Or, weld angle iron reinforcing ribs to the internal surfaces of the sheet steel, in a grid pattern, before welding it together. Coat the outside with 1/8" or thicker coating of truck bedliner, and coat the inside with 1/2" to 1" of clear silicone sealer. Retest it and see how it works.

Case stiffness is one of the most important factor in a speaker, some filler material to eliminate internal reflections wouldn't hurt either. Upgrade to 1/4" plate to mostly eliminate flex, glue shaggy carpet or something similar to internal walls and it should sound much better, though probably still crappy compared to a properly engineered speaker.

Steel works for subs if it is thicker. I made 8” subs out of 10 gauge plate and they had no flex or rattle at all. Because i used steel, they had the interior volume required and took up a very small space. All you need is enough material to keep it rigid.

One note, (bass reflex) ports on a speaker enclosure aren't there to "provide air" for the driver to create pressure; they're there to amplify a very narrow band (few Hz) of low frequencies. It's basically a Helmholtz resonator tuned to one specific frequency (this is done by varying the port cross-section and length with respect to the internal volume of the box), at which the changes of pressure inside the enclosure cause resonance of the air in the port in such a way that the resulting soundwave coming from the port is in phase with the soundwave coming from the driver, so when the tuning frequency of the port is played, at the rising of the sine wave impulse, when the speaker cone is pushed out, the port ISN'T sucking air into the box to level the pressure difference inside - It's actually pushing air OUT, making the pressure difference inside the box even greater. It may sound counter-intuitive but that's actually how it works. Because the soundwaves from the port and the driver are in phase, they create a constructive interference, amplifying the sound. The phase response of the port shifts gradually with frequency above and below the tuning frequency, so a ported enclosure has a steeper frequency response rolloff below the port tuning frequency than a closed enclosure has, but it has higher sound pressure level at the port tuning frequency and for a small part of band above it. And that's the whole reason why it's the most common type of subwoofer or woofer enclosure - there's extra bass to be gained, at the cost of a slight loss of sound neutrality (which can be reasonably mitigated) and extra R&D for the enclosure and driver (which has to have suitable Thielle/Small parameters for ported enclosure).

hmm back in high school i build a speaker box out of aluminum for an 8 inch sub woofer. I was only pushing 100W to it and it actually sounded good. It only rattled when it got close to the side of the truck. It was a 69 GMC pickup so metal on metal rattles. Other than that it sounded good. You could hear a difference towards the high end. To me it sounded better. The highs were more pronounced, not hurting your ears but just more evened out. In the wooden box it sounded more muffled. Like the wood was absorbing more frequencies whereas in the metal box they rang out instead. Just sounded a bit cleaner to me. Mine wasn't a pro setup by any means. Just 2 outputs from the radio ran into a cheap amp and 2 outputs from the amp fed into the one sub haha. It did rattle the windows really nicely in that old truck though lol

For the speaker to make sound, the driver needs to BOTH move in AND out by changing directions of the current flow. It is this movement of the speaker driver moving in AND out that is vibrating the air to make sound. So, sound is made by AC, because music is made up of variations of many different frequencies and loudness, with low frequency as the bass, high frequency as treble, and the amplitude of the current expressed as the loudness variation.

A belt-fed machinegun that fires 5.56mm is not even remotely a Heavy. It's not even a Medium. You need something closer to .50 BMG. The Browning M2 "Ma Deuce" the US Military still employs, for instance.

yes if box is built to spec for speaker and tuned properly, in the states we have guys with massive builds and all steel boxes, that steel was too thin and had not enough internal bracing, box flex = sound distortion, and unwanted noise, please do this again and add strength to the box

You can use metal if you meet 2 requirements. 1- the metal you use is thick enough to stop box flexing and 2- you use internal bracing every 1-1½ linear feet. This also helps to stop box flex. Aside from build defects in your main design, use the manufacturers specifications for box size, port diameter, and port length. If you do this I can guarantee that single 15" sub would almost rattle that car to pieces and sound good while doing it.

  • @JerryF417

You should have used 1 inch square tubing welded together instead of a sheet of metal. I bet you could put a bunch of braces in it & make it sound better

based on the music in these videos and the style of the cars in the background- it will sound great with the trashy 1990s bass car kind of music that will be played through it. honestly a heavy metal box would be fine- anything heavy and rigid will make a great subwoofer box, but that's obviously not what theyre going for here.

I bet it would get a bit louder if the box was actually tuned to anything useful by calculating the length of the port, around 30 to 45 hz is what you should tune the box to. There are calculators online that can calculate port length based on box size and port diameter.

No internal bracing, no internal dampening so of course it's not going to sound good. If it was well braced, and then add some sound dampening to the metal box and I bet it would sound so much better. It can work but was executed wrong.

  • @exoida

needs a frame so to not flex in hopes at making some pressure , then you could go as far and adding in some planters foam to make a sound form tunnel (once formed melt said foam into place or even use auto filler to make it less trash . now this could work but it would be cheaper to buy premade / make from wood / lexan /. still pretty cool attempt
