I love Jonathan he's such a great character. His loyalty and love for his family is unsurpassed. He really loves his little brother. He definitely hasn't missed that his brother has romantic feelings for Mike and this is so his way of telling Will he loves him no matter what. Honestly I'm on the last episode now and I genuinely don't understand why people are not liking Jonathan this season. For one... the boy has BARELY HAD ANYTHING TO DO this entire season! And when the moment did come, he stepped up straight away like the protective older brother he is. There has only been one moment of miscommunication between him and Nancy right at the start...she thought he was coming to see her and he thought she was coming to see him. And yet some how he's the one that's the jerk?? Even though they BOTH assumed the exact same thing? Sorry no. I can understand his feeling of relief when she didn't come because he doesn't want to lose Nancy and delaying seeing her means delaying doing what he thinks he's going to have to end up doing if he wants her to be happy which is to break up with her. But he doesn't want to break up with her because he loves her. Also, I don't blame him for taking a year to just do dumb shit like getting high. He's still a teenager and so much responsibility has been put on his shoulders from a young age unlike the rest of the gang. He's still a teenager dealing with normal teenage problems and he's allowed to just take a timeout from everything. He's also a caring person and wants everyone he loves to be happy and he finds himself in a situation where he's going to end up upsetting someone and he's caught in the middle and doesn't know what to do or what the right thing to do is because he loves Nancy and doesn't want to lose her but also doesn't want to abandon his brother (and his mum). He's got a girlfriend he loves and a family he'd do anything for. He feels like he's being pulled in two directions because of his loyalty to his family and also his love for Nancy. He wants Nancy to be happy and for his family to be happy. As much as I love Steve (he's had such great character development the past couple seasons) I don't want him and Nancy together. I love Jonathan and Nancy together so much and i feel like they've both been through so much together that they deserve to be together and be happy. But sadly i feel like the writers are trying to push Nancy back towards Steve.

In a way this was the best way for Jonathan to find out his little brother is gay and to let Will know he knows without fully outing him. It was his way of saying “I know and I understand and it’s ok I love you no matter what” It’s also a really important thing for Will to hear because it’s tough being gay in the 80s. It’s tough, it’s scary, it’s confusing. But really all he needed was for someone to give him a hug and tell him that it’s ok for him to be the way he is. Will Byers deserves the world ❤️

As someone with a gay sibling, I also knew before she told me. I think there is this connection between siblings that parents don’t, where you have a gut feeling that one is having a difficult time with coming out. You notice it with the way they talk, move, function, and basically do anything. My parents actually had no idea about her sexuality and that surprised me a little bit. However, since I spend more time with my little sister than they do, it didn’t come to a surprise.

I'm not sure he is gay. Even Noah Schnapp wasn't sure at first. It is possible but since he was about 15 years old when Stranger Things 1 came out he probably wasn't into girls or any romantic relationships whatsoever. Since his friends were maturing and he was stuck in the Upside Down he wanted to reclaim the life he had lost when he was trapped in the Upside Down. And during the scene where he was asked to dance by a cute girl in the snow ball in season 2 he looked nervous when the girl asked him to dance with her causing Will to look nervous probably due to his past treatment of being an outcast by other bullies and she did call him "zombie boy" so it is understandable why he was hesitant to dance with her since he didn't like that nickname seeing it as insult. And he felt neglected when his friends started to focus on their struggling relationships with their respective girlfriends instead of hanging out like they used to playing Dungeons and Dragons. In season 4 he feels ignored by his friends and especially by Mike when he was more talkative to Eleven. And it is possible that Will might be somewhat jealous of their relationship or just insecure secretly wanting a girlfriend in his life when almost all of his friends has girlfriends (yes even Lucas even though he and Max broke up).

@@Krionos You can't be serious, right? I almost feel sorry that I have to explain this to you. Crying over movies or TV shows is far from childish. We cry for many reasons. Sometimes a scene hits you hard emotionally, or you see yourself in the character or situation. Watching films or series is a common way to process our feelings or to escape from them, especially when you feel like you have no one else to turn to. There are times I get emotional during scenes where it's not even intended. That's just how it is. Scenes where someone is kind and shows they care can really get to me. It's important to me because helping others makes me genuinely happy. Feeling sad or any other emotion because of entertainment is one of the most natural things there is.

I was about 13-14 in 1986 so I am roughly Will's age. Now there is representation and acceptance. Back in the 80's, being openly gay got you shunned, harassed, and a lot worse. I wish someone had told me this when I was 14. I had wonder what "was wrong" with me and then realizing that I could not be open about hurt worse. Being something that you are not is a burden that gave me Depression and Anxiety. Self loathing as well. I tried to get an "adult job" and be the go getter etc. It just tanked my mental health. So, about 20 years ago, I got a job at Tower Records. I finally decided to be myself because I had so many cool friends. I decided to just be myself. No need to come out. If you didn't see it, you were dense. I even got my best friend to give me "talk" like Johnathon gave to Will. And yes, I went home and cried because I had always wanted to hear that. COVID had given my mental health a rough patch. I had always related to Will because I have always been shy and expressing myself is difficult. His arc has been subtle and well done. Realistic for the 80's. Johnathon's speech to Will gave me an ugly cry and helped clear my head. Weird that a TV character helped me like that. My mind hasn't been this clear in years.

