Wig-Wag Steam Engine Build Series Part 5 - Piston, Cylinder Cap & Crank Connector

Ғылым және технология

Part 5 of the Wig-Wag steam engine build series - Join me as I build the original Wig-Wag engine in a step-by-step process to make this simple single acting wobbler engine

About Me...
I started model engineering and building model stationary steam engines in 2015, after constructing a small engineering workshop in my back yard, I use a Myford ML7 hobby lathe, a Dore Westbury milling machine, along with a pillar drill, band-saw and the usual hand-tools associated with hobby engineering and enjoy making model engines and general tool-making and metalworking. Nearly all of my engines are scratch-built without drawings, from available bar-stock, starting from an initial idea and allowing the design to evolve throughout the build process. I do occasionally use drawings from the web, as a basis for a design, and then modify it to suit my needs, using mostly metric dimensions, but often mix metric and imperial. I spend countless hours in my workshop working on a single engine, and much frustration can be involved, but all this is eventually offset by the pleasure and excitement of seeing my model engines take shape and eventually come to life. My shed is also my sanctuary, somewhere I can go and forget about the worries of everyday life, to occupy my mind and hands with something creative and fulfilling, where I am free from distraction and interruption. Ade

    I love your method of honing the cylinder! I wish I had seen it sooner. I'll certainly be using it for future cylinder work. Thx Ade!

    I only found your channel about a week and a half ago and watched the older WigWag videos. And then you started doing this build series. You've got a new subscriber and I'd like to compliment you on some very nicely made videos. You explain things well and the pacing is very nice. Not too fast and not too much "filler" that becomes boring. Very nicely done indeed. I've got a couple of other projects to finish off first but hope to start my own WigWag soon as a good learning experience towards other engine type projects.

    Great video Ade. I've started this build just using my lathe. As suggested I've been using my lathe to do milling operations and have been very successful. Thank you also for the tips you showed in this video, I really enjoy watch your video's. You have clear instructions that are easy to follow for a novice such as myself. Keep up the good work. Regards from Ben in Australia.

    Hi Ben, good to hear from you! Great to hear that you are building the Wig-Wag engine, I love to hear from folk around the world who are having a go at building this, I hope my vids help you in your build, be sure to join the Wig-Wag facebook group and share your build with us :) Kindest Regards. Ade

    Hi Craig, it ideally wants to be made as close to the bore diameter from the outset, so the expansion required is minimal

    Hi Ade. Would you consider a build series with a steam engine in the future? Even better an engine that combines electricity as well? Nick from Greece.

    If you would have used an O ring for a piston ring on the first attempt in making the piston, would that have caused too much resistance and therefore affecting performance?

  • @AdeSwash

    @AdeSwash

    Hi Robert, I have used O-rings on some of my bigger engines, such as my Big-Beam which is a powerful engine, but I think it may be too much resistance on a small single acting engine such as this, but I havent tried it, so cant be sure. Regards. Ade

    Hi Mike, press fit is good, the cylinder is too small for screws
