Thanks for this, I used to watch the trains between Pemberton and Orrell when I was a kid, huge long goods trains that would have taken the Wigan Wallgate avoiding line and rejoined the main line at Hindley North, :-)

That avoiding line has gone for good.

That is one long block section to Rainsford. I suppose no point in putting in Intermediate Block signals because of the single line to the stub terminus. Although I see the rails do run through under the rubbish.

Very interesting to see that journey from the cab, made it many times as a passenger. Really wish Northern would sort out their announcements though, that destination is pronounced "Kerr-bee", not as the spelling suggests " Kerk-bee". They don't pronounce Huyton as "Hooyeeton" so why they can't be bothered to get it right here I don't know.

Anyone know why the section of line from Rainford to Kirkby is single-track when the rest of the line is double-track?

On the 'token' section of single-track just before Kirkby, at 19.08, a set of points appears, leading to what looks like an industrial siding with a gate. How would access to/from this bit of track be controlled in the apparent absence of any signalling ? On other parts of the line there are 'painted' 'distant' semaphore-arms on boards: how would these be seen at night, assuming that they have to be looked out for as would 'true' signals of any type ?

The Token is also a key to operate the points locally. As for the painted Distant, this has a magnet which give you a warning sound
