Wilford the bear wandering through the creek in the Angeles National Forest. He passes by four of my cameras, over the span of two days.
On March 18, 2024, the beloved behemoth walked over a familiar log crossing the water. Then a couple of hours after that, he heads to my camera out on “the green.” This spot has an old oak tree that he visits a few times a year. Sometimes he rubs his back on it, leaving his scent for the other bears to notice.
Then Wilford disappears for two days, before returning on March 20, 2024. He crosses the rocks and water, then rubs on another familiar tree. Scent marking on trees is just one form of communication between these black bears.
