I'm originally from Norway, but I have lived in Scotland since I studied wildlife biology a long time ago. In Scotland, I’ve worked as an ecologist and occasionally still do some freelance ornithology work. I have a passion for the natural world and I believe it’s our duty to keep as much wildlife and ecosystems alive for ourselves, for future generations and for nature's own sake.
Combining my passion for wildlife with an obsession for photography has been my ultimate pursuit for the last couple of years and I’m enjoying the journey more every day.

Loving your videos and the experiences you share with us. I do wildlife photography and to me it’s being out and sharing time with the magnificent wildlife we have, the photograph is just a caught moment in time to remember as I get older, and to share that experience with others less fortunate than ourselves who never get to see these beautiful creatures.

Great vlog. Cairngorm National Park is my favourite in Scotland. When I lived in Aberdeen I spend every weekend in Cairngorms. I knew every stone on every pathway. I was able to suggest you to go by the Ancient Pine Forest between Braemar and Crathie. I saw male capercailles few times there. You can go to the Lochnagar alos to see red deers, roe deers, red and black grouses, ptarmigans, golden eagles etc. Too many favourite pathways are there. You can see Dippers in Loch Muick. Enjoy !!!!

Hi Espen. I started wildlife photography in 2016 & as much as I appreciate there are better photographers out there it doesn’t stop me from setting some personal goals which is the only way I can assess my growth as a photographer. You say you love to run but have already made up your mind you will never win a marathon which I think is quite a negative thought process as you’ve already lowered your bar! Yes, some may think it’s a realistic thought process, but I don’t. As soon as you stop thinking about winning a marathon you lower your goals. Your a bloody good photographer who has the time & knowledge to put himself into positions to get amazing images of some interesting subjects. You do great videos that a lot of people love to watch including myself. My attitude is the higher you aim, the higher your growth will be. I have always had a dream of one day walking up onto that stage at the Natural History Museum & collecting The Wildlife Photographer of The Year award, will it happen probably not, but as soon as I start thinking that I bring a negative into my thought process. I say aim big & set your goals high & you’ll miss small, if you set your bar too low you’ll never achieve your true potential. Great video especially in such difficult surroundings & circumstances. Thank you very much Mark! I agree that you should set your bar high and that positive thinking and attitude is incredibly important. However, I also think that if you set the bar at winning in everything you do you're setting yourself up for a lot of dissapointment. I'm not saying don't aim high and go for growth, but you have to be willing to make the sacrifice that comes with aiming for the win in something like a marathon. I have to much photography to do right now 😉

Hi Espen, I really enjoy your videos and find them both inspiring and informative. I am not sure if I have the right gear to be able to great great shots but each time I go out I feel I am getting better. Sometimes I just like to get out and enjoy the experience, for me it is sometimes capturing a moment that no one can see and being able to share that. In the short term I want to get shots that I can perhaps print and who knows one day take 'the' shot. Keep up the great work and know that your videos are enjoyed and eagerly awaited all the way down in South Australia.

Awesome - loved the ptarmigan images! Shame about the weather on your high camp, I’ve definitely had some ‘exciting’ nights camping in the Cairngorms, but looks like you still had a great trip. If it was the night I’m thinking of - a Sunday in early June - that storm was bad enough in relative shelter on the NW coast so I’m not surprised you moved to lower ground!!

Hi Espen. Again, Thank you this video. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, your honesty, your experience and your love of Nature and wildlife. I loved the answer you gave concerning what exactly do you want to achieve in photography... Well basically you put into words what I've been doing for about three years now. I dearly love my husband and my grown-up boys... but when I'm out in the woods, on in a field I just lose track of time, forget things that bother me or take up too much importance in my mind when they shouldn't. I have the regular 9 -5 office job. and I'm sure I would not be as happy in work if wildlife photography was not part of my life. It's what makes me who I am today. The point is not to become ONE OF THE BEST PHOTOGRAPHERS - it’s reconnecting with nature, yourself and of course progressing in photography - just as you said. I took my husband out into the woods last Sunday and we had two full hours with 5 very active Siberian chipmunks. OK not the most exotic little creatures but the look on my husband’s face (like a 5 year old with an ice-cream) made me so happy to share that moment. I will always remember his face when I’ll look back at the photos I took. Photography is shared moments and happiness.

A massive part of my photography journey is about mental health and general health. Skills, fresh air, exercise, brain activity, relaxation, distraction, it all keeps my anxietyand depression in better check. Other than that, I strive to be an award winning photographer, safe in the knowledge I probably never will be BUT......the closer I get, the better I get, the more keepers I get, the happier I am with the images I take. So its a no pressure, no expectation journey towards whatever heights I do or dont reach. And it's great!

Again a nice video Espen. I especially like the part about why you like to do wildlife-photography, even when you know that you never going to 'beat' other photographers or make a $100K picture. It's all about being out there, feel a connection with the environment you're in and enjoying what you do. Another question on this subject: have you ever noticed that your senses are getting 'stronger' (more sensitive hearing, sight etc.) when you are out in nature? It sometimes happens to me, even during a visit to a blind for example. Whenever that happens, it can really make my day, even when I don't get one picture I like. Now a little bit more down to earth: my offer still stands, whenever you are in the Netherlands give me a call and I would love to show you some nice areas over here. A couple of nice cold beers from my fridge included :). Keep the videos coming!

  • @EspenHelland

Thanks William! Will let you know 🙂👍🏻 I feel that I hear and see more in nature the more time I spend in it. Things I wouldn't notice before. Especially with sound, maybe because when you start to recognise individual bird and animal song/sounds it gets easier to pick out what used to just be background noise.
