Alvin’s place is right next to my grandparents cabin, lovely place to spend some time fly fishing or fishin for trout. Alvin is buddies with my pop Basil Gillingham, he’s spent his whole life up that river whether he was polling up or using a engine.

I want to add; Newfoundland is the nicest place on earth. The dialect is old English so listen carefully and speak respectfully.

I noticed Mark "bowed" a little when the salmon jumped. I have not seen anyone mention that in all the many videos I watch. Years ago I fished with Stu Apt (at the time he held the world record tarpon on a fly rod). He said you always bow when the tarpon jumps. ?????

I do tend to bow when fishing salmon and steelhead... habit formed too by fishing tarpon. M

What's philosophy behind no landing net? Thanks

  • @newflyfisher

Great Question WildBlue Discovery, As long as the fish are looked after properly, we generally adapt our fishing/handling/landing and releasing to regional guides. 99.9% of the guides we use are very conservation minded and many have their own philosophies on fish handling. The Gillinghams don't use nets and prefer to hand grab (no glove) the fish, remove hooks immediately and return the fish. I asked the same question to be honest! Thanks and I appreciate your question! Mark
