Wild, Brutal and Breathtaking Scotland | The Applecross Pass
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
With the weather wetter than ever, it was a close call as to whether we were going to cross the famous Applecross pass (Bealach na Ba).
As the weather cleared, some of the finest scenery and roads on earth was revealed.

As someone who lives in Scotland I am definitely guilty of taking the scenery here for granted. This video is a great reminder of how lucky we are up here.

I know those places well and drove them often during the last 25 years and I am German 😂 But my passion for Scotland, Whisky, Bagpipes and Bikes let me travel every year to Scotland and the Road of the Cattle is amazing. The Applecross Inn always welcomes me. Scottish people are awesome. Now as my own Cask of Whisky from Islay has been delivered to me it’s time to share 371 bottles with friends 🎉😅 Slainte Mhath Freddie from WhiskyPapa. Love that video bringing back memories. Will drive this road in August again😊

Without the rain there would be no overwhelmingly luxuriant green beauty but there would be hoards of tourists. Neither would there be that joyous feeling when the clouds part and the sun arrives again. It thrilled me to the core as a child and it still does sixty years later. ❤

That's a good point, that you appreciate the sunshine much more than we do here in Australia - here they're actually happy when it rains!!! As long as it know when to stop that is...
This just .. looks the best time ever. Ever. Living it vicariously through you Freddie. Scotland is unapologetically wild, stunning and beautiful.

Scotland ❤ nothing to add. Safe ride always!
God I am sooooo homesick. I spent my childhood in Glen Muick, Cairngorms and I miss it and my family (all gone now). My first excursion was at 19, put my Honda 90 on the train from Kings X to Perth and went over the Devils Elbow.. It fell down the whole way, thick mist and the bloody sheep were everywhere. Got to my Aunts and the dye had washed out of my leather jacket. I was blue. The family were in fits (Wild manny fae off the hill, a blue). Going back was actually worse, so your video brings it all back. Superbly shot, I can barely watch.. I live in Canada and if I can get my bike over I have to go home. Gu fortanach dha na h-uile. Gum beannaicheadh Dia Alba
The view down to the sea Loch reminds when Frodo leaves Middle Earth on the ship.❤.Thanks Freddie.
oh the memories! rode it many years ago on XT500, with clothes in rucksac on my back. Also took in outer hebrides as well.

Brilliant Freddie BUT…..imagine being over 20 stone, 70 years old and doing this Pass on a 35 year old 100cc 2-stroke !! Worried me that I wouldn’t make it but the little YB100 didn’t miss a beat!
Finally getting to see this one... Thank you Freddie.
Another great video Freddie, had to hold my breath for a moment at about 7.20 on the timeline when the rider had left their sidestand down whilst curving around the twisties but it flicked up with no problem 😮
Freddie, I just want to say that your video production is beyond brilliant. I watch a few bike You Tubers including Itchy Boots and from what I've seen your production is top of the tree. I just love watching your videos, you just seem to have a talent to capture the absolute essence of everything. Just brilliant. 😀

