This time last year I decided to upgrade from my Nikon D7500 that I had outgrown to a mirorless system. I looked at the big 3 Nikon, Sony and Canon and chose the R6MK2. For me the biggest selling point was fps. next was the autofocus system and every review said it was outstanding. Made the purchase in March and have not regretted the change. I added the RF24-105f4, RF100 Macro, RF70-200RF, and the Sigma EF150-600. Dynamic range is awesome, autofocus is great, and the video capability is a nice bonus. I shoot about 50/50 wildlife and landscapes so for me this is the perfect "hybrid" camera.

If I had a lot of money, I’d buy an r7 with the 800mm f11 to back up my Sony a7rv. That 800 f11 is something I have been wanting for the Sony system ever since it came out.

Thanks for your review of current Canon bodies. I think you did a good job being fair and unbiased. Every model has its good and not so good attributes so it comes down to each individuals wants and needs and budget. We really don't do much video. That could change. My wife and I both have an R6 II so of course it's nice to hear that you think so highly of it. We are very fortunate to have them. We came from an R and a 90D and could not be happier with the R6 II. I think that even if the current R5 was within our budget that we'd opt for it. The 24 MP has not been an issue for us either and I doubt whether it ever will be but understand how it might be an issue for some photographers. It will be interesting to see what the new R5 II and R1 will have to offer but again, we are more than satisfied with the R6 II for our needs and budget.

Now that I have the 200-800 I've switched back to the R5 as my main camera instead of the R7. I've recommended the R7 to friends that are looking for something lightweight to pair with the 100-400 and not be too expensive, and they love it. But, once you're used to the performance of the R5 it's hard to stay with the R7 long term. The only reason I got the R7 was the reach, but the 200-800 elevates that with the R5, and it even works well with the 1.4 TC. Hopefully the R5 MK2 will solve my only real issues with the original: the slow startup/wake from sleep and the overheating. I am tempted by a used R3 or R6 MK2 in the meantime but I think the low MP count will bother me, at least for warbler photography. Was that a Townsend's warbler in this video? One showed up in southern Maine, and i made the 1.5 hour trip there. Took quite a while but I finally got a useable picture, though it's mostly the rear end. With a lower MP body I probably wouldn't have been able to crop in enough. In southern New England, the birds just don't like to come too close unless they are mallards and domestic escapees for the most part. The low MP bodies would be beneficial for low-light owl photography. Have you done any of that with the R5? Hopefully a 45+MP BSI stacked sensor will have good low-light performance. I've had decent results with the R5 and EF 600 f/4 MKII for owls as they wake up right at sunset, but I've seen better results with the R3.

Oh nice! I'm looking forward to hopefully renting the 200-800 at some point. And yes, that was definitely a Townsend's! They're one of my favorite warblers, but man they're hard to catch. I had 3 of them show up in my juniper tree in my front yard and hang out for like 2-3 days. It was amazing. They are also common in my area, especially above 7000 ft, which is about 10 mins from me, but they just don't ever come out of the canopy or stay still long enough, lol. So I'm stoked to have finally gotten some good images of them. I haven't done much owl photography. Only when I randomly find a Great Horned while out hiking and such.

I've been shooting 20 mp for years professionally. I can easily print 30 x 40" and have heard zero complaints from anyone. Sure, for wildlife a little more cropping capability would be great, but it's not a deal breaker. Eventually, I'll get a 45mp camera and that will provide a little more flexibility.

Brilliant and superbly delivered video. It would have helped me to choose my camera more easily if I’d seen it last month . But I’m pleased to hear your opinions because the R6II is the camera I bought! with the RF100-500mm lens. I am still only experimenting and about to change the configuration to back-button focus. Just waiting for some dry weather in wet and flooded south east England! Best wishes to fellow bird photographers around the world and thanks Brent

When I started shooting professionally, I was given some good advice from experienced pros and that was to have a backup camera body that was the same as your main body. Reason being, you could seamlessly and quickly switch to the backup without having to master another system. Can everyone afford to do that? Of course not. But if you’re currently getting paid to get “the shot” or you want to sell your art eventually, consider the value that your backup camera really has as opposed to how much the camera costs when purchased.

For me, video is not an issue, I dont shot video. Period. I have a 6D mark 2, Eos R and R6. R6 mark 2 is interesting due to the AF, but Im thinking of trying to get me a used R5 due to the pixel size. Taking birds photos, sometimes havely cropping are necessery, so 45MP would be a help. R6 with its 20MP are sometimes to light when it comes to cropping.

I agree R5 and R6 II are both great .. I lean more towards the 5 just because I can switch between stills video with 120 frames per second and or video. or 60 frames per second without taking my eye out of the viewfinder and with warblers the extra pixels come in handy.. but wish my R5 would acquire and hang on to birds as well as the R6 ii does it's by no means bad but after you experience the six it feels that way😅

I'm late to the party, but you really did a great job going over the lineup. I started with an R10 (poor man's R7) and loved it, but wanted to see what full frame was about, so I picked up an RP to play with. Immediately fell in love with full frame, so I sold both the RP and R10 to get an R8. I lost the crop factor, but gained better AF and rolling shutter than the R10/R7 and that full frame goodness.

