Wild Owl Photography with the Canon R6 & Canon RF 100-500mm Lens. I'm testing out this Mirrorless Camera and Zoom Lens photographing the roosting Long eared Owls in Serbia. With the release of the Canon R6 Mark ii, this might be a good time to grab a bargain of the original. I'm reviewing this combo in the field, including hand-holding at slower shutter speeds - and pushing the camera's ISO limits.
Images were taken in various towns and villages in Vojvodina, Serbia. 2022. Thank you to everyone in Serbia who helped me.

I've really enjoyed using the Canon R6 & RF 100-500mm Lens here in Serbia. The IBIS was particularly useful, allowing me to capture a range of images hand-held, at relatively slow shutter speeds. From my small amount of time with this camera I'm really impressed with the Eye Tracking Autofocus, although I can see some limitations. Do let me know your thoughts on this combo if you use it already. I hope this video has been helpful to anyone considering changing to this system.

I've been shooting Canon as a pro for 18 years. Got my R6 II this week and wow. The IQ is waaaay better than any camera I've ever used. I can shoot ISO12800 at F1.4 in nearly pitch black and it will look like daylight, with almost no noise. I shoot in low light mostly so I know what noise should look like and this camera is about 1 stop better than my 5D IV which was the best I'd ever seen before. If you shoot with Electronic shutter, noise and dynamic range will degrade by about 1 stop vs using the default elec/mechanical shutter. As for the EVF, you should set it to "performance" to get the highest framerate for shooting fast moving objects. By default it's set to a slower FPS to save battery.

Hi Paul. I know you’re not a fan of bbf but , as others have commented, it really comes into its own with these cameras. I use the 100-500 on an R5 and have triple back button focus options. AF-ON for single point, the second for animal eye tracking and the third for zone. That way you have all the bases covered at the touch of a button and it’s amazing how quickly it becomes second nature to switch from one to another as needed - even if it can feel a bit like playing an accordion!

@@PaulMiguelPhotography You can also combine shutter AF with BB AF, it works really well with single point af on the shutter and eye-tracking (2 different kinds) on the AF and * buttons. the AF & * override the shutter so its really cool way to prefocus and then eye-track this way. Specially if u set up the camera to start tracking from where the single AF point was.

I've had the R6 for a while now and since buying the RF100-500 it has been almost permanently attached. Like others have said, I do use dual bbf, so it's easy to swap between spot and eye focus. I've never owned a big fixed focal L lens, so can't compare the image quality, but it has amazed me how sharp the images are, moving from the Sigma 150-600C ( as long as I don't make an error), I shoot in Raw and often I don't even feel the need to sharpen in post processing.

Hello Paul just watched and enjoyed this video checking out the R6. Having had this camera for a little over a year now I would thoroughly recommend it. I use it mainly for wildlife, predominately birds. I sold a canon 5D mk4 and 90D. The reason I bought the R6 was the auto focus, as I was more than happy with everything else on my DLSR cameras. Since then I have never had so many pictures in focus, especially birds in flight or just moving quickly! Almost felt like I was cheating! Saying that you still have to work the camera which is good, so very happy. No camera is perfect. Thankfully. Its a joy to use, EF lenses work very well, in fact I think better, there is more clarity in the image whether because the focus is spot on or the sensor, I think a combination. Incidentally the lens I like using is the RF 800 F11 which gives that extra reach. It has short comings ie the large aperture, but I like to think of this as a positive, extra depth of field on the bird and 800mm can give very good blurred backgrounds so no problem there. Incidentally I still like using DSLRs for wildlife or anything else. Because of dropping prices I bought a 7d mk2 and 1DX 2 and now have the best of both worlds. Watch all your videos, even made a Fry Pod. Told everyone I invented it and came up with the name, sorry mate. Keep the good work up.

I love the RF 100-500mm lens. I pair it with my R7. I haven't bothered to remove the tripod collar either. While I don't use a tripod very often I have a tripod and ground pod in the car just in case. I also use it as a handle. I remember that you aren't a fan of Back Button Focus but on my R7 I have one button set for eye tracking and another set for spot or zone focus depending on another button I press. I know that sounds confusing but without moving my eye off the viewfinder I can change my focus mode with just a quick tap with my thumb. I find that combination works well when you have birds in trees when their eyes are obscured. "Looking okay" is a bit of an understatement. Wow, that owl picture with the slow shutter speed was nice. You caught on quick to the "half press the shutter while raising the camera" trick. When I do that with my R7 the display is on by the time I have it at my eye.

The only issue is the smaller MP but you can output from Raw to 30 MP and usually the R6 II images are sharper because it has a weaker AA filter and the AF is just so much more accurate.

Hi Paul, I am glad you are testing this combo. I would recommend the R5 for a better EVF experience. Also 45mb allows you to crop a lot. The more you will gt use with this combo you would see how muchhe eye tracking is so good wayyyy better than my 5D IV. I use ISO 32000 with dxo PureRaw2 and get good results. I know that the R5 is more expensive but you get way more. You can ask your followers that tried/used both R5/R6. R5 is more robust, better EVF experience, 45mbs, better video options etc.. have a great day!

Having R6 with dilema to maybe switch to R5 at some point (and coming from 5D IV), I decided to stick with the R6 for a bit more and wait for R5 II. R5 Mark I has too many drawbacks to justify the price difference. Yes, 45MP is nice to have, especially form cropping, but it also comes with EVF lag, only 12bit for 1st curtain and electronic shutter and heating up even when not recording anything. Not to mention only one CF Express card (second is SD). Using both for redudancy, the SD puts a big hit on buffer size. There are some other minor-ish drawbacks I found out when reading the manual and analysing technical specification a bit more. I'm not saying R5 is a bag camera, but it has its drawback so might not be that good for everyone. YMMV.

Sorry mate but you're not using the eye AF correctly. Leave the camera in spot AF (the smallest focussing point possible) and set the rear AF-ON button to activate the Eye AF. This way you pre select the subject with the single point then once subject is locked, press the AF on button and it should (most probably will) pick up the head and eye.. There's a big learning curve when coming from a DSLR.. but once you know what you're doing there's no turning back. Also there are loads of ways to customize buttons and dials. Mirrorless systems work best as a system, not as a kluged setup. You'll never get all the benefits of a mirrorless camera while tied to lenses that were not designed for it. The R6 mk II is going to give much better performance than the original - there is no reason to get the old one.

Really funny to see a pro photograph use the R/5/6 for a first time. You really need to set it up properly otherwise its hell. Viewfinder refresh rate find the setting to set it to 120Hz and that takes care of the lag. Eye-detect AF is a whole different story. Too many settings to play with and explain here. Find a video of a wild life photographer setting it up to get a clue whats going on and start experimenting which setup works best for u. Look at 'Michael the Maven' short videos for quick tips how to set it up. Definately won't work the way u were trying it :) And last, ISO, feel free to safely use ISO as high as 12800. May as well set up Auto ISO to that limit. Adope products do not handle the raw files of R3/5/6 well, but once u pass them thru DXO Pureraw or Canon's DPP if u more patient, high ISO is the last thing to worry about on mirrorless. Oh battery... pain in the butt, specially when fps drops to 8-9 when battery life goes under 1/2. Need a battery grip for sure. Thankfully third party grips are out already and you can get one even under 100 bucks today! But 4 batteries for a day out are a must.