The local RE dealers old wooden floor was always awash with oil. Worst British bike of the 60's.
My Himalayan hasn't used a drop of oil and now has almost 16K miles on the clock. Having said that I rarely ride the bike above 60mph. Great series of videos Freddie, I rode some of those roads in recent years
What an amazing visual feast! You have a good eye Freddie!
The weather adds to the drama. Good job filming in spite of the adverse conditions. Hats off! Keep it up.
Scotland, and NI were exactly like this when we went to the NW200 in May last year. I went to the races with some mates then did a ride around NW Scotland afterwards - it was diabolical weather. So bad in fact that I cut the ride short and fled south to my mates place for the rest of my trip over (I live in Australia). The weather is SUCH a crying shame because the countryside is just fabulous for bikes.
Nice Freddie, nice!
I’m 75, a Canadian and have been to Scotland 3 times beginning in 1997. The scenery is beyond spectacular. The highlands are magnificent but so is the rest of the country and I’ve done much of it. We drove the Applecross Road (Bealach Na Ba) in ‘99 in bright sunshine, as luck would have it, and it was stunning. Would have loved to have done it on my ‘01 GL1800 or my ‘07 Triumph Tiger Triple. If you’re heading to Scotland, don’t miss this road! You’ll never forget the experience.
To quote Jeremy Clarkson "Scotland is europes greatest race track". Fantastic trip Freddie, loving this adventure
I love my country and as a Scot I spend as much time as I can out riding. Scotland is made for motorcycling and you don't need to go to Skye and the north west. The whole of Scotland is spectacular. I suppose that is why we have so many bikers coming over from mainland Europe.
Look what a youtube channel i've found! The atmosphere, the music, the filming.. Perfect, enjoyed this one! You've got a new subscriber
fabulous
Thank you Freddy. Beautifully crafted mate - from a Bonny (riding) Kiwi lad, with links to Clan McLeod, Isle of Skye.
7:21 feared the worst when i seen that side stand down, every bike needs a sidestand kill switch! B Amazing video as always though Freddie!

Thank you @@FreddieDobbs for bringing back memories! I will have to come back and brave again the trillions of midgets on the camping ground right above Applecross village!
Half a litre of oil in 500 miles! That's much worse than my 1960 British bike😂 Great ride through some beautiful scenery, cheers.
Glorious! ❤😍
Adventure lights the soul ❤
I enjoyed the all too brief shot of the Alliss-Chalmers tractor in their classic Persian Orange 🇬🇧
I want the "So Glorious" t shirt Freddie 😂 ✌
That was a was a wonderful trip. As a teenager in the mid 1960's I did a spell at an adventure school in Applecross and I will always remember the trip over top. There was no coast road way back then so you could either get into or out of Applecross over the top or by sea. I always wanted to go back and cycle that road but never got around to it so thanks for the journey.
The long wheel base Land-rover with the pizza oven made me smile 😊 I expect your Bonneville would have liked that journey…
Loch Marie in the background from where you parked at the top. Been there numerous times, wonderful ! Carry on down that road past Ben Eighe.
SPECTACULAR

These episodes have been one of your finest.
Epic footage!
What a brilliant vid Freddie. Thanks. Ride safe everyone and ❤ from NZ. I have been lucky enough to ride through Scotland many moons ago, and it is as stunning now, as it was then.
Fantastic thanks!
Hi Freddie, Just watched your latest video and I was overjoyed to see you passed through my village of shieldaig! I have been following you for a while and if I had known I would have made you all a mug of coffee..keep up the great content you share. Cheers
Wow! You got the holy trinity! Beautiful scenery, a Defender and some motorcycles in one shot! Good work Sir👍
Spectacular, the deer... wonderful really good. Thanks Freddie.
Loved the Gentleman with the “garbage bag inner liner” 🤣. Reminded me of a time I was working overseas and during a very big concrete pour, a cold front with strong wind and some rain (enough to keep you wet and shivering) came through hours before it was forecast. To keep everyone “dry” and working to finish the pour, I bought a big roll of garbage bags and we all wore one. The Management crew thought it was hilarious but the workers wore them happily and even brought them to work the next day (I keep a couple rolled up in my Himalayan’s panniers “just in case” - they take up no room and are very effective at keeping your “core” dry). Love this tour - I spent a week touring Scotland in an open TR2 back in the 70’s. Stunning, rugged and beautiful country - much like the tough and resilient people it has bred.
Really enjoying this Freddie, thanks for making the effort to film and share it with us, no mean feat that's for sure. Cheers!
If the weather doesn't ruin your tour, everything's else must be great. Fortunately, Scotland has everything else and does it better than most. Great footage. Really enjoyed this one. Safe, happy travels 👍
Stunning Freddie, thank you for that.

