Will Culberson World's First 20 MINUTE Foil Pump (Short)

Спорт

On August 23rd, 2022 as the sun was setting on Lake Stevens Washington, Will Culberson set out to set a new pump foil record. This was his last evening on the lake before heading off to college the next morning. His previous record from last summer of 6:25 had been beaten a few times. This time Will pumped for 20 minutes and 2 seconds. As always, thanks to the Devon the Wakethief for the inspiration and for Axis Foils for making such an amazing foil setup!

Will, you're a monster. You and wakethief have inspired me to get into the sport. I'm tempted to just copy your setup, but I bet I weigh a lot less than you (I'm 135 lbs). If you were my weight, would you use this same setup for pumping, or would you downsize anything? What was your approximate weight in this video? Thanks!

Congrats man, awesome record and you could have pumped a few more minutes if the water was really glassy ! Oh my, where is this going to end ? ... Imagine in a few years: "world record 5 hours pumping" on a 2.5 m wide ultra-ultra-high aspect foil ...

It all depends on how your physical fitness is. For me I had to use an accelerated workout regimen because I only had 18 days from getting back from a mission trip to Mexico to when I had to leave for college. My mindset was that I needed to pump every day as much as possible. What that looked like was this. Wake up: Go out early while the lake is smooth and warm up with a few shorter pumps. Then I would do something that looks like this: 10, 2 minute circuit pumps with 1 minute rest in between. (The reason I did this was to simulate either ocean foiling or stealing waves behind boats and the rest riding the wave provides). At the end of this I usually would attempt to pump for a longer period of time. This usually looked like doing a 3 or 4 minute loop from and back to my dock. (This gave me confidence when pumping while tired). Midday: Once the lake got filled with more boats I would start thieving waves. I found that I would work way harder when I was pumping too or from a wave. As my physical fitness increased I would catch and surf boat waves further and further from my house. (3 to 4 minute pumps there and back). My main focus was pumping while out of breath. I wanted to increase my ability to pump while suffering to prepare for the grueling suffering of long distance pumping. Afternoon: In the afternoon my dad would come home from work (my pumping buddy). On the nights that we weren't surfing we would enjoy pumping off the dock together and pushing each other to go further. However, most nights we would go surfing. When I was not surfing on a surfboard or foiling on the slingshot 76 (a smaller foil that is great for airs and sharp carves) I would ride the AXIS 1310 while others surfed behind the boat. This provided an excellent way to work on my endurance. There were times that I would surf for 30 minutes. Surfing up to the boat and pumping in a circle until the surfer who fell got up again. These sessions were a great workout coupled with a fun time with my family. All of this was coupled with a very active lifestyle of surfing, paddling my surfboard, biking, and other activities. Warming up and cooling down was a key part in my pump training which allowed me to pump almost everyday without getting too sore. I would love for you to send me what your training looks like. I would also like to say that I could not have done this without my dad. There were days where motivation was non-existent and it was the accountability he provided that urged me to keep going. Training with a partner no matter their skill level or ability provides an incredible amount of motivation.
