Terrible fight. Ugly as hell. Benitez was finished by this point. Slow, disoriented, not moving around, no snap to his punches, etc. And Hamsho just a brawler with zero boxing ability, pushing Benitez against the ropes the entire fight. So sad to see Benitez this way. His brain damage was already becoming apparent.

Yeah this was the first inkling that there was something very wrong with Benitez.....not because he lost, but that his reflexes looked completely shot, & he was barely 25...looking back, they should have retired him after this, because he simply wasn't the same guy. If Benitez didn't have 13 those fights after Hamsho, I can't help thinking he would have been healthy, happy, & alright today..

I watched this fight live on TV back in the day -- I was stuck at the car dealership lobby waiting for my car to be repaired. It was sad to see how badly Benitez had faded. He looked old, sluggish and poorly conditioned -- no sign of the El Radar who had outslicked Duran a year earlier. Bad day for Benitez, but a good day for Hamsho. Even in top shape Benitez would have struggled against Hamsho, a mauling, brawling old school fighter in every way (including his multiple aliases). Hamsho was the closest thing I've seen to a Gene Fullmer in my lifetime, a brawler, pressure fighting spoiler who could make anyone look bad. Decent body puncher, never hesitated to use head butts, shoulder butts, low blows, shoves, whatever he could get away with. He gave Hagler one of his toughest defenses, and even did pretty well in the rematch with unexpected changes in head movement and bobbing and weaving -- until Hagler caught him clean early on. Fans talk a lot about Hagler vs Antuofermo, Minter, Duran, Hearns and Leonard, but they should watch Hamsho's beatdowns over several name opponents to understand how tough he was even for Hagler.

Mustapha Hamsho was too strong for the great Wilfred Benitez. Benitez could not cope with Hamsho's strength. It was evident that Benitez could not compete with the middleweights. This was also a combination of poor training habits, women, drugs and alcohol. Something was not right with one of the all time great pound per pound boxers in Wilfred Benitez.

I think the mauling, brawling style of the much stronger and natural middleweight Hamsho ( plus he is a southpaw) would give even a prime Benitez a lot of proplems. Hamsho left no room for effective counter punching. In this stage of Benitez career not the health is the problem - this comes later. He was still a good boxer who can beat journymens and untested young prospects, but not world class any more.

@@Robert-qm5soDuran was not only a brawler like Hamsho . Duran was a brawler with highly boxing skills. The Benitez fighting Duran would beat Hamsho, but I don't think it wuolld be a easy fight for Benitez. Styles makes fight. Problem is this wasn't the Benitez fighting Duran and Hearns anymore. Not ill but a little shot. A good experienced Veteran Boxer, but not Woldclass anymore. Here in Germany we have Graciano Rocchigiani. He koed Hamsho (in his last fight) in the first round.

Hamsho's last 3 fights before his rematch with Hagler were pretty much the same, including Benitez. Ugly street fights with multiple trips to the canvass without an official knockdown. Give Hamsho credit for imposing this grappling style against the tops - except Hagler. Hagler maintain the class of expert boxing vs poorly officiated head butting wrestling matches. Screw the WBA always - Hagler gave Hamsho and all like him a knockout from the sweet science.

There was no El Radar from Benitez in this Mauling he got. Hamsho was having his lunch 🥗 in this fight. Benitez clearly not a middleweight. No wonder he went back down to Junior Middleweight after this ! Infact he was finished after the Hearns fight. That was the last good Benitez we would ever see.was the Hearns fight in 1982. He became a stepping stone threw out his career from the Hearns fight on.🥊
