This clip from "The Whale" movie shows some of the extraordinary events that happened in Nooka Sound, British Columbia, when a young orca, nicknamed Luna, happened on a running fire hose and made friends with kids and adults in boats.

My buddy Luna! He came to our dock once and I had the good fortune to play with him. Luna was so desperate for attention. You couldn't help but be very sad for him being all alone for a species which is incredibly desperate for interaction. Keep smiling Luna!

Pretty much every Orca studies humans. New Zealand Orca study humans quite a bit. And closely. The juveniles, like Luna, are incredibly curious about humans. It's incredible, the information they gather.

I think all whales are biologists and their study is in us. If we could just for a moment return the favor and become biologists in the study of whales, what a wonderful world this can be.

No doubt! Why not? Whales are interested and intelligent.
Interaction with a wild orca at this level is a one in a billion experience of a lifetime. Luna closed the gap between our 2 species and I am sure he changed those peoples’ outlook on life forever. Luna deserved much, much more than what we gave him. RIP Luna. May you swim and play in that ocean in the sky forever.

@@shawnkincheloesr5192 If I remember correctly, she died due to wounds by the encounter of a local fishing boat. It was speculated that the captain/crew rammed her on purpose, drove over her, hacking her with the propeller. But somehow the public had part of the blame, by "teaching" Luna not to shy away from boats/people.

@@nancyx591 this whale was famous in vancouver for a while. They think she had a disability with her vocalizations which meant she couldn't be around her own kind. But orcas as social, and Luna became habituated with human interaction instead and would approach/be friendly with anyone she came across. There's other videos on youtube of her playing tug-of-war with other boaters etc etc. Ultimately, I heard it got her killed as she was cut up by a boat motor.

Is there any kind of way, if a person take a trip or vacation up to New Zealand that they can pay the Orca Researcher to take them out to swim with the Orca’s ?
I know why the scientists banned contact with Luna, but they did it too late. Because he was so accustomed to the attention of people he grew to need them and the socialization he got with them. I can't help but wonder if he would still be alive if the contact had been allowed to continue. It makes me wonder if he wasn't charging to the coast guard boat in desperate need of attention. Watching him makes me so sad knowing how his end came about. He really made you love him.

8arbarossa killer whales at loro parque, a Spanish "entertainment" place that is extremely popular, were kept in tiny pools for three years because the owner didn't want to waste money while the park wasn't finished. they developed stomach problems and their teeth started falling out. one of their best trainers was torn apart by an orca not long after. get your head out of your ass, america is not the source of all problems in the world

ROFL...
Many years ago, when I was a teen, we went fishing out of Seward Alaska. As we approached Fox Island we started noticing something weird out toward the opening of the bay. We couldn't make out what it was but, there way a lot of vertical coming off the horizon. Our perception of it changed as we got closer. From some distance we thought maybe they were having sail boat races. As we got closer we realized it was Orcas spouting. A hundred maybe 2. We stopped the engine a few hundred feet away and the enormous pod were soon surrounding us. We hung out with them for almost 45 minutes. The Chief must have said move out because in an instant, they were gone. We watched them breech as they swam away into the horizon. I don't know for sure why so many were together. It had to have been a dozens of individual pods together. My best guess was they do this when the salmon are gathering to spawn. Like herding cattle, the more hands the easier the task. I go out every year about that same time and haven't seen it again. I pray I see it again just one more time and this time I'll take video. 🙏
What an amazing experience!! I would live on my boat just to stay by the whale. "I am queen of the whale touchers". Best line ever and something none of you will forget
Miracle! He is so gentle! He understood the hose.. and played back with it! Thank you for this... Queen of the Whale Touchers is so precious,! An Orca whisperer! Bless!
Luna's like "I'm helping. See, I'm helping!"
What a beautiful story. Thank you for being our friend Luna!
It's so sad Luna died. But it's so adorable to see Luna playing with you. What an incredible, loving and amazing experience! 😊♥️
OMG! It's actual pet Orca. BUT IN THE WILD!!! So awesome!