I have R3 and R 5. I use the R 5 in daylight and the R3 in low light. I am not in to it, but it seems to me that the R 3 has more/gives more colour. Almoust as good as Hasselblads many colours. It's what I see at my big 5k screen at least. and now with the boost in piksels in lightroom, it dosen matter that its only 24 mp. However the thing that matters for me is the fact that my 500 f4 is sharper than my 600 f4. so the go to lens is the 500 with the tc 1,4. LIKE YOUR VIDEOS!👌👌😊😊👍👍❤❤

I am an amateur wildlife photographer from the UK, and use a Fuji X-T5, but I have been thinking a lot about changing to Canon - either the R7 or the R6 mk2. I watched your video just now and was so pleased to listen to your positive remarks about the R6 mk2 and you mentioned all the pros and cons that I had considered between the two, before deciding that the R6mk2 will be my choice. Am I correct in thinking that the pre-capture shots are stored in one large file, though, so you have to extract the images one by one from the camera, rather than each shot being a separate file, as in the X-T5, which I can download straight to my computer and sort them out from there. Have I understood correctly about this? It would be annoying to have to go through them on the camera screen as I wouldn't be able to see clearly enough on there. Sorry if this is a daft question but hope you may be able to clarify for me!

nice video I would say the R8 has no mechanical shutter. Just first curtain which is a bit useless at 6fps. As for rolling shutter yes it sucks. Thats why I think the R3 trumps the R6II or R6. Same is true of the R5. I am thinking about getting a R5 when the prices drop. A r5 is like a 2x extender just think about it if you crop 100% your at what a R6 is. AS for the noise on the R7 I think if you compare it to a 1dx its not that bad. But I do agree it is a bit noisy. Lets see what a r5 mk2 brings it probably will blow the r5 out of the water . Any thoughts on a R1? On another topic and no not the one you eat. I noticed you have many guitars its some thing I have wanted to learn for years any advice ? Is it hard to learn? How long would it take a beginner to learn ? many thanks for the video take care.

Thank you for the video. Yes, you’re right. Everybody is different. It will always be like that. I have decided to stick to DSLRs. No offence to mirrorless users however; I’m convinced DSLRs are best suited for wildlife photography due to its OVF strength. I see action at the speed of light which is never possible on EVF. Any moment captured by a mirrorless camera is never exactly the same as what was seen on EVF at that very moment. That has made all the difference and kept me glued to DSLRs. Again, no offence to mirrorless users. I use Canon 1D Mark IV paired with EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II augmented by EF 2x III extender. For BIF, it’s 7D + EF 400mm f/5.6L. Sometimes I use 5DIII for both the purposes as well. Also own 5D Classic, 5DII and 40D. Happily exploiting the new gear craze and find great cameras in the used market in excellent condition. I’m purely a hobbyist photographer. Resolution has never been issue to me. Rather scared of high-rez bodies. The slight crops I do on my images are allowed by all of my cameras. My mirrorless user friends tell me that Canon isn’t going to produce any DSLRs in future. That’s fine with me. All my pro-grade Canon bodies have tons of shutter life remaining - good enough for at least ten years from now on for me. Rather, I use my money on overseas wildlife safaris. Completed one in Nepal recently. Planning a bigger one sometime this year. I own very capable real cameras. So, my indifference about new releases frees up my mind to concentrate on composition and new ideas. I do lot of landscape and street photography as well. Video recording is not my cup of tea. When I feel like doing a few casual clips; use my smartphone. Thanks again.

The 30 minute limit is a taxation thing iirc. Some countries have different rules for photo vs video cameras. That’d also explain why the limit isn’t removed via firmware as it would open up Canon or the camera users to tax evasion troubles. As far as I know there hasn’t been a camera manufacturer that removed the recording limit via firmware, but I could very well be wrong. About the R7 vs the R8 you mention the battery life and IBIS, another important difference (in my opinion) is that the R8 has a single card slot, which isn’t ideal for professional use.

