When Michael gets the hint hopefully. I still don't know how anyone can defend him as a HoD, everything Ireland does its low effort and reflects a HoD that just doesn't care, him simply saying he cares doesn't wash in light of all the evidence pointing to the contrary. A documentary maker in his 60s with no background in music production weather that be songs or shows should not be the HoD in Eurovision, his record sums him up perfectly.

The odds of them getting into the top 10 let alone qualifying especially in that harder Semifinal is big exaggeration. It's clear you know nothing about Eurovision, it's not bad to defend your country no matter how shitty they perform but downright saying that they will win or get high results is top level clownry.

@@hughson9229 What age are you do you mean to tell me that all of the songs that got into the final was better than this or a few other songs that didn't get in. It's not about just music it's a stage show years ago it was about music the words and the message the song sent out that is gone now like the Romanian entry I haven't heard that on the radio but it go into the final. The song that won was the best and it deserved to win. And unlike you I don't think I know anything about music but I do comment what I think and I don't call people names. I just tell them if you don't like my comment that's fine with me as what you think won't really matter anyway.

I REALLY think that tg4 should take over our main Eurovision, ‘solas’ this year in the junior show was beautiful, and it showed with our 4th place ranking

Wild youth is actually a great band. It’s a pity they changed just for Eurovision. If artist started to see it as a massive stepping stone in there career and sent quality we could win. The issue is Ireland and Uk see Eurovision as a bad career choice. Where the likes of Sweden see it as the best career choice. So they get quality artists and producers.

As a fellow Irishman, it is just another one of those years where I have no expectation. At least your reaction makes me look at it in a comedic way because that music video is something else. But remember RTE have a "lack of resources" when it comes to Eurovision! Who cares that less financially sound countries like Albania, Moldova, Romania, Ukraine (in an underground for goodness sake) produce better national finals, we'll just keep making excuses about money. One thing I do believe is that the quality of songwriting is lacking in Ireland, especially for Eurovision. However, our ultimate success and promotion of the contest is the responsibilty of the HOD who is failing far too long. I don't see the neccessary investment in new Irish artists, songwriting camps, platforms to promote music that would chart in Europe let alone Ireland. It's a rant because we have been so backwards with this for far too long, but who can blame me when we are given this "revamp" to be optimistic about.

The lack of resources excuse makes me seethe. We’re one of the richest countries in Europe and yet we won’t bother investing in our musicians and artists. The myopia is astounding. They can’t see how the competition has changed and how presenting a vibrant, innovative Irish music scene to 60+ million viewers might have a positive effect here. And it would, directly and indirectly, musically, artistically, economically. Hell, even in terms of national self esteem. I feel Tom’s irritation and frustration here

@@deadzoo I feel anyone who believes the crap Michael Kealy says, he's just trying to save his own skin. Everything Ireland do in Eurovision is wrong and that goes far deeper than money. The lack of enthusiasm he has for the job is telling.

The fact that they are nice to look at was the biggest thing they had going for it. When I saw the official video I was so disappointed haha

I thought the way they brought the different parts of the song together towards the end was the revamp. But I'm not sure😅

The singer has a very expressive face. What´s the point with hiding all of his face expressions?

Seriously, am I watching an other Eurovision?? Where are all those great songs so many people talk about ??? 29 songs are revealed and I only like 3!!! 3 actually good songs, around 15 mediocre ones and more than 10 worse than mediocre. For me 2023 seems so far to be the weakest Eurovision after 2002! Ireland btw is amongst the mediocre ones for me. Not too bad, just basic. Currently in my top15.

Also I wouldn’t say this semi is great because it’s a terrible year but by comparison to SF2 it’s far more competitive whereas something trashy could slip through in SF2

@@Crowleas Maybe those songs just don't fit your taste. For me, it's a rather mid year, there are nine songs so far that are secured in my top 20 that I really like. But what fans were talking about semi-final 1 being the stronger semi-final is the number of songs that have the strongest support and potential to score highly in the final.

Im not going to count Ireland out . On the semi final night their performance may be great and people will vote for them . I hope so Eurovision grand final is not the same without Ireland .

Totally agree Tom, only Ireland could do a revamp and end up with a worse result. At least they are reasonably good-looking lads, so ''I know what'' thought some idiot, ''let's cover their faces with silver sacks''! You couldn't make it up!

Your pain is real Tom 😬 Either this or Malta as a show opener? It is generic, however I am not convinced that it will completely flop. There is a hint of U2 in the guitars which folk may click into, plus I am sure this will get a good reception in Liverpool.

