Wildlife Photography on Location | African River Safari with the Nikon D850 + Exposure Tips

Hey Guys!
In this Video we are out on the boat on the Chobe river for an African River Safari.
Before I headed out to Africa I was already excited for the possibility of working from the boat, designed by Pangolin these have been specially adapted for photography with Gimbal mounts and swivel chairs for ease of shooting - The chance to shoot form the river grants a different view from the standard over land safari, approaching form the water lots of subjects are far easier to get close to for some unique photographic opportunities (and we certainly had some of those!)
In the boat I'm shooting my trusty 300mm 2.8 VR II along with the D850 - probably my all round favourite camera on the planet tidd.ly/5e9ce68e
I also have a D5 on loan from Nikon UK (Thanks guys) with the 35mm on and the Nikon Z6 is doing all the filming!
I'll be posting more images over on my Instagram so be sure to drop me a follow @TomMasonPhoto / tommasonphoto
I was lucky enough to be invited out to stay with Pangolin Safaris in order to do some shooting and scouting for some future projects (stay tuned if you enjoy the videos and fancy travelling with me in the next few years!)
In regards to full integrity I was given the chance to travel out to Botswana free as part of a scouting mission ahead of leading my own tours back here in the future!
As always if you have any questions about the gear or wildlife photography in general pop them down in the comment below, You can check out more of my work over at www.tommasonphoto.com (new website coming soon) Please subscribe for future videos and of course feel free to share with anyone/groups you think might find the channel helpful!
You can find more about Pangolin Safaris here www.pangolinphoto.com/ and the awesome work they support with pangolin conservation here www.pangolin.africa/.
If you didn't know already, Pangolins (numerous species) are one of the most endangered animals on the planet, trafficking for "medicine" and other illegal trades has seen numbers decimated. By staying with pangolin safaris each night in the hotel supports their conservation, meaning whilst you get a luxury photo safari, you're also doing good, and I really rate that!

    I was on a scouting trip for running tours so had a boat on my own with a good friend (who’s filming me) for certain parts of my tour that enabled me to do my filming for these videos and shooting! On other days I was in the boat with other photographers but due to not wanting to ruin their trip out by me filming myself etc I kept my recording to the times when I was alone as curtesy for those others who were shooting.

    Great stuff, thanks! 2 questions, if you can answer: 1- which Pangolin tour did you take? 2- would the 300mm be your first option for this safari or a larger lens? Thank you.

  • @TomMasonPhoto

    @TomMasonPhoto

    5 жыл бұрын

    I was on a specialist tour organised separately from the normal packages in order to scout locations for my own tours (coming soon) The trip was a 3 week stay with over a week at the Pangolin Lodge in Chobe, 2 night on the house boat before heading to the Delta, that we will get to on the next episode... and I think everyone will want to go there! For me personally I LOVE my 300 2.8, I have used it for years now and know it very well in regards to the distance I need to be away and how to use it for the images I'm after. Pairing it with TC's (a 1.4 and 2.0) I had more than enough reach to cover everything from Birds to the larger mammals. For myself I like the more environmental approach so being a little further away than with a 400/500 suits me well. On the boat I never found the 300mm a problem, but if you want lots of frame filling Kingfishers, a 400mm-500mm might be better, but its all down to your own style and shooting - I could have easily made lots of the images on have easily made lots of the images on a 70-200!

    @@TomMasonPhoto Thank you Tom! I was going through the options that Pangolin has and wondering which one you had chosen. Now I know :-) As for the 300mm, I understand what you mean and I was trying to understand whether you spoke of that option ("environmental" photo) in the video as a solution to mitigate the lack of reach or as a preference. I now understand it is clearly a preference and one that I share with you. That is one of the reasons why I dislike Instagram with wildlife photography: as it is meant to be seen on smartphones, one ends up using close ups particularly with smaller creatures (something I end up doing myself) or the animal will be too small to be seen. Instagram has been contributing to turn close ups into mainstream, which is a pity. Again, thank you!

    It indeed is a scouting trip for a future tour, don’t have a confirmed price yet as working out some details for the plans and locations - price will be on the higher side just due to logistics and locations (the next episode we go onto the delta) so that adds but it’s worth it... as you hopefully see! - I’ll add a link to a new mailing list for on a comment on this video this week so those who are interested can get the first details as soon as they are ready!

    Shooting panoramic images I do by taking two images with an amount of overlap, then joining together in Lightroom. For wildlife subjects you have to get pretty efficient at switching and making the two images in quick succession in order to get the composition and framing, often a decent support is handy for keeping everything well positioned. Cheers, Tom

    Great video, as usual. Does the 300mm f/2.8 give you enough reach on your full frame D850, or are you having to crop quite a bit during post-processing to bring your subject in closer? Also, what is the highest ISO you are willing to push your D850 to? Thanks for another cool and helpful video!

  • @TomMasonPhoto

    @TomMasonPhoto

    5 жыл бұрын

    Mac, the 300mm I’m finding perfect for my style - often a little more “in the environment” but most of these shots you’re seeing a full frame or with very slight 5-10% crops, the panos I’m doing to gain extra space because sometimes the 300mm is too close so it certainly works for me. For some stuff I can certainly see some people might like more reach, maybe a 400mm 2.8 but for my shooting the 300 is perfect, that’s why I’ve had it in the bag for 7 years now! The D850 ISO wise can go to 6400 quite easily but for most of my shooting in Africa or in the UK I rarely need above 1600 anyway because I work with fast glass
