HARD disagree with Half-Life 2. Half-Life 1 has more enemies, better movement, more guns, more gameplay variety, etc. Half-Life 2 has a better engine, that was the focus. I feel like Half-Life 1 is a much better game.

@@SGSOnlineTV I'd beg to differ on the mass effect 2 part. the heavy employment of rpg elements in the first game was almost soviet concrete in the game. the sequel was extremely more combat and FPS intensive. just a subjective disagreement but I really found myself disdaining mass effect 2 when I carefully construct a squad that should take on any threat but can't because of the annoying cooldown system and the ridiculousness of shield or barrier capacities. the first game I could disable a biotic using enemy completely by using: sabotage (no more weapons), dampening (no more biotics), and then hit'em with either a neural shock, overload, or a biotic attack and suddenly they're completely helpless against my attacks. in mass effect 2: I can hit'em with 3 overloads and they will often times charge straight through and turn me into soylent green before I can snap my keyboard; also yes I tried doing an adept playthrough with warp and singularity (only works when you can finally dampen the disagreeable cooldowns), hell even in mass effect 3 I found too much issue with that damn cooldown system. sure the first game was arguably broken with triple-lifting enemies till they hit the death panel but it sure was a lot more tactical when facing my opponents in a fairly level playing field (sabotage and overload or ai hacking to stop the rocket drones is a must!)

I think the old west/feudal japan aesthetic works because both cultures, (or rather, both media depictions of these cultures) lend themselves to the same type of story well. Both were settings marked by constant violence and lawlessness where stories centering around wandering heroes are prevalent. Case in point; When making Seven Samurai, widely considered to be the most influential Samurai movie ever, Director Akira Kurosawa said the goal was to make a western set in Japan. Obviously the setting didn't allow for cowboys or anything literally belonging to westerns, but the story used the same types of concepts the genre was known for. Then, sure enough Seven Samurai was remade several years later in America as a western , i.e The Magnificent Seven, and it became one of the pinnacles of its own genre. Our collective understanding of the two settings, no matter how flawed, enables a lot of overlap. Merging the two doesn't immediately make sense, but in practice it worked pretty seamlessly because our expectations for each were so similar.

I imagine that the Ubisoft Paris team that designed the first Red Steel, wanted to take another shot at realizing their initial vision. Utilize the novel premise of motion controls for a game that featured both gunplay and swordplay. Red Steel 2 isn't so much a sequel to the first game as it is a reimagining from both a design and narrative based perspective.

The composite techno-retro setting of both the American wild west and Japan's Edo period is an idea that allows for limitless creative freedom. In film the romanticisation of the lone wanderer is prevalent in both American and Japanese cinema. The gunslinger and the ronin, presented in this game as Swordslingers. Without emphasizing it Red Steel 2's narrative is very similar to both works by Sergio Leone and Akira Kurosawa. In that estranged individuals find themselves seeking revenge and take up the mantle of the towns hero and savior in their quest.

I'd like to recommend that you play The Citadel. It's my favorite FPS, and has been very inspirational to me. I think that it's the best example of controlling the scope of a project I've seen. It manages to effectively convey an atmosphere while using extremely simple level detailing- it uses around six or seven textures for the level geometry, but still manages to convey an oppressive atmosphere through good audio and enemy design. On my later playthroughs, I learned to appreciate all of the weapons in the game. Each of them is well animated and satisfying to use, and each of them fills a specific role, while still having enough overlap to not feel overly restrictive. The game also does very little to restrict what the player can do- one time when I was messing around I was crouching, jumping, shooting, using an alt-fire, aiming down sights, cooking a grenade, running, and kicking at the same time. Oh, also content warnings: this game is inspired by retro fps's, so it's very violent, and the guy that made it is Japanese, so it has an anime art style. Some people find that disturbing. Also there is some nudity near the end.

during the boshin war period, the emperor of japan rose up against the shogunate for opening the borders of japan after being threatened by the united states. In the boshin war, japan had to quickly adapt from feudalism to modern (for the time) gun-based warfare. It was quite literally samurai vs dudes with guns. Britain and hte united states aided the empire of japan while france aided the shogunate. This time period saw rapid industrialization and westernization of japan, where feudal japanese culture was blendid with mid-19th century western culture. I think this might have been the basis of the "cowboys + samurai" concept the game was going for.

