Great vid Aaron. My first sharpener was the accusharp. I destroyed so many blades with that thing. Then I got the sharp maker and could never get it right. Then I got a used WEPS and have never looked back. That plus a manual strop and I'm golden. Love it.

The Wicked Edge, I use a piece of the checkered sticky drawer liner to sandwich the blade in the vice, it holds my spydercos really well.

Just for reference, I made a slug of aluminum blanks for my Edge Pro. Some of them have inexpensive after market water stones, some have leather and chromium oxide or other polish, and a few have Harbor Freight diamond stones glued to them. Look up, on line, how adding a drill bit collar (replace the screw with a thumb screw or knob) can allow you to use any thickness of different stones without altering the degree of approach. ___________________________ NOTE: You can cut thin aluminum on a table saw with ease. Just use the right blade and good face and eye protection. Put a bit of canning wax on the cut line to smooth and cool the cutting operation AND use push blocks.

Not yet, I know I gotta pick those up soon, but I am more than happy with my results with the medium and fine stones. And Im playing around with laying something on the stones like paper, and using flitz to refine the edge a bit.

I appreciate the video, and of course I'm 3 years late finding it. I haven't bought any system yet, been doing it by hand with a few different stones with my favorite being the Arkansas stones. But when I do get around to buying a system, it will definitely be the KME. For what your getting & the quality of every component, I truly believe the KME is the very best value all around, especially when considering the cost. If I'm gonna invest a lot of money in a sharpening system, I feel it shouldn't leave the user faced with such margins for error. Maybe not so much for the Wicked Edge, but The Edge Pro involves too much work & concentration, heck, I would just as soon continue honing by hand. So the KME will be my choice. Thanks for the video, I really enjoyed it, and very informative.

I have the edge pro and although the WE seems like a great system I have no regrets. My learning curve on the EP was very quick. I knew that I had to make sure I didn't roll the blade while sharpening and it wasn't hard to handle. For the money, I prefer the EP vs. the WE. That's just my opinion. You can't go wrong with either.

Yep, it's all preference and accessibility. They're both equally good systems in their own right. Like I mentioned the WE system is significantly more expensive than the EP, if you can afford the EP you'll be happy with it I'm sure. Same goes for the Wicked Edge, or even the Sharpmaker for that matter.

  • @phoenixpeppers

Diamond stones don't last forever they wear out too just don't need to be leveled and you can get those for edge pro too. Btw just wondering, how do you do a long knife on a WE? And also you use a magnet on edge pro that pretty much keeps your blade still

From some studying, I found out that diamond stones should only be used on ceramics. Even though some steels are extremely hard, they're still to soft to use diamond stones. What happens is the diamonds start sticking to the steel when sharpening and come out. Diamonds should only be used when sharpening ceramics or leveling out your stones. If it matters, so it doesn't seem like I saw some vid and passing the info out as my own, I've worked my whole life in the metal fabrication industry as a welder and machinist. And from my own experience, this info is mostly true, there are circumstances where diamonds should be used on different types of steels, but it's on metals that are not normally used in knife blades.

That's funny, because he's correct. Diamond stones are not solid diamond, they're diamond impregnated. You can think of it like little bits of diamond are glued to the stone (or held together by the "stone" material). Because diamond is so much harder than steel, the diamond pieces sink into the steel and when that happens to a sufficient depth, the steel surrounding the diamond bits will apply enough resistance to rip them from the stone. If you've ever used diamond stones on steel knives, you know that the stones wear out (they don't really physically wear much because the diamond that is not exposed is still there, it's just not functional) rather quickly despite removing a ton of material. That's why. That's not a guess, that is directly from the mouth of a mechanical engineer (develops machinery for Johnson and Johnson) who holds a masters degree in materials science and is probably the smartest man I've ever met. We had that conversation almost 20 years ago, and he showed me using a microscope that the diamond material comes off of a DMT stone with alarming speed when run over 1095 carbon steel, because I didn't believe it either. Diamond stones work great on ceramics, and will last a long time. They also work decently on certain very hard steels like Elmax (60-61 HRC or better). If you run a sharpening service and you DON'T know this, I'd say you need to do some research.

hate to say it guys, but most if not all diamond sharpening stones are not ACTUAL diamonds. there is monocrystalline and polycrystalline, to put it simply, a monocrystalline should not break down. also, the results of a sharp and performing knife can't be argued. if something works for someone, let them be. the only exception in my opinion is carbide, that's a real blade ruiner.

  • @TorlingJarl

Ok, another thing now that I am quite educated on sharpening rather than new to sharpening like I was in the previous comment. Diamonds should not be glued to a surface, they should be bonded to the steel on the stone. That's what makes a high quality stone. KME for example. And again if something works for someone, let them be. I use diamonds with my KME and get good cutting and hair whittling edges at 600 grit. So that fact, true or not. Doesn't matter.

I have been going back and forth on which system to buy for a week now. I want to be able to put a nice edge on my edc knives. I dig the wicked edge system but just think it is way over priced... I want to love the edge pro system. the owner Ben seems like a good dude and the price is a little more reasonable. But dang that wicked edge system just keeps pulling me in. I want to hate it, I want to go to the hardware store and build one lol. Some rc truck tie rods and a lansky sharpening system... Bottom line, any doubts I had about the wicked edge system are gone after watching these videos from guys like you that have actually owned and used both systems. Thanks for taking the time to make the videos. I'm gonna pull the trigger and grab a wicked edge system.

Thanks. I have a Edge PRo that I have used for several years. I have not used a Wicked Edge. Yes, the rocking of the blade can be a problem on smaller knives with an Edge Pro. If you are sharpening a knife or two, the Edge Pro is a great system for the money. However, it becomes very slow if you have to do a bunch of knives. You put in the coarsest stone you want to use, then sharpen all the knives at once (assuming the same angle), they you clean that stone, and insert the next finer stone and repeat. It can easily take a hours to do a bunch of stones. BUT (and there is always a but) from what I have seen, the Wicked Edge system has limitations on very small knives, whereas the Edge Pro does not. In fact that's it greatest strength-it can handle all sizes and shapes better than almost anything else, even recurve blades. From what I have seen, the Wicked Edge is a faster system to use, with more than one or two knives, and typical sized knives. The one thing I would NOT buy is one of the new Chinese copies of the Edge Pro that are currently floating around-Another Chinese rip off.

Stones are supposed to be consumable, just like the Japanese stones the pros have been using for hundreds of years. Korin knives in NYC has a youtube channel and they show you how to sharpen your knives taught by a apprentice of a master trained in japan. They teach to develop one side then the other. I personally think if a technique that has been used for so long is still being used today by the masters, why change it

I ended up getting the wicked edge. Its cool i can put a pretty good edge on a knife with it. But im thinking about ordering the edge pro. After owning the wicked edge now im thinking the edge pro would probably put an edge on a knife faster. I could be wrong, time will tell. I wont discard my wicked edge until i give the edge pro a shot.

+Andris Kompelien I've got the wicked edge and like it. It took upgrading all the hardware to make it great. My brother bought the top of the line edge pro. both systems are extremely over expensive for what they are. For the r&d? What development? its not rocket science, my seiko watch probably needed 10 times more development than these simple jigs. To anyone Id suggest tormek t7 if its available in your country, thats a much better system with lots of capabilities from knives, to carving tools, planer bledes to turning tools, axes etc.700 bucks for a sharpening jig and finger size stones for knife sharpening? That must be an american joke, sigh..