cheers mister combat roller 😋 brent your channel was one of the reasons i got the R7 just last week. from what i saw so far: its a fantastic camera and there are no real "good or bad" ones. at the end it comes down to more life decision reasons why and which cam people buy. there is no perfect camera to rule them all. for ME personally the R7 is perfect and couldnt be any more perfect. i dont want the R5 if somebody would give it to me for free due to different size, weight and other factors. i loved my old 7D 10 years ago and R7 just feels right in my hands. i wouldn't change it for anything else in the world. as hobbyist it would of course be nice to spend 10k $$$$$ on a fancy lens but lets be honest its just a toy to make us feel better when you are not a professional photographer to earn money with this. if its professional the whole story get very different of course. i see photography as therapy. spending 3000$ on everything i got right now is still cheaper than a couple of sessions with a therapist for mental health. 🤪 talking about cons: auto-focus is worse than other cams? maybe but i didnt notice because i dont have access to other cams. it works fantastic for me. picture quality and high ISO is a problem? again i see amazing performance for what the cam cost and i never see anything like it before. (had a 7D many years ago and a crappy nikon P950 recently to see if birding is something for me) form factor is strange? yes but i 3D printed a bottom cover which makes it fit in my big hand like a glove. absolute perfect now. RF100-400 is a cheap lens and not good? for pros who are used to L lenses for years yes. but for me its pure heaven. reach is not enough and i wish to have 800mm. still not a deal breaker because now it forces me to think out of the box. got a full camo set. clothes, camo cover for my big umbrella so i can make my own hide wherever i am and i learned so much watching your videos. cant reach the bird? then make the bird come closer and not notice me! let finish it here: dont take all this too serious (your channel, the worries, the struggles, not enough viewer, not enough clicks on each video). does it make us feel good to go out and get nice pictures in nature? yes, so its all worth it. sitting in the studio and make a 20 min video talking about cameras is fine but you could also use the time to go out and do that in the field with some tips how to overcome each cameras disadvantage / use its advantage to the max would be much cooler. now get up and go out. take your favorite soul liberator (my new word for "camera")🤣 and just enjoy. if people see that your channel will explode. keep it positive. but leave the funny mishaps and clumsy ninja rolls in! i was in stitches here because thats exactly how i roll in the field. mind of a 19 year old. but my body say i am a liar. haha! cheers mate Panda

I hear you on the R7, had it for a year, tried to love it, but just could not. That mechanical shutter sound, ugh, atrocious. It actually scared off a fox I was shooting once and the rolling shutter was a no go for prop aircraft or panning. I was able to trust my R6 and the overall experience with it had me keep that over the R7, and have no regrets. This comes close to home, Brent. I have the R5 and an R7. I'm awaiting the Canon 200-800 so won't need the reach of the R7 crop factor for sensible use. Plus, like you, I have never liked the R7's form factor. I'm thinking it might be smart to cash in the R7 and buy an R6 MKII. Best of two worlds? The R5's megapixels and the R6 MKII's fewer megapixels, better for storage when it makes sense, in trade for it's superiority in low light and autofocusing ability, along with the same form factor of the R5. What do you think? Makes sense to me, especially with my hate for the R7's form factor.

Frankly, the r6m2 or the r3, both with better AF system than the r5m1, are not good enough for me. I demand, and will wait for, the r5m2, with the 45+ MP, I need. I dealt with 24 MP sensors with the 80D, and 30 MP with the 5DM4, and those are not enough for the detail i want in my work. i get lots of requests for imagery for posters and billboards, and print publications, and they all ask for high resolution files. They don’t want to hear about upscaling software (even though I honestly don’t think they could tell the difference) so more and more with the r5 (and my previous 5DSR) I could respond with a crisp file for them. There are so many times when those larger files help me. None of this is to say that resolution is the only thing that matters. It’s just that the r5’s AF system is more than good enough to get the job done. Combine that with a 500 mm f4 mk2+1.4x Tc or the new 200-800, and it becomes easier than ever to get a high resolution sampling on even the smallest creatures. Maybe for the work you do resolution doesn’t matter, but for mine it does. I welcome more resolution in my camera as long as the AF system is good enough to get me the shots I want. I have the r7, i rented the r3 for an eagle trip, so I know what the best AF system Canon makes does, but it isn’t so much better that it wins out on the MP front, else I would own either a r6m2 or a r3 already. I am waiting on the r5m2. I do want to see what the r1 offers, but I expect it to have features I can live without, like maybe two CF-e card slots, which would be nice, but now that I have built up a collection of UHS-2 cards, isn’t really a big need for me. But the extra AF system i do want, but with more than 24 MP! Best to you and camera lady in 2024!!!!

  • @BrentHall

    @BrentHall

    5 ай бұрын

I don't think I'd personally call myself a Canon loyalist, but I'm definitely happy with my current gear. I also stated in the title of the video that it was all about Canon, as that's what I have and use. It's not meant to be a comprehensive, objective analysis of every camera from every brand. It's just my thoughts on what I have and use. My thoughts and statements in this video were also quite honest, though certainly not objective, but that should have been obvious as no tests were given nor data shown. I also don't recall saying that your 100mp camera is worthless. I'm sure it's a very capable and lovely camera. I think by misunderstanding and being angered by my statements in the video, you may have missed the point I was making. That is not to say that higher mp is worthless, clearly I personally value high mp as I'm using an R5 (and chose it over my R6II which has much better AF); however, I'm saying that if one cannot afford to go with a high mp camera, then it's not something to obsess over or worry about because the other lower mp bodies are still very capable of producing great images with enough resolution for most applications and also have good features like solid AF systems, etc. There's zero need to wrongly extrapolate or infer that to mean I said high mp is worthless, because I did not say that, and to imply that's what I meant is definitely not true. Anyways, I hope you find some better videos for the stuff you're interested in out there.
