You could use water bottles or really anything to have separation from the soil. It used to create a pocket or reservoir of water. Naturally the water come up through the dirt when the sun is out along with the air gap that is created at the 5" mark. It pulls the water up to the roots. Pretty cool set up. I learned this from gardening with Leon on youtube years ago.