This game did everything right IMO, and I never even heard about it until 2 weeks ago. Such a shame it didn't sell well... I will say, I did buy this game specifically because we just found a cheap Wii and I explicitly wanted sword fighting games, so the core of the game is what drew me in, as opposed to you who was drawn in for the shooting only to be bait and switched. Wii motion controls are far from perfect even in their best forms but this game felt pretty okay the entire way through. I mean VR is better in every conceivable way, but for the time, this game did everything in it's power to make up for the first game's failings. I really hope and pray for a VR sequel, or a VR port would be cool too. The ONLY major complaint I have about this game is that there's no endless arena mode. Apparently the developers were making one in the form of Challenge Mode, but ran out of time when it didn't work right and cut it down to become a replay mission button with a score target. God what I would give to get an endless arena mode. Guess I'll just die intentionally to the last enemy of a fun area instead. PS: Based Nintendo rant

If they were to ever make a Red Steel 3 or even an entire series, I'd say that they take the Quake route by having the rest of the series focus on 2's story and universe and completely ditch the first game's story (update: while typing this, I just found out that the timelines of Quake are a bit more complicated and don't just simply ditch the first game's story. I only got this wrong information from a year or more ago when I skimmed and briefly looked at the Quake wiki because I was obsessed with Doom at the time). Red Steel 2 has a legitimate identity and a unique and fun concept of combining samurai and the old west. Plus, since the devs cared more about motion controllers being one of its main draws, they now have the opportunity to focus on the VR market. Update: He already talked about VR at the end.

The only issue I ever really had with Red Steel 2 was that there was no New Game+ mode. If you wanted all the upgrades, you had to get them during that play through if you didn't want to start a new game with nothing. This was especially frustrating since the final shop you could buy upgrades at was at the 2/3 mark of the game (that abandoned mine in the canyon level), but the game would keep giving you money throughout the final two levels even though you couldn't spend any of it at that point. If it ever gets an HD rerelease, Ubisofts better add the option to start a new game with all your upgrade you acquired from your previous play through.

Samurai and Wild West aesthetics look good together because they are cinematic languages that borrowed from each other immensely. A Fistful of Dollars is famously a retelling of Yojimbo in a Spaghetti Western setting. Old Hollywood 'John Wayne' westerns might not be part of that, but the Spaghetti Western is a mishmash of US olf westerns, Japanese cinematic style, and post-wwII Italian social commentary. It works so well, because even if you can't name names, pop-culture has made it FEEL familiar.

As someone who gives this game mad praise, I agree regarding the game feeling monotonous at times. I also agree that the game is mostly easy, however I do think the few boss fights in the game make up for that.

Great video with good points. I still remember this game as one of my favorites ever when it came out... I still rate it highly because of the Nostalgia but it was definitely something greater and revolutionary when it was released but is now just a pretty and solid game. Also.. after playing it for a while I was sword swinging in my sleep so my then girlfriend has a lesser opinion of the game .

I actually enjoyed skyward sword on the Wii but Red Steel 2s controls & combat felt so intuitive & great. I also found when I was a kid that controllers with the Wii motion plus already built in always worked better than the attachment with the remote. With the built in it worked like 97% of the time. With the the attachment I found like a good 10%-15% of the time depending on the game recalibrating the controller & it was annoying having to take it out of the little condom wrap for the remote just to hit that red button on the back. Wasn't game breaking but definitely was annoying when I replayed some Wii games on my Wii u when I only had the attachment motion plus & not the built in remotes anymore. Good games wish they got more of a shine but it came out at a weird timing for the Wii.

I used to have a lot of fun with this game back in the day. I never played Red Steel 1 and so back then I felt like I was missing out by playing the sequel before the original. Turns out, the two games don't have much in common with each other. The sequel is the only game I ever think of when I hear the words "Red Steel".

Red Steel 2 maybe be aged now but imho it's got one of the most underrated setting in a video game and i am yet to see another game that shares similar setting. Like...a Merged Universe between two of my Favorite tropes i.e Feudal Industrial Japan and Wild west and You get to play as a Badass Samurai Cowboy with Katana and Revolver,What's not to love ?It's a shame the game is aged. I hope we get to a sequel to this game and yes VR would do wonders to this title.

There's a lot of thematic overlap between Feudal Japan and the Western genre. Blending those is the bulk of Kurosawa's filmography. It's not something we see a lot of, but it does track better than one might expect.

Most of the samurai films from which we learned about japan were inspired by American Westerns so this whole premise is more of a serious connection to that
