Will Atkinson aged 91 playing in Morpeth Town Hall 1999
Музыка
Will Atkinson was born January 1908 and died July 2003. He is acknowledged to be the prime exponent of the the traditional moothie (tremolo) style of playing the local music of the North East and the Borders. He lived his life in Northumberland and was one of the Three Musical Shepherds along with Joe Hutton and Willie Taylor. In this concert in 1999 he was accompanied on stage by Alistair Anderson. Here are some unaccompanied pieces - march, strathspey and reel. National Harmonica League - www.harmonica.co.uk

I remember going to a Ceilidh at a festival once and the dance band was The Shepherds with Alistair Anderson. After the caller had explained one particular dance all the band members left the stage apart from Will. He played solo harmonica for the whole dance. It was hypnotic. Just supernatural timing and phrasing. It was......emotional. The crowd loved it. God bless him.
I'm sure I met this guy in the late 70s when I was in hospital in Newcastle...he was in the same ward ..I was a young lad recovering from an appendix op, . He told me he was a shepherd in Northumberland , .A lovely old guy who got a lot of visitors as I remember...
Excellent! An inspiring performance. Loved it. Well done that man.
Particularly like the rhythmic delicacy of the strathspey -- and just love the wee puff of breath at the end of the performance!
What fantastic timing Will had! Glad I got to see him live. Thanks for upload.
Wonderful
Truly a wonderful, inspiring musician. Thanks for putting this up.
If I can still play music at 91 (if I get that far) I'd be more than happy to play it as well as Will. Lovely stuff.
I remember meeting Will at the Rothbury music festivals in the 90's...A Shepherd and weel kent face ....

Can anyone identify the configuration of the harmonica that Mr. Atkinson is playing...12 hole soloist in C, maybe?

I think (somebody correct me) he favoured the tremolo harmonica. He frequently played alongside a fiddler (Willy Taylor) and a smallpiper (Joe Hutton). While 'C' smallpipes do exist, they're not very common. 'F' and 'D' pipes are more usual.