Adgy's entry is in my playlist of 2023 lost songs. The studio cut is dynamic and the voice is good. I know he isn't a natural performer but he would not be in last spot.

This was so funny to watch xD I feel your pain too though, it's less funny when it's your own country :/ I'm not sure if Ireland can change anytime soon, this extremely low effort is not surprising from Ireland at all unfortunately. I think this is probably the most obvious non qualifier of all time. One thing I disagree with is that it's in the middle of a lot of people's rankings, personally I have it second to last and I think many people have it all the way down there simply because it can't get more generic than this

Ireland: it's a Nice Song but I doubt it will win. I currently have it at Number 11, It sounds like something a Sports team would sing. I would love to see Ireland Host it. My aunt lives in Northern Ireland but my cousin, takes me to places on the Irish Side, And the Food is Fantasic. The UK is known for its Fish and Chips but go to Donegal they have the best Fish and Chips. So if Ireland Hosts it would give me a Chance to see more of Ireland.

I like it and wish them the best but would love to hear your reaction to some of the songs that didn't make the national final because there are some great ones knocking around! My entry for Ireland is on my channel, if you're interested 🇮🇪❤️

I entered it for 2023 :/ they did ask me to send them something for next year too so I am working on something more uptempo but I feel quite disheartened. It seemed to get down to the wire, only heard back a few hours before the final 6 were announced :/

i really like the sound of it. your voice is lovely and it the vibe reminds me of Kate Bush a bit and i like the piano a lot. I think it would elevate the song though if it has more progression though. Like maybe hold back on some instrumentals and introduce them gradually throughout the song, so that it doesnt feel too repetitve. good luck next year!

I don't see what was revamped? It sounds exactly the same to me. The masks are really WIERD and if they perform like that in the semi finals, they are going LAST PLACE haha! If there weren't so many good songs in Semi Final 1 AND so many groups/rock songs, maybe this would have stood out more?

@@ESCTom I highly doubt this look will carry through to Eurovision. Remember Brooke with the money gun, then slumber party, we’ll throw something together in a week and it will probably turn out fairly decent.

Oh Tom, I really despair for you… the revamp is minimal and if anything I think it sounds a little worse now - it sounds like they’ve added a couple more instrumental tracks which gives the song a slightly better build, but by the end there’s too much going on and it sounds too noisy. Adding a cheesy stadium clap bit at the end doesn’t constitute improvement. Plus the masks in the music video are utterly bizarre… one of the things they maybe have going for them is that they’re charismatic performers, and they’re literally covering that up. You know who else released a revamp? Connolly, with Midnight Summer Night. Small changes, but it sounds like a much more complete song than the demo. I don’t care that she’s less experienced, this would have been a refreshing risk for Ireland, even if it didn’t qualify. For me, this is up there with Poland in terms of national final disappointments this year.

Btw, it’s not necessarily the band’s fault. By the looks of things, they’ve been given very little budget and support from RTÉ. And if RTÉ don’t have the money to spend on all the stuff you need for a modern Eurovision entry (video, social media support, costumes, staging, etc), maybe we need to take a few years off.

Oh Tom!!! What more did you expect!!! I think the only thing that will help Ireland qualify is if its the final song before the break... "IF" they can give a GREAT performance, it might just be generic enough to be memorable and pick up some votes

@@ESCTom yup, I remember nobody liked Ireland in 2018 before the live shows. Last in the odds to qualify from the toughest semi-final ever and was often referred to as "a demo track". It was also meant from Brendan Murray in 2017, so it was actually an Irish eurovision reject from 2017, sent in 2018.

This song is 4th last with me. Why was it even short listed for consideration?

I think maybe the masks are like the symbol of we are one or something. But honestly for me it looks kind of creepy 😂😂 Subwoolfer was a good example were masks worked, this really isn’t. I must say i didn’t download it before but i probably will now. It has elements added to make it a bit better. But yes i don’t really think they would have changed the whole song anyway. But it’s fine. It’s not fine in the first semi though 😂😂

The masks are silly and desperate and don't suit that song. I think the look was literally what was revamped though; certainly wasn't the music. I have to say I used to think the song had a kind of honest, uplifting quality - but now it just looks a mess..

