Wild Camping with CHEAP GEAR from Amazon and Go Outdoors!

I’ve put together a full wild camping setup for less than £150! It includes a 2 man tent, inflatable sleeping mat, sleeping bag, rucksack, and a complete stove set. Join me on this wild camp where I test it all out…
I’ll also show you all of the bits and pieces I grabbed from home to complete the setup, as well as the cheap food options I chose to take.
This is a budget setup designed for those looking to get into wild camping without spending a fortune. Though it is perfectly suitable for getting started, there are some items you may want to swap out or upgrade as you get more into the hobby. I’ll give some tips on what to update and why too.
Any questions drop me a comment!
Thanks for watching! Ben 🤓

Too stuff 👍 Cracking price on that rucksack. Great advice for anyone wanting to get outdoors but without the extortionate cost. My motto "buy last years kit, or the discontinued lines". Just because it's been superseded, doesn't mean it's no good.

Absolutely correct! Used gear is a great way to get some awesome but old gear that consumerists have stopped using because they bought the latests piece of kit. Just gotta be careful with the sloppy joes who tear and crack all their stuff (at least i don’t try to rip people off)

Had two Tamar 2s over the last five years and their superb value for money, standing up to high winds and driving rain. First one was mauled by a fox... whilst I was asleep inside! 😱 Top tip: Transport poles/pegs separately outsude rucksack and use compression bag on tent for more space inside 😉

  • @blindyeti7313

    @blindyeti7313

I have the tent too and fully agree, top tip. The tent is rather bulky unless compressed and the poles could do with having the sections shortened (although I'm aware that just introduces more potential splinter points) to make them more easily packed in smaller backpacks.

  • @robclarke2426

I was bought this tent as a replacement by someone that borrowed and lost my old trespass 2 man. An adequate replacement I’d say. It’s good for a budget tent but a little big and heavy for my camps as I like to hike far. The pitch of the outer fly door is a real problem in rain and even if it’s a dew heavy morning as any droplets can just fall into the inner as soon as you unzip it. My solution is to rig my OEX expedition tarp up over the front to to create an extra porch.

In my opinion the Tamar 2 is the best budget tent on the market, it's been around for 30 years so it can't be all bad. I've used mine in winds up to 50mph, but that's it's very upper limit and in heavy rain with little issue. I've camped beside the Tamar River and at over 2000ft. 5 years and still going strong. The pegs are terrible, the bag bulky and it is heavy, but the pegs can be changed the bag swapped for a compression drybag and the poles kept separate.

I think this is what my first tent was. I never went hiking with it, just stayed at campsites, and I loved it. I was really glad that the outer tent went up first (very helpful when it's raining) and that it never had a condensation problem. It was always big enough for me and the vestibule was handy. Unfortunately I had an issue with zip snagging and it tore a small hole in the inner tent. One night a hungry badger ripped that hole wide open and came in and stole my tortilla chips. Tear was far too big to repair. I got a cheap single skin tent from Argos to replace it and it only weighs around 1.7kg and that's now going to be my hiking tent. I still hold a grudge against that badger. #Tamar2me

I've got the same tent and alongside a sleepmat I can fit my few years old oex go outdoors chair and a small low table. I sit in the chair reading a book on campsites when it's been cold outside. I can see through the window at the rear too. I'm only 5'4" which probably helps but the tent works well. I camp just me and the dog and we haven't wild camped yet. I need a smaller packed sleepmat so will look at the one you used especially as you slept so well thanks for that🙂

Great vid to encourage people starting out. I have the same pan/stove set, albeit different branding. Seems fine for simple usage. I supplemented it with a Lixada frying pan for more flexibility (very good, and a lot cheaper than the Jetboil skillet). I won’t enter the compo this time as I already have a comparable tent. Thanks, enjoying the channel.

Good vid all you need for starting people shouldn't get 2 worried about the hydrostatic head I've got tents at 1200hh and there fine (an umbrella is about 450hh and they don't leak ) but yes fiberglass poles are the concern.as I've said before budget gear is good for summer or when it's not that windy so cheap gear does work for those conditions.

I have a Eurohike Backpacker 2 DLX and it's a great tunnel tent 3 & 1/2 season I'd say. (sub £60). I bought it in 2020. since I bought the Blackthorn 1 man stealth tent, sprayed it, upgraded the poles and guys and seam-sealed it, it can take some wind and gales and bit o' rain too. First proper try was up the road, Parlick Fell. Did okay, frost and wind and rain, ney bother. Thanks for posting and look forward to the next fella.

We had 2 of those stoves & cook sets too. Nowt wrong with the stoves, they work a treat but the cooking pots soon went rusty inside & the shine was lost to a matt finish a bit like a chalk board. About the cheap tent pegs that were included... it is always fun and useful to learn how to make natural tent pegs out of material found on location. However, sometimes it rains and carrying a set of light weight pegs for emergency use is always a good idea.

Great vid as always. How funny you got the best night sleep using cheap kit! I’ve had issues with Eurohike in the past for a first tent it might well do the job by the looks of it. 👍

Fantastic video bro it's good to see a review of budget gear as so many are centered around ultralight ultra expensive gear that only a few can afford and newcomers won't want to splash the cash for a first time out keep jp the great reviews 👍

Good stuff champ. I do like the budget series stuff. $150-$200 set up via Aldi/Decathalon and others will get most folks a decent one or two nights out 🙂 No UK address so Good Luck to your UK subs!

Nice video Ben. I’ve just subscribed that’s how much I liked it. Fancy opening up a debate on cobs. Of course it’s a batch particularly if you are from Coventry. It’s also very useful to let people know that less expensive equipment is quite adequate. Oh and I totally agree nobody wants a cold arse.

I’m taking my son away for an overnight camp on budget gear. I haven’t been camping in 20-odd years. I bought the Tibet 65+ (£40) and the Tamar 3, second hand (£40). If all goes well, we’ll go later in the year again. Have a great spring & summer everyone 👍🏻 Good luck to people in the giveaway.

#TAMAR2ME That's a good set up for starting wild camping. There's to many people out there with hillibergs or super expensive gear, it's good to see there is reasonably priced gear out there

Good video Ben, great choice of kit for the cost. To be honest a lot of the items wouldn't need upgraded, the cookset, stove, sleeping mat and pack all look just fine, replace if/when they're worn out. For me the tent and sleeping bag would be the 1st upgrade, in the case of the tent that would mainly be due to the type of groundsheet and fibreglass poles plus the pack size/weight. As for the rucksack, that style is normal for me, when I started out the top of the range packs were almost identical and heavier. Interesting that you always keep the inner tent attached, that's something I've never done, I've always pitched the flysheet (on a flysheet 1st tent obviously) and then attached the inner even on our largest family tent, Vango Equinox 450. I prefer to pack my tent away keeping the often wet (from rain or condensation) flysheet separate from the inner. I've often pitched the fly then got inside with waterproofs on, cooked my meal and sorted myself out before thinking about attaching the inner, personal preference of course but I sold a Terra Nova Laser after one outing because I couldn't detach the inner. I have a similar airmat with integrated pillow, I really like it but add a closed cell foam mat in cold weather. I have the same 1st aid kit, bought after seeing your review a while back, great little kit when you modify the contents to suit your needs, I carry mine every day, fits in my cargo pocket nicely. As always, good job, like your down to earth attitude and honest opinion, different from most people out there who just repeat the same opinions as others. Thumbs Up as Always
