often are the most important lessons to teach.

@@TraceDominguez This is an age old debate and in our time your stance is the norm. It is indeed a feature of scientific culture itself to resist making recommendations based on their findings. It is the modern standard of journalism to simply state the facts and let the public derive conclusions from what they hear. My perspective is that only throwing facts at people does not educate them. My greatest personal hero is Carl Sagan. Because even to this day he remains unrivaled in his ability to elevate public understanding. And why is that? I would argue that what sets him apart most of all is his chief goal of providing people with perspective. And perspective does not arise from simply listing facts. To pick one among many examples, Sagan was no climate scientist yet his passionate stance on climate change remains among the most influential to this day. In my view science educators are among the most vital members of society. But if them, the most informed of all people, will not present logical conclusions to our current best understanding, who will? I fully subscribe to Sagan's notion of a demon-haunted world, science as a candle in the dark. We see all around us that without clear guidance the public is easily mislead by those who will not shy from making prescriptions based on falsehoods and superstitions. Educators, such as yourself, are the light of this most needed candle in the dark.

The problem now on the economics side, is that meat is becoming more expensive, due to our nation particularly cutting back on meat, so that now it's expensive to eat real lean, red meat. The pandemic hasn't helped either in that respect and higher costs. The main issue with our society as I see it on the daily in my profession, is the consumption of high fat and empty calorie meals. We work more, so we have less time to prepare a meal, hence the consumption and proliferation of cheap fast food. And that ability of cooking a meal has been lost. There is a generation or two of adults who seriously don't know how to use their stove/oven, other than to bake some fries perhaps or the microwave to heat up ready made foods. So, I'm glad you included a shoutout to your cooking partners! And I encourage them and everyone really to come up with a cookbook employing heavily cheap canned, frozen and inclusion of fresh vegetables and everyday cheap herbs/spices that poorer people can begin to collect and make cheap meals. For instance: White chicken chili: can of white (norther nor the like) beans 50 cents 1 small can of chicken chunks or hickory smoked chicken $1.24 1/2 pkt of chicken chili seasoning 50 cents Additions: Recipe helper seasoning blend (onions and peppers) 20 cents per serving 1-2 dollops of sourcream 10-20 cents salsa 10 or less cents side salad with homemade dressing 50 cents This has more than 1 serving, so can be eaten for lunch next day, so $1.50 per serving at most. Remember, people do not know how to cook, and they're receiving canned and sometimes frozen items at the Food Banks. They are not going to know how to fix a can of beans or what to do with dried legumes.

Nice video, however, it is worth noting that meat does not pollute the same way depending on how you graze your livestock. For example, in France, livestock graze mainly from unexploitable soils, take little nutrients from grains that needs to be cultivated and their déjections are used for fertilizer, thus France's meat has one of the lowest carbon footprint at 5kg of CO2 per kg of meat compared to the global average at 50kg of CO2. However, this method isn't optimized for mass production and has a very high production cost. Thus it cannot provide for today's demand in meat. Also the production costs are higher so meat costs would rise. However, even with that meat is still 10 times more polluting than veggies would be. @@TraceDominguez of course, i'm not denying the facts, but i think that if there was less demand on meat, the emphasis would be less on quantity and more on quality, thus reducing further down the costs of eating meat. Also, we can leverage our co2 emissions by being responsible about what we buy so that the meat industry will try to adapt their way of production and reduce their carbon footprint. (Though a carbon tax would be the most effective way)

Having a food marketplace without animal products feel like a sad thing to me. Yes, it may be healthier (for most people, people that had bariatric surgery or other needs might need animal items in their diet) and cheaper and more eco-friendly, but we don't exactly do what we do because it's right, but because it's fun and we extract pleasure from it, even if it's wrong/cruel (like killing animals for our pleasure). I'd rather live a shorter life but enjoy all the foods that aren't that healthy. It's easier with new vegetarian alternatives that are coming with the promise of good texture, taste and nutritional composition, I feel that's the best solution, to be honest, to have a growing number of non-animal based replacements that mimic the original (they will likely be even better, since you can produce the types of texture people enjoy more, no need to have tons of lower quality meat for each piece of filet mignon, for example) and maybe not during our lifetimes, but in the future I strongly believe that killing animals for nutrition and pleasure will become unlawful except on emergencies. We're evolving and it's just awesome! No need to suffer the lack of things, no need for scarcity unless a disaster happens before we get there. Happy holidays! ⛄🎁🎅🏻🎄🎁⛄📆🎆🍾🥂⛄

Out of interest, what is it in animal products that people who had bariatric surgery need? As for your point about ‘we do what we do because it’s fun’, sure that’s what people do, but it doesn’t have to be - anyway, being vegan isn’t exactly ’unfun’. It seems like you agree that eating animal products is wrong, so what is it that prevents you from cutting then out? (assuming you eat animal products)