The lack of money and effort in this video is WILD. Sorry for you Tom. I’m from the UK so I know what it’s like to REALLY not like your own countries entry. Not to rub salt in the wound as I know you said it’s very mid in everyone’s rankings rather than bottom in some and higher in some but this is actually bottom of my rankings 😂 if I can’t get through a song without cringing then it goes at the bottom sorry 🙈

Some of the instrumental is revamped, guitar riff after 1st chorus, 2nd verse is trimmed and has more “volume”, bridge section made more “anthemic”, I guess? But none of these changes will change people’s minds. If you like it you probably still will, likewise if you don’t

Can i just say I can hear a difference in this and the other audio video that was out, I have been listening to the other one and we are one thats why the masks are been wore to show no difference in the 4 people cos they are one or all the same , also the backing in this is different, and so what if it dosent get in thats nothing new last years didnt get in and in 2013 ryan didnt get in and look back at some of the ones from other countries that got in old grannies . lol

That sure was a song 🙃 All kidding aside, it doesn’t sound as bad as it originally did (it was at my bottom until Poland 💀), but I would be surprised if this made it past semi final 1. There are just more bands with better songs in my opinion.

Given that Ireland is competing with Finland, Sweden and Serbia, I can’t realistically see light at the end of the tunnel for them. I’m desperate to see Ireland back in their glory days 🇮🇪 👏 but if the UK could turn things around after an arguably worse run, it’s possible for Ireland too

The whole masks concept is quite bizarre. The fact that they are good looking lads is possibly one of the things that might just get them a few extra points...

They should’ve just picked a different song entirely. I don’t think anyone would have been upset about that

@@BoB10 I don't think that is a rule. Last year Malta submitted a song that didn't get very good feedback and changed it. It can be done up to a certain point I think

I like the song But i hope they come up with a better face mask design. The mask looks like a piece of a belly dancing costume because of the material of it.

Shame on Wild Youth wasting ESC Tom's time... The Late Late Show performance was cute and endearing, this was just awful and cringe.

Oh dear, sweet Tom, my heart goes out to you and all Irish Eurofans. RTÉ just really has no clue apparently. I absolutely hate these sacks over their heads and truly pray that this is not their idea for Liverpool. The production seems to be turned up slightly to me, but it actually sounds more bland. I truly don't get why they've dropped their original style for this flavourless stuff. That Ireland has gone from Brooke to this... It makes me want to pull my hair out. Btw Israel dropped its song and it's also way better than this...

I actually looked at the video after listening to your reaction. I prefer the revamp. There’s a good few changes. The video is shit. I don’t get the concept. Listen back there are differences. The revamp is Defo better!

I think there is a good bit of a revamp here. Clear beat change at the chorus and also a better transition from verse to chorus. Also the change at the end. I do think it’s an improvement.

Maybe RTE is saving their money for the live staging. And if they fall short, sure the lads are already dressed to do a glamorous bank robbery. 😝

I will say what I said on the revamp's music video The song feels like getting wine drunk and then falling asleep on the couch, only to wake up and find that you left the TV playing Dhar Mann in your stupor. 3/10 - it's living in my Bottom 5, I'd rather have a song that is BAD than a song that's mid. Like San Marino is so bad that it's FUNNY at least.

I don't know why people hate the song. I actually love it. For me the most radio-friendly song Irish had sent for many many years. This is still a Top 10 song for me. Tom, you're right. There's no revamp there but that's ok. I don't think there's a need to. Why fix when it's not broken. Better than Brooke's.

Honest to God, if Ryan O'Shaughnessy's song hadn't been themed around a gay couple and has been toned down a tiny bit in the name of Mass Appeal™, what's the likelihood that Ireland would be currently sitting on a decade long non-qualification streak? It feels like they really lucked into that one, because if you exclude that and jedward, Ireland hasn't really contributed anything to the contest in the 21st century. It's absolutely depressing, but at this point Ireland is more likely to send us disappointment than anyone else in Europe. At least the fans always love the San Marinese artists.

I am OBSESSED with the masks! Why are they there? Was that the revamp? Are they embarrased (I'd be)? Did they record the video on the way to a jazzy bank robbery? So many questions!!

Well. As far as revamps go it's.....subtle? I don't know what I was expecting but this wasn't it. Lipgloss on a pig ... hahahahaha i'm sorry that really made me laugh. Still hoping they can really elevate this on a big stage though. Fingers crossed. However, given who else is in this semi the odds are stacked against them.

Oh dear. I was hoping you could explain the meaning of the hiding of their faces under these … glitter towels? I used to love Ireland in Eurovision (and I still love country and people) but I don’t like what happened to their ESC entries. So sad.

What happened is we allowed foreigners to get involved (aka Swedes for the most part).