I agree with you 100%. They should be treated with love, kindness and respect.
When they interact like that, they love having their tongues scratched. Same as most dogs having their bellies scratched.
These parents and grandparents did everything RIGHT!! Im sure there's some idiots to say something dumb, but the reason this went so well is due to the energy level. Its the same as my friend who's a dog trainer and trains some some intense dogs and the kids are around the training and the 5 year old is a better dog handler than 90% of people out there. I adore this family !!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
Awesome the way orca was trying to spray you guys with water hose.Kids loved it.
Oh luna, luna, such a lovely creature. So friendly and playful. He loves hoomans. Ok ok. Just remember good memories about Luna. Bcoz it so beautiful

It makes me happy to see this. I love animals. Being a bigwave surfer .. Logging tens of thousands of hours swimming in open ocean I could write stories about whales for hours... The humpbacks of Maui are truly amazing. Duck diving honolua bay waves your submerged a few seconds underwater. Long enough to hear the beautiful songs of the humpback. Orcas are scary to me. I've always had a fear of them. But I think knowing what I know now I would not be able to resist swimming with them too. Now. Anyways I just love seeing people showing them love & attention most of all respect for these intelligent almost human emotions beings. Gives me hope for them
I've always been fascinated by these amazing animals. They are incredibly intelligent and they communicate in ways that we still don't understand.
Just beautiful....warms my heart! Thanks for the treat.
This is so beautiful! I want to play with that Canadian Orca! That's way better than SeaPrison World.

So very true.. They, just like their cousins, the Dolphins are very gentle, kind and over protective of humans, (Sonar).. unless they're held captive and abused/starved for training purposes, which they do endure *alot* before they inevitably snap. Like any living creature would, even us humans..
@LucysLifeInTheBabyAliveWorld

My theory was correct.... They are capable of love towards us, they just **don't** like being held captive.
Wow ! I just gotta do it one day. I just want to swim with a pod of wild Orca’s one day. I know that it sounds weird, but I just love to see those Orcas on video and they are by far the most majestic creatures of the seas in my opinion 🥰
Saw this on Saturday in Santa Monica and I LOVED it! :) Can't wait for it to come out on DVD.
These are amazing animals. There seems to be a high level of consciousness than what I see with dogs. Perhaps we don't give them enough credit.
They are beautiful creatures all they want is to be loved and left unharmed so many humans hurt animals they are ones that should be feared they can be monsters hurt them poor animals if u show love and loyalty to them them u treat you same
I believe “Luna” is one of the Beautiful and Majestic Animals (Mammal) Species we’ll see in Heaven. Thanks for sharing.
I love you, Luna!
That's such a good idea! Like a swinging toy for a cat! A firehose has a mind of it's own when its spewing water! Genius! Assuming Luna doesn't try swimming away with it. Lol
That is the coolest thing I’ve ever seen ever
Poor Luna, he was a real sweetheart
This brought a tear to my eyes, this just shows why orcas should not be living in a tank. They are such beautiful and friendly creatures.
That animal saw humans as its pod. People relieved its loneliness.
Aww... So cute!!! 😍
this is so heartwarming
This vid is so precious; you guys are very blessed.
I know this was 11 years ago, but I think the whale was enjoying it as much as the kids were.
They are fascinating animals to watch, it amazes me how an apex predator that even a great white shark fears chooses to be so gentle, with people, we could very easily be prey to them we have no way to defend ourselves, but they choose on their own terms to be friendly with us,
So sweet...love it! 🐳
outstanding .....Humans trust the whale enough to put their hands in to the whales mouth... and the whale has the smarts to say "thanks for scratching and the dental work."
The Orca can be playful, unlike the Shark, but they also like rough house play and Humans are too fragile to tangle with them. Enjoy them but keep your distance. They are related to dolphins that accounts for their good disposition and are air breathing mammals and not fish.
Im so jealous! Also RIP Luna I heard about your sad ending. :(
the most intelligent and advantageous animal in the world!!!!
Ohhh I love orcas ❤️
this is beautiful
RIP Luna. ❤
Beautiful creatures.
I love your video 💕💕🐬
Adorable. What a ham.
this makes me happy
Luna we love you!!
Touching their tongue, they ignore what dangerous could be the orcas
I love orca’s
Beautiful
I'm pretty sure they gave up trying to reunify Luna with her pod because of the simple fact that the pod most likely won't accept him back as well as the question on whether Luna could survive so far away from a familiar habitat. While Luna did well surviving on his own, he did it in a lifestyle that HE knew. Orca's travel at least a hundred miles in the vast ocean daily. Luna probably would not have been able to acclimatize to the lifestyle. I think the best thing people could have done was give him the attention he craved IN ORDER to protect him. If you can slap a $100,000 fine for "touching or looking" at Luna, why couldn't they say if Luna is coming near your boat, you have to shut your propellers off immediately?
@lestatsluver666
9 жыл бұрын
The gave up because the orca were not regularly there. When they did return they got SO close to reuniting Luna, but the native tribe intervened, distracting Luna and moving him away (they believed Luna was the spirit of a recently deceased chief)
Made my day
Amazing.
Ever since Luna's death I really hope they started installing protection around tugboat propellers!
Excellent video ..
Rip .beautiful Luna 😭😭