Ahhhh I know!
Just had a quick view before work. Will catch the full episode this evening. Great production by the way. A quick observation. At 7’19” into the production I believe the last rider has their side stand down. With the grace of good fortune, the stand flicks up into place on the slight left bend rather than throws the rider. Lucky rider.
Positively epic, Freddy! Thanks for taking us along!
Beautiful....
Definitely a bucket list item!! Scotland is unique in many ways. The people are special in my mind. Gosh, I'd even pray for a Scottish girlfriend!
I did Applecross pass in April. My weather was better, yet Imstill had cloud at the top. Probably had a better view on the way down the North side than you would have.
Scottish biker here, gloves tip for the rain,i use padded cycling gloves, covered by rubber large, black marigolds .dry hands for safety, and they dont take up much room.

Not surprised you got soaked through; looked as though you were dressed for a walk to your local coffee bar!! Might be an idea to invest in some 100% waterproof gear eh?
Even when it rains Scotland is beautiful!
I just did the applecross pass on my route from the nc500 into Skye! It was a great ride! I had changeable weather, but generally it was really good! One thing I would say, for touring get some goretex pro kit (e.g. rukka) and you can ride through anything without even feeling it...
Im lucky enough to have Scottish in laws and have toured round Scotland many times. I've done the Applecross pass 4 times only ever managed to actually see the view once due to the weather.
The rain looked rally bad alright?? But that makes the journey even more rememberable. Low clouds - bikes in the mist.
Refreshing presentation & breathtaking beauty...
Simply wonderful Freddie !
Thank you for persevering through the weather to give us this stunning series of videos so the rest of us can enjoy them while we relax in the comfort of our homes. Aint life great?

That's fairly typical weather for Scotland tbf, treat the rain as normal and the dry days as a bonus

Using oil is not a quirk, it's a sign of a bad engine. Went over Applecross Pass last month, beautiful weather when we were there.
Superb episode. Fabulous. Keep em coming Freddie, keep em coming.
Truly amazing content ❤ amazing scenery indeed
Another great film Freddie...can't wait for the next......
what a beautiful journey!
I must have been just unlucky I guess. Went for a weeks bike tour of Scotland in 2015, the weather was awful every day and most of the people I meet were grumpy or just plain rude. Glade to get out of the place to be honest !
I have no idea how you stayed so positive through all that rain! Another fantastic video Freddie keep up the good work!
Nailed the video again Freddie, well done
Wow what a place to ride , great video Freddie thankyou

That’s really kind of you to say so, thank you Joshua🙂🙌🏻
i was lucky enough to do the pass end may about 8am in brilliant sunshine without having many of the dreaded campervans on the road as part of the nc500. it's certainly a lovely biking road and i didn't watch any vids beforehand as i didnt wanna spoil the surprise, but was still a little worried it might have been a bit awkward in places, but not a bit of it, and the western part of the nc500 is by far the best of the route. GL and thanks for the vid
Nicely done Freddie; very watchable and inspiring
Superb 👌👌👌
Stunning as ever! And just one of the many reasons I live in Scotland.
Please will someone in TV give Freddie and Monica a sponsored free rein to make a series about anything!!! It knocks tv series off the park. Thanks both. Also Fred it’s not unusual for new (older) type engines to burn oil as the tolerances are much bigger than ultra modern engines. As the rings and bores bed in likely oil consumption reduce or eliminated
I seem to remember telling you to come to Scotland a while back..I knew you would love it!! There's nowhere like it, even when the weather is shit it's still awesome 😅😅

When the weather is sh**? 😂😂
I thought you might have included more footage of the Applecross Pass, in particular the two switchbacks. I was riding over it once when I had to give way to a coach coming towards me, I didn’t think vehicles of that size were permitted on it and I’ve no idea how it got round the two hairpin bends. 👍
almost a replay of our bike trip around Tasmania .... especially the weather !⛈🌦☔
Beauty certainly lies in the eye of the beholder, but there´s no denying the grass cannot be much greener somewhere else.
Well.. I've been away so long that I actually got a lump in my throat at 8mins 30secs. I sat in that very spot one day for over an hour.. maybe half a dozen cars passed.. it is truly God's country. Glad your enjoying it Freddie. 😊
