Wild Boars - the Sacred Animals of War, Fertility and Hunting in Celtic Mythology
Wild boars were among the most revered animals in the culture and religion of the Celts in Britain, Ireland and Europe. The druids believed the strength, fierceness and fertility of wild boars were omens of their mystical connection to the deities in the Otherworld.
Moccus and Baco were prominent boar gods in Gaul during the Iron Age and Gallo-Roman era. The Romans paired Moccus with Mercury, the Roman god of trade, travellers and the Underworld.