😂 Tom I was not expecting a reaction from you for the revamp but I knew from the thumbnail that youd have a lot to say on it, id imagine not favourable . Agree with what you said before the reaction, it pisses me off when they go on about the "formula" like no there's no formula ,just stop sending bland songs. I knew the revamp wouldn't be much. I dont like the masks, seems random. I think tbh the first verse and chorus aren't revamped, a little more instrumentation. The 2nd chorus and the last chorus are new. I do think the revamp was better just because the first version was really bland (like it wasn't only bad, it was the same the whole way through, at least now its a bit different) but yeah I gave out about Ulrikke doing a cliched clap chorus and now Wild Youth are doing it. Im like 90% certain were not qualifying (only reason I left 10% is live performance, they are competant performers, who id imagine would have a budget for staging and I think it might open the semi *between us and Malta ig, i doubt Norway or Serbia would*) Its just annoying that we can point out all the bland,clichéd elements of our past entries and this one yet tbh our selection on the night was terrible, this was one of the stronger ones, feels a bit like Rte dont really A. Give a sh*t about eurovision and B.Dont really know much about it especially nowadays, idk how we'll get out of this rut like our neighbours did. Idk if this is being too dramatic, but I am curious (prob isnt an answer yet or even in general to difficult to say) should we like try a diff selection method or would it be wiser to withdraw and perhaps give TG4 a chance in the future to see if they get on better (after our jesc entries which for the most part have been a lot better than our adult entries).

Ireland need a new HoD. Michael Kealy has been there for over a decade now and has been horrendous. We are having the same conversation every year and he just continues to prove he’s way out of his depth.

I have no idea what they changed. But the song lost with the static video. And what is the point of wearing a mask? Give that band a banana to see if they get some energy to make it better. I feel for you Tom. It makes me sad that in a country with so many talented musicians and singers... they can't select a proper act. It is like finding hay in a haystack and they find the needle...

The most tragic part is someone like Connolly was robbed of the chance of showing off her music to Europe and the world just Wild Youth could come promoting Swedish schlager rock that sounds nothing like what they would normally write. We deserve to bomb for this and I hope they watch Joker Out closely and realist what they should have done all along.

thats exactly it. If Connolly had gone, or even ADGY, it would have felt like progress. like we were sending talented artists and developing our place. Even if they had flopped and NQed, its a step in the right direction. This is definitely a step backwards

@@ESCTom I still cant get over a song from an English speaking country actually trying to rhyme 'unique' & 'freak'...Aisel would be proud of that... To be honest it might be a blessing because if we sent Connolly , regardless of her result, while it was progress it would hide from that fact that there seriously needs to be change in the delegation. At least if this come last in the SF then we have more pelters to throw at RTE now.

It's really weird because nothing about this feels like Wild Youth. The song doesn't sound like it's theirs, the except for the setup of the video it doesn't feel like them, idk, i can tell the revamp that it's different but not alot like, really disappointed (Side note, personally Wild Youth were not the best live, Connolly was, song was better, vocals were just as good and her performance was actually interesting which is hard to do in Late Late studio. Plus, her revamp was realllyyyy gooood, like when I heard it a few days ago I was so devastated because it should be our representative)

Ireland had good options submitted to the national final why not just scrap the selection altogether and go internal with a good interesting song so you get more time to work out the kinks and actually revamp it based on public. Is rte's budget 3 euros or do they just not care? I don't get it...

RTE had to sell some of its land at the studio, so they dont have a lot to spend by the time they get a big hape ot it wages then its almost gone. you need to vote the 3euros go to the esc fund

I suspect the guys weren't available to film the video so it's actually other people which is why they are using those ridiculous silver masks

It’s not a bad song, I hope it will do well.

The song is actually shorter! I think we're down to 2.45 now. Agree that the video is a disaster though, it looks like it was made on a budget of €100.

This was my biggest fear with national final. I was worried that this song would win , and due to the fan base in Ireland , it won. Such a bland, 2010 , Coca Cola advert song. The whole selection was bad this year I thought but I think Connolly was different and had better chance. Backwards again from Ireland. Everything needs to change. Start by getting it off the late late show and perhaps let TG4 run it for once and not RTE. I’m a massive Irish Eurovision fan , but disappointed again for another year.

I don't know what to say. I mean... Yes, Ireland has a bad record qualifying but the songs we sent in the past 10-15 years aren't bad... Like, i don't know where's the problem. We sent great songs and failed to qualify (2014, 2015, 2019 - bad vocals, lovely song)... I agree that RTE seems to not care about esc anymore simply by how they handle the national final. I think here's the first step, a better national selection (remove the late night crap) and maybe better songs would want take part.
