WIKITONGUES: António speaking Kimbundu

This video is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International license. To download a copy, please contact hello@wikitongues.org.
This video was recorded by Stéfane Helder in Luanda Province, Angola, where António lives and works. The Kimbundu language is spoken by as many as four million people, primarily in the Luanda, Bengo, and Malanje provinces of the southern African nation of Angola. It is one of the country’s most widely spoken Bantu languages, having contributed significantly to the vocabulary of both Angolan and Brazilian Portuguese. Though Portuguese is Angola’s sole language of administration, Kimbundu is a recognized ‘national language’ alongside Kikongo, Chokwe, Umbundu, Nganguela and Kwanyama.

I have always wondered what this language sounded like. It is amazing to me to think how many people are walking around today in the Americas for whom this is an ancestor language and they are entirely unaware of the fact. So so many people who spoke this language were taken across the ocean that in Brazil, for instance, it was actually widely spoken for a while.

He is a Mbundu which is the same as Maputu or Mpondo which the Xhosa come from. Xhosa people actually come from the Nzuza Zulu people who call themselvws Ndebele or Muthwa or Motswa or Zwangu or Zwana or Msane. The 2 Kimbundu tribes moved to Mozambique then South Africa as Matamba (Ndaba or Ndobe or Dube or Hlubi or Wombe or Jobe) and Ndongo (what we call Mtolo or Tholo or Godo or Nquthu or Shabalala or Xaba-Lala or Bukalanga). In South East Africa, they are called Mbuduma, as we are in Sudan and it is also called Manala Ndebele/Mandebele. Ndebele means Zulu. Often reduced to Kgotso. Pula. NALA. for Sotho-speaking Zulus in Lesotho. All three are Mandebele or Zulu tribes. Kgotso means peace = Thula = Thwa = Ndzudza/Nzuza = Ngozo/Zongo/Basongo/Mkhize/KaMkhize/Ngwaketse/Mkhwanazi/Van'wanati. The Pula is what Fulani call themselves, we say Mvulane or Faku or Mfengu or Fenkhu or Bhengu or Ncube or Ngobe or Chopi or Jobe or Wombe which is the Ndlovu or Tlou or Lunda or Elephant tribe from which came all the ruling houses of African tribes. We are also called Mbuthu or Mphotho or Mabutho (this means military battalions). We come from the army tribes. Our King in South Africa is said to be a descendent of King Mpande of the Zulus. This is the same Mbande who Queen Njinga is from. And Njinga we call Nsika or Mantshinga or Jali or Tyali or Mtshali or Shezi or Jesi or Njazi or Shai or Isaka or Ishaka or Moshoeshoe or Litsha Ndebele or Ditshaba who make up Lesotho Ndebele or Khayelitsha in Cape Town. My point is, we moved from Angola or Babanango or Ngcwangu or Kwago or Cwago or Camagu or Nako or Sikhathi or Sgadi or Sayidi or Sared or Sayed or Motsoaledi or Sandile or Jadiel or Nyandeni kaZebulun. Correction: Godo = Kimbudu = sons of princes of MaMbundu. Looking up Mpondo and Mpondomise lineages will shed light on similarities. How we all fit together is all in Zululand.