I agree with you but there still is acceptance issues today. I kept my bisexuality a secret from 2015 to 2020 when I finally came out to my mom first. She was accepting. The hardest part was the rest of my family being Christian Right wing conservatives. When I publicly came out because I couldn’t keep it in no more, my uncle straight up told me he will never support me on that part of my life and my dad just said “I know your just confused” which that…. That honestly hurt worse then my uncle saying he will never support me on that front…. And the rest of my family was silent about it. Likely still not wanting to make things awkward even worse. It’s a struggle still. And I still think about my uncles saying and especially my dads saying everyday….

As soon as Jonathan says..."and there is nothing in this world..." (re: loving his brother unconditionally)...Will's chest rises and falls much faster in realization that Jonathan is likely aware that he is gay. In that moment it's a staggering physical response of likely some blend of anxiety at finally being seen but also the confirmation that his brother will love him too and I can only imagine the emotions coursing through him. He obviously shies away from talking or addressing it directly with anyone and a good chunk of his fear probably stems from his father's emotional abuse and also the bullying he experienced. I like that Jonathan essentially gave him an out to not have to discuss it knowing how overwhelmed Will likely has been for awhile, he didn't mention relationships, or Mike...but the confirmation of total acceptance with no request for information is just a wonderful way of going about trying to console anyone who seems to be dealing with internalized homophobia. He didn't make the comments specific to any one aspect of Will's life...it's more than just touching upon one issue. But any issue that could be causing Will anxiety...currently or in the future. For a teen who has felt sort of left behind or almost forgotten in the last few seasons particularly, that must be such a relief to felt truly loved. Jonathan and Will are such awesome brothers.

It makes me lose the slightest faith I had in writers. It shows they are either incapable of writing or favor comedy and over-the-top drama rather than subtle dramatic scenes. The first two seasons leaned more towards serious drama with a good amount of sophisticated humor. However, after season 2, their approach shifted to almost pure comedy with only a little bit of drama here and there, which was sometimes over the top. That's why characters like Jonathan and Will were sidelined; they can't provide much comedic relief. This made me lose the remaining faith I had that the show would return to a serious track in season 5.

This is why I love Jonathan. Hes gotten a lot of flack for how his character has been portrayed, but i think its a great progression for him. The issue i feel with him is too many comparisons to Steves character, but Steve went through a transformation not an evolution. Jonathan has always been family first, hes reseverved and quiet, and clearly suffers from trust issues due to the conflict of his parents relationship. Him gravitating towards a friend whos also reserved and a stoner makes sense, Argyl expressed how jonathan is his only friend. Him having the decision to stay in California at a community college to me, is an early indication that he knew something was up with Will. But also barring the responsibility of El and his mom, he did what was in the best interest of his family. Plus it goes back to the fear of Trust with Nancy. He wants nancy to live her dreams, he doesnt want to hold her back. Now for those who ship steve and nancy...i disagree on that as well. The little family harrington idea is something steve wants, not nancy. It sounds cute and romantic, but it goes back to the very thing nancy disliked about her own family, former jock in sales marries the pretty girl to start the subburban life. Jonathan wants Nancy to chase her dreams, Steve wants Nancy to be apart of his. In my honest opinion, steve needs someone better suited for his future. Not the girl who got away. Nancy is independent. And jonathan has to confront his own issues. But he always puts everyone else first. His character/morals has always remained there.

Can’t wait to see them both grow and find peace in season 5❤ but at the same time, we can’t have it all… if Mike and will end up together, then El will be heartbroken. But if Mike and El stay together, Will will be heartbroken. We can’t get a happy ending where everyone is happy. Unfortunately as a writer myself, I can tell the obvious solution to this love triangle that I’m almost positive the Duffer brothers will go with… they’re likely going to kill off either El or Will to solve the love triangle and make it so Mike doesn’t have to choose. And I’m SURE if they do kill off one of them, it’ll be Will. Which will make me have to go to therapy to recover from.

I think this is what’s been missing from the series for a long time and why it seems like Will and Jonathan are seemingly irrelevant to a lot of people now. They (and even Joyce) seem to have been distant the last few seasons, off on their own adventures, without that family dynamic which was the most important thing in season 1 and arguably why Will was able to be saved in the first place. Jonathan and Will are at their best when they have scenes like this, both as characters and actors. I’m probably one of the few that enjoyed the California group (admittedly mainly cause of Argyle) but I think if they had established how these two have grown apart and how Jonathan feels guilty about it (and his other issues) in the beginning of the season, it could’ve been better. It seems hopeful they’ll be back to this tho in season 5

When they reunite in the finale of season 4, Joyce has an scene hugging Eleven, but not even her own children? The California storyline could've been incredibly good if they had focused on the Byers dynamic as a family with a new member in episodes 1-2-3, but it was all just so faded and sidelined

Funny people always say he gets so much hate, yet I usually only see nothing but love for him

@@gerdtt79he’s not hated as much as ignored by everyone. I I haven’t seen Jonathan being hated by the fandom like I’ve seen Jason, Mike, Nancy or Billy. They just ignore him

This is what makes stranger things such a good show. The characters and their relationships are what make me come back. And I for one can’t wait to see where everyone lands in S5.

When I watched this scene with my family, I won’t lie when I say I cried so hard. I feel like this scene represents my brother and I sometimes. I normally never open up to him about a lot, but he always tells me that I can and in the moments of watching this, it brought me to tears. I gave him a hug afterwards
