easy. it's because Marco was the man she really wanted but because he wasn't a stable option, she settled for OP who not only had income but also had his life planned out and she knew he would provide her with a stable lifestyle. OP heard how close minded her parents was but upon meeting them, realized it was a lie and he should have questioned her about her "brother"

Though I'm by no means an expert, this kind of thing makes me think of hoe_math's various notes. Potentially: Marco was higher on the "bad boy" slider whereas OP was higher on the "good guy" slider, and not much on the "bad". Thus: Rene liked OP's investment in her but wasn't necessarily attracted to him, meanwhile being attracted to Marco. It sounds like she was "Alpha widowed". (Though not a fan of red pill in general, some terms are useful for conveying ideas). She saw Marco as more appealing and, having been with him prior, never got over him. Ultimately, it's a matter of maturity. She wasn’t mature, letting her emotions rule her rather than ruling her emotions.

Believe it or not it happened to a cousin of mine.

Renee has a hero complex/savior complex, I've known men/women who really enjoyed relationship where one of them does everything while the other destroyed themselves. I'm not sure why, but Renee needs therapy. Marco doesn't benefit her in anyway at all. Why does she want a bum? While she herself is smart? Sometimes in relationships nobody gotta be a hero. You're a hero to yourself. That's it.

My mom also have this too. For example: My stepdad rented a room for a guy with bipolar who was a real asshole. My mom hearing about him and his life wanted to help him and bring him to Christ and this other bullshit. He continues to be a asshole as he didn't take his meds, take our food and eat it, and does other stupid shit. She just defended him and make excuses for him. Even after he was removed from our home after he caused a incident, she yelled at all of us for not helping that prick. It took 3 years later with me moving out that she finally apologized and admitted that she was a sucker for him. Even now, she continues to have this and makes excuses for people who are pricks.

Well, she did actively choose to get married to someone else and then cheated on OP with him. I don’t feel too bad for her if at all. She definitely needed therapy to cope with her issues, she definitely has some sort of savior complex.
