My buddy Luna! He came to our dock once and I had the good fortune to play with him. Luna was so desperate for attention. You couldn't help but be very sad for him being all alone for a species which is incredibly desperate for interaction. Keep smiling Luna!

Pretty much every Orca studies humans. New Zealand Orca study humans quite a bit. And closely. The juveniles, like Luna, are incredibly curious about humans. It's incredible, the information they gather.

Interaction with a wild orca at this level is a one in a billion experience of a lifetime. Luna closed the gap between our 2 species and I am sure he changed those peoples’ outlook on life forever. Luna deserved much, much more than what we gave him. RIP Luna. May you swim and play in that ocean in the sky forever.

I know why the scientists banned contact with Luna, but they did it too late. Because he was so accustomed to the attention of people he grew to need them and the socialization he got with them. I can't help but wonder if he would still be alive if the contact had been allowed to continue. It makes me wonder if he wasn't charging to the coast guard boat in desperate need of attention. Watching him makes me so sad knowing how his end came about. He really made you love him.

Many years ago, when I was a teen, we went fishing out of Seward Alaska. As we approached Fox Island we started noticing something weird out toward the opening of the bay. We couldn't make out what it was but, there way a lot of vertical coming off the horizon. Our perception of it changed as we got closer. From some distance we thought maybe they were having sail boat races. As we got closer we realized it was Orcas spouting. A hundred maybe 2. We stopped the engine a few hundred feet away and the enormous pod were soon surrounding us. We hung out with them for almost 45 minutes. The Chief must have said move out because in an instant, they were gone. We watched them breech as they swam away into the horizon. I don't know for sure why so many were together. It had to have been a dozens of individual pods together. My best guess was they do this when the salmon are gathering to spawn. Like herding cattle, the more hands the easier the task. I go out every year about that same time and haven't seen it again. I pray I see it again just one more time and this time I'll take video. 🙏

The humpbacks of Maui are truly amazing. Duck diving honolua bay waves your submerged a few seconds underwater. Long enough to hear the beautiful songs of the humpback. Orcas are scary to me. I've always had a fear of them. But I think knowing what I know now I would not be able to resist swimming with them too. Now. I'm pretty sure they gave up trying to reunify Luna with her pod because of the simple fact that the pod most likely won't accept him back as well as the question on whether Luna could survive so far away from a familiar habitat. While Luna did well surviving on his own, he did it in a lifestyle that HE knew. Orca's travel at least a hundred miles in the vast ocean daily. Luna probably would not have been able to acclimatize to the lifestyle. I think the best thing people could have done was give him the attention he craved IN ORDER to protect him. If you can slap a $100,000 fine for "touching or looking" at Luna, why couldn't they say if Luna is coming near your boat, you have to shut your propellers off immediately?
