Wildlife Photography From a Kayak

Спорт

I have been photographing wildlife from a kayak for over 25 years. These are some of the things I have learned. My friend Dave Burns accompanied me on this particular trip.

Great work and thanks for the tips! I've been trying to figure out how to take my D7000 with me in my kayak, safely and yet keep it handy.

@@photoguy73 thanks. I have one question, if you will indulge me, do you recommend any dry bags?

@@johnjackson9601 I'm afraid the one I use is ancient, perhaps Eddie Bauer? But there many out there. Just make sure the opening is large enough to get your camera and lens in and out quickly. They can be large, but that lets you access your gear quickly.

1st thank you for the video. On your Alaska kayak I saw a rudder. does it make a big difference as far as photographing birds go?

No, not at all. I never even used it. I believe they are helpful for long, open water trips with wind.

Photoguy-are there any accessories you would recommend? Where did you get that long arm that held your movie camera? What speed do you shoot at to keep photos sharp? I have lower-end cost cameras; Nikon 3100D and Canon T3. the longest Zoom I have is 300...will this suffice? Thank you for the kayak shooting tips and inspiration!

I would put as much of my money as I could into good lenses. A DSLR with 12 MP or more and fairly fast frames-per-second is helpful. The pole holding the GoPro camera used for filming is just an extendable painters pole, available at many home improvement stores. A dry bag is useful, but a garbage bag can work in a pinch. I suggest a shutter speed of 1/500 second or faster. With practice you can hand hold slower. A D3100 and a 300mm lens should allow you to get some great bird photographs. The more you practice the better you'll get at it. Good luck.

How did you fasten the painters pole? I was planning on using one for a stake! Do you ever stake yourself to stop movement of your kayak? thanks again for the very useful information. I like the drone shots btw ;)

The painters pole is held by an adjustable fishing rod holder. I have not tried to stake myself to the bottom. I use a lens with vibration reduction, and years of practice have taught me to hand hold at fairly slow shutter speeds.
