CLIP DESCRIPTION:
After a shootout, WIld Bill (Jeff Bridges) shows mercy to Jack McCall (David Arquette) and lets him go free.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Maverick writer-director Walter Hill's version of the famous Wild Bill Hickok legend is a dreamscape western that is told entirely in flashback. Hickok's friend Charley Prince (John Hurt) narrates the events of Wild Bill's life while sitting at Bill's graveside. Hickok is played by Jeff Bridges as a mean, high-spirited, but gallant outlaw. He wanders the West, adding to his reputation with some well-chosen gunfights, and he meets up with characters such as Calamity Jane (Ellen Barkin), who becomes his sidekick for a time. After becoming a legend, Hickok signs up for a stint with Buffalo Bill Cody's traveling variety show. Eventually, he falls in love with Susannah Moore (Diane Lane), and his love leads him to tragedy in the town of Deadwood, SD.

Wild Bill was truly a legend in his own time. I heard a story that on one day while riding to, I believe it was Deadwood, where he would later meet his end, he crossed paths with a young boy and asked for directions. Well, that young boy, name of Bill Tilghman, was so amazed to have met Hickok, that he would grow up and become a famous gunfighter, politician and Marshal, and would go onto serve in Kansas, Oklahoma, and as Marshal in Dodge city in the early 1880s. The point: Never underestimate the influence you can have in people's lives. Whether it's good, or bad, is entirely up to you, and what you choose to do.

Yes, Jeff Bridges was excellent as Wild Bill. The most believable performance I have seen portraying Wild Bill. Unfortunately, the inaccuracies, poor direction, and poor writing completely buried Jeff Bridges's performance in the movie. It was an awful movie, especially the last 45 minutes related to his assassination. What was the director thinking?!?

Crappy shot counting aside, I love how merciful Bill is with Jack. He could have justifiably killed him 3-4 times I think, but let him go each time. Jack was just a dumb kid playing at being a cowboy/gunfighter. More than that though, Jack also couldn't bring himself to kill Bill when he had the chance, telling Bill once and for all that the kid wasn't a real threat. Bill ten takes that mercy two steps further, not only letting Jack have a drink before he leaves, but offering to pay for it! Then while we're at it, lets take one more step and turn our back to the kid as we head to the bar, showing a level of trust he definitely wouldn't have shown to any of the other men in the barn, if they had lived.

In his early years, Hickock carried a large knife in his belt, not pistols. He sometimes carried a shotgun but only started to carry and use handguns when local toughs began to make fun of how he dressed and mocked him because of his somewhat large nose. They began to call him "Duck Bill Hickock" This upset Bill, and it is not clear just what happened but he was never mocked like that again. Afterwards, he became Wild Bill.

At least 15 shot pistols! Horrible directing!! Another mistake, Hickok was born in Illinois, and raised in the Northern part of the Country, yet in this movie he speaks with a strong Southern accent! Totally bad directing. Jeff Bridges played the part well, but was directed to play this part by idiots! Kind of reminds me of Sam Elliot playing a Union General in Gettysburg with an extremely strong Southern drawl!! They should have made him play a Confederate General in that it would be realistic! I think today’s producers don’t know their history! Doesn’t surprise me with the total lack of quality education in this Country!! Many teachers from certain races did not even pass the teachers exam, yet they hire them anyway!! Sad!!!

Agree with most of this with the exception of Sam Elliot. He played John Buford in that movie who was from Kentucky which at the time was still considered a southern state and even today I know people from Kentucky who have a slight southern accent.
