WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY in Ecuador (a7R4 + 200-600 G)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this Ecuador video, I try to photograph 3 wildlife targets: Tropical Parulas, White-whiskered Hermits, and a baby Armadillo. I've been scouting different areas in the jungle where each of these species like to hang out. I set out with the Sony a7R4 and 200-600G lens for an awesome day of Wildlife Photography! Hope you enjoyed and let me know what you think! Happy birding!

    Great shots! A couple of things just for you information: you were probably seeing nine-banded armadillo near Mindo, and the odd thing about the young is that they are born as identical quadruplets. You probably had found a hermit lek, where males gather to sing and display to attract females.

    Great shots and gorgeous locations! Another pro tip for walking bends on trails - mostly in forests or woodlands where the trail is well lit and the sun is behind you - is to make sure that your shadow doesn't lead the way around the bend as that will also startle quail, pigeons, finches, etc., which may be foraging on the trail or low in the vegetation beside the trail.

We kinda like the idea of discovering a new place by ourselves. But I met a few people taking tours while we were there and they all seem very pleased. I don't think there's a good or bad decision, it's all up to personal preferences. Either way you'll see a ton of birds 🙂

    Dear Stefano, I absolutely love the pictures you're getting while in Ecuador! I recently upgraded to the A7R IV and had the 200-600 (previously on the A7III) but am experiencing a pretty annoying issue. Pretty much every shot has some sort of blur/unshaprness, especially noticable at 1:1 in Lightroom. I've tested at many shutter speeds, even 1/2500+ but this doesn't seem to matter. I was wondering if it's possible for you to provide me and/or the viewers with a few RAW images so I can verify the issue? This would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

  • @StefanoIaniro

    @StefanoIaniro

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hey! I have a video coming out in a couple of days comparing the 100-400 vs the 200-600. I will be including RAWs in the video. If you watch the video and still want me to throw some in a folder for you, just let me know! 🙂 You may have already tried these/know about these issues that can occur, but just to make sure here are a couple things you can try/keep in mind: - Atmospheric distortion - if your subjects are far out and you're doing heavier crops, your photos may appear soft due to heat waves, fog, etc. - Not sure if you're using higher ISOs, but the a7RIV doesn't handle noise too well. I have some images taken in crop mode around ISO 6400 and at 1:1 don't appear too sharp, but zooming out a little bit reveals they are in fact sharp. - Possibly a bad copy of the lens! Bring it to a camera store to test it against their copies. - Take bursts instead of single images. Sometimes the shake caused from initially hitting the shutter causes minor motion blur in images. Taking bursts allows more time for your hands to stabilize and increases the probability of getting sharper images. Again, you might already know the above. Just wanted to add it in case it might be helpful. If you have any questions, ask away, I'd love to help if I can!

    @@StefanoIaniro Awesome! Indeed I am aware of the potential issues you mentioned. The weirdest encounter so far was a test shot of a sturdy branch, approximately 10m away from me. Camera on a gimbal head/tripod, shooting at 1/1600 f6.3 iso 320. Shot a burst of 7 or 8 images, just one was kind of sharp at 1:1 and the rest were not even close. This was never even close to an issue on the A7 III, with that camera I've shot handheld at 1/80 iso 2000 with close to pinsharp results. I'm at the point of considering low temperature (2-5 degrees Celcius) as a potential cause, even though I can't imagine this should cause this issue. Anyway, I appreciate your extensive answer / help and look forward to the video :) If/when I figure out what the issue was I'll let you know! Have a good one.

    Curious as to why you're shooting at such high iso's? Your video looked a little blown out then I see your photos and they too are a little over exposed. I see your posted settings for the stills and your at 1600, 1/125th, F6.3 on birds sitting on branches? Why not open that 200-600 up to F5.6, put that iso down to 100, and shoot at like 1/20th? Granted I'm not there, and I know the canopy creates some shadows, but if you shoot RAW and try and keep your iso at 100 you're going to have the full 15 stops of dynamic range that the A7RIV is capable of, and you're going to get a lot more from your pics. Unless I'm missing something. Awsome video aside from the exposure IMO, looks like a lot of fun.

  • @StefanoIaniro

    @StefanoIaniro

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hmm, that's strange. I have watched it on a couple devices and I noticed on my TV the whole video was darker, and on my laptop is brighter. Looking at my photos in Lightroom, I actually feel like the subjects are a tad underexposed haha. The backgrounds themselves may be overexposed due to light trickling through the canopy, but I was mostly exposing for the subject, not the background. I could have brought down highlights in post to adjust, but it's kind of a personal preference, I do like the brighter backgrounds. In terms of settings, the 200-600 only goes to f/5.6 in the shorter zoom ranges. Once you're out at further zooms you're restricted to 6.3 or lower. So f/6.3 at ISO100, my shutter speed would have to be lower than 1/20th for most of the situations I was in. I spoke about it in a previous video, but I like to keep my ISO around 800-1600, that way I only worry about adjusting shutter speed, which is beneficial for fast moving subjects (like the warblers and hermits in the video). Even at the fruit feeders there is usually a lot of action so birds tend to move around quite a bit. Hope that clarifies a bit and glad you enjoyed! It was a really fun day!

    I've been intrigued by your Ecuador series, as my wife is a native Ecuadorian (Quito). She goes back every winter to visit family, so I'm going to go with her December 2020 to do some bird photography. Tandayapa and Cosanga look like interesting places to me, and not too far from Quito. But, I keep seeing the Magic Birding Circuit listed online when I research those areas, and it seems that the lodges in those areas want you to go on predesigned tours with other photographers. I want to be on my own, or perhaps with a hired guide from time to time. I'm looking for just a room, or a room and meal package. Did you stay at places where you could sleep and eat, and otherwise go out on your own? And do you have any that you'd be willing to share? I haven't seen a video yet where you discuss lodgings and food, though it's possible I simply missed it somewhere :-)

    Yep! I believe next weeks video should be the 100-400 vs 200-600, so I'll give all my thoughts in that video 🙂

    @@StefanoIaniro looking forward to it. I am worried I'll need both lenses! Lol. I own the 100400GM on my R4 and like it a lot...so selling it isn't an option :(

    @@StefanoIaniro yes that's what I am worried about. The close focus at 3 feet of the 100400G is invaluable, and I prefer it to to a dedicated macro because the 100400 focuses much faster than a macro can, and I don't have to get excessively close which scares critters away. On the other hand, for rach the 200600 will equal 900mm in APSC mode on the R4 vs 600mm with the 100400. The advantage is you can do without an extender and keep your aperture. I think Sony made this hard on purpose :)

    Yeah I've used aps-c cameras in the past. I photograph in a lot of darker situations though so the full-frame sensors have been a blessing. Luckily with the a7R4 I get the best of both worlds!