My relationship with this topic; Vegetarian is easy for me, dairy gets me what I need. Thought I still would only consider myself psuedo-vegetarian. I don't scan food labels for meat, or actively avoid it. If I'm given a (gluten free) turkey sandwich, I'll probably eat it (but not red meat. It's just gross, too high a risk of food poisoning. Speaking from experience). I just coincidentally rarely eat meat. But because I have many health problems and trouble with food, I would die of I tried going vegan. My vegan GP, who usually recommends a vegan diet, has affirmed this. I can't eat wheat, and legumes, nuts, and rice are not fun- I end up losing more nutrition (especially water) trying to digest them than I get back. I have trouble with vegetable fiber in general. So I have to try really hard to pick cheap (I'm well under the poverty line), wheat free, low fiber, high carb, and healthy food. Most people get a large amount of their nutrition from the supplements in wheat, but wheat free flour (that isn't nut based) is devoid of nutrition. I absolutely cannot get my full nutrition without dairy. Supplements are not regulated in the United States, and don't usually agree with my intestines. I take the advice of most doctors and avoid them, unless prescribed. I also have a volatile metabolism with a not happy liver, my ketone levels can spike if I'm not *very* careful- causing my weight to plummet up to 20lbs in just days. It is extremely hard to get my weight back up.

I'm vegetarian, and I care a lot about how horrible and traumatic the meat production industry is, but not everyone wants to hear it. It's a lot better than it was but there are so many issues with the fast food industry to resolve! Dunkin Donuts still wants to charge me $1 extra for my choice of almond milk over dairy. And if I remove the meat from something like the egg and cheese croissant I'm still charged the same for not getting any meat! Sometimes it's less but sometimes there's even an upcharge for that at some places! Problem is is it's more convenient to eat meat. I wish I loved to plan meals and shop for groceries. As far as shopping at the grocery store, unless it's a fancy grocery store then yes it's cheaper than fast food.

The volume per dollar argument doesn't sit right with me, as most of a vegetable's weight comes from water. I could just as easily drink a (free) glass of water with my meat for the same volume benefits. Feeling full comes from how long the food takes to digest, with protein taking the longest to digest, followed by fiber. Great video though!

Someone might ask, "If meat is so expensive to produce, how do you explain the Dollar Menu hamburger?" In fact, McDonald's LOSES money on every burger sold. But if you get fries on the side, they make money. And if you have a soda, they make a lot more money. The soda that you pay 99¢ for costs them a few cents to produce, including the paper cup and the straw. That's why they give you unlimited refills in-store. You could get ten refills and they would still be making money of off it. The burgers at McDonald's (and for that matter, the chicken at KFC) is a classic example of a "loss leader." The company loses money on their core product, but that product brings you to the store where you are almost guaranteed to buy other stuff so they make a profit. Unfortunately for everyone, this has distorted expectations about how much meat should cost. Now people think of it as an everyday food instead of a rare treat.

meat vs. veggies... what i want to know is: does the increase of wheight per dollar make up for the decrease in calorie per dollar when buying veggies? my english is not perfect so let me say it differently. does a person who spends 20$ on vegetables get an equal (or more) amount of energy compared to a person who spends 20$ on meat?

I don't eat a lot of meat, and most of it is white meat, chicken and fish. I'm not going to stop doing that, or reduce that, as I think I am comparatively on the lower side of consumption. However, on the other hand, I also do not eat any vegetables. I hate them, they taste disgusting to me, and I have never eaten them my whole life (except for potatoes, which are arguably not vegetables). And health-wise, I'm perfectly fine. So, no change from me. I think the people who need to make any change are the excess eaters, and really health should be their motivation, more than economics or environmental impact.

I love red meat and dairy. Simple as. I'm not much of a math guy, but wouldn't it be a better alternative from the mass meat production industry (fueled by gluttons) if people bought their meat from a local butcher who sources their meat from local farmers? That would mean people would forcibly have to reduce their meat intake simply because there isn't much supply. Honestly I think if we went back to feudal-like villages, we'd save a lot of money and emisions. I mean, history proves it worked. Can someone help me out with this idea, this has been on my mind for a while.

Actually here in India Veggies are much cheaper than meat 🍖. Yeah, fish is also dead cheap. Most of the Indians have vegetables 3 times a day. A lot of it. And for many of us here in Kerala, fish is a must for lunch. We are at the Southern tail of India. So close to the ocean. Also, there are a lot of backwaters and lakes.

Yes fresh veggies are amazing and should be included in every meal.. tho I want to point out that to feed a family of 6 every night you can pay for a pound of ground meat and hamburger helper for about 6 to 8$. You absolutely could exclude the meat.. i do that att. Just saying that not everyone can afford fast food but can afford store bought options. ✌🏻

Hmm I think your comparison of calories per dollar / edible weight per dollar is confusing. Or maybe I'm misunderstanding? You're just skewing towards water weight. You can eat a ton of veggies and you'll be healthy, but per calorie meat far better. (subsidies and inhumane treatment help..) A $1 cheeseburger is 300kcal, while average $1 of broccoli (1/2lb) is a mere 77kcal. But really it's not one or the other, meat and vegetables are both expensive. No one in the middle ages was living off of broccoli. If you want to save money, eat more grains, beans, potatoes.

Before watching this video, gonna put a comment here first. Huhu. In a way, if you are both meat eater and veggie eater, you are most likely think meat will be expensive, only because you usually bought meat more than vegetables. That kind of lifestyle, that mindset, to just eat meat, but at the same time not forgetting the veggie as well. The proportion of it or the ratio of it is like... 2:1
