Short answer: no. Long answer: definitely no. Zombies pose little to no threat whatsoever. First, let's answer the most important question: Are we talking about dead body Zombies or are we talking about an infection where the host is still alive? In the first case, natural decomposition quickly sets in, your bodies inhabitants (bacteria and fungi) start eating you from the inside out and all the biological functions that allow you to move, think and perceive cease functioning (e.g. digestion -> energy or breathing -> energy). In other words, the zombies will simply topple over and become unable to move after a very short time, probably within a day or two. And even before that, they won't be very efficient at spreading their infection because moving quickly requires a lot of energy. In the second case, if we assume something like a rabies-like disease, Zombies would be able to last a bit longer and move just as a normal humans would or even faster if their mental inhibitors regarding muscle use are removed (a normal human is only able to use 30% of their muscle strength outside of emergency situations to prevent damage to the muscles. That's why a e.g. mom can lift a tree to save her child, but will have trouble lifting a heavy bag any other day). However, the limits of a normal living body would still apply. To function, a living mammal needs food, water and oxygen. Assuming the virus inhibits brain function, the Zombie would be able to save energy on that front but would still need to expend it on any other action. That means they that just like a normal human, they need a constant food intake. Given that they are biting humans to turn them, they're obviously not eating them in their entirety so we're left with the problem of what are the Zombies eating to maintain function? Each other? Great, problem solves itself. Their victims? Great, no new Zombies. Animals? Not that many around in an urban environment and hard to catch without tools, so not very useful. Plants? Again, not that abundant in an urban environment and also very inefficient/indigestible outside of food crops. All of this is in the short term. We're not even talking about nutrient deficiencies in the long term like Calcium, which is needed to maintain bone strength. Water is a similar problem. First of all, if we assume it is a variant of rabies (and rabies is the most-zombie-like disease we have), people with rabies turn hydrophobic. That means, they are afraid of water and therefore can't drink it (they will also get swelling in their throat if they try, which means it's even harder). But lets say that's not the case, that means that the zombies regularly need to congregate around fresh water sources. That makes it incredibly easy to set up ambushes and kill zones. Unlike food, without water you will die within 3 days, and that is assuming you are gradually reducing activity and not being in metabolic overdrive like living zombies are usually depicted. In other words, you just need to wait for a maximum of three days for the zombies to start dropping like flies. It's very easy to barricade yourself inside for that long, even with the supplies that a normal household will have at hand. The last biological point is exposure. Depending on where you are, being out in the open all the time will do quite a number on your body. From frostbite in the winter to severe burns/dehydration in the summer to massive loss of body temperature in rain, having no access to shelter is a death sentence for us naked apes. It will take longer thathe biological factors, but it will still be quick, especially in the more extreme regions of the world like Canada or Nevada. Now that we have covered biology, let's talk military. A zombie is not a virus. It isn't invisible to the naked eye and it doesn't enter our bodies. It's a huge lumbering mass of flesh. It's quite easy to shoot. And humanity has gotten *very* good at killing other humans. A single soldier with an assault rifle and a few clips of ammo can shoot dozens of Zombies with ease. Even easier with a machine gun (see the casualty rate of suicide charges in WW1 trench warfare) not to mention mounted turrets, artillery, explosives, drone and rocket strikes etc. And what exactly is a zombie going to do against an APC or a Tank? Gnaw on it? All the driver has to do is simply drive into the 'horde' and crush them under the treads. No, a zombie apocalypse will not stand the test of a military response. But even just regular police already have access to crowd control like water throwers, riot gear and armed response teams. Then, depending on the country, civilians might also have guns. In Israel for example, pretty much every adult (jewish or druze) male has gone through military training and if they are in the reserves, will have access to their service weapon. In the US most people will have gotten laughably bad weapons training, but with enough ammunition even a complete beginner will hit a target. Anyway, the zombie apocalypse is simply no threat outside of computer models that are drawn up for fun. The idea that each zombie is able to bite one human a day is fun in a statistic but has absolutely no bearing on reality. That would be like saying, each person with COVID-19 is infecting at least one other person every single day. And that one is a lot harder to prevent. The biggest actual threat of a zombie apocalypse would be a virus that is extremely virulent and very resistant with a 100% lethality and a long enough incubation time to spread exponentially and is either airborne or waterborne. But in that case, the Zombies are the least of your concerns. The virus is what will kill you. Anyway, enough rambling. This post got a little long, sorry.

The zombie study that was done was a good experiment. But there's a reason they were students. They failed to counter the sheer number of factors. Such as population densities. Instead using an average, and how isolated groups would have the possibility of holding out for a long time, provided they got knowledge of the zombies before hand, isolated mountain towns could fortify themselves extremely well. Their model also didn't take into account the zombies health. Zombies that run out of food have to eventually starve, reanimated or not, for their bodies to produce enough energy to move, they need food. Also, flesh decay. Now not all zombie viruses are the same, but most play it off as they are actually dead and the virus is controlling the body just barely enough to keep it running. This leads to rot and decay. We saw this in the Walking Dead. With season 1 zombies being almost fresh corpses, some could be mistaken for living people if they weren't chasing you and trying to kill you. But season 6 zombies were obvious, with skin falling off the bone, what meat remained being rotten, hair and teeth falling out. This makes them exceedingly vulnerable to attacks. As they slow down from lack of muscle tissue and their bones soften they become little more than targets for human defenders, only becoming dangerous in groups. Where as the early zombies, even though hordes were the problem. Season 1 zombies were extremely dangerous inside small spaces like hallways and homes. But season 6 zombies were little more than a nuisance unless they were in a truly massive group. And it was clear, that by season 4, the zombies had deteriorated so far and the humans had become so adept at killing zombies. The only real threat was other humans.

Dont forget that if you live in a climate with varying weather changes where it gets incredibly cold or overly warm, the bodies would cease to function as the freezing temperatures would bring the body temp of a zombie so low it couldnt function and the heat would rapidly increase rate of decay on the bodies. So an Arizona summer or a Washington winter would be a form of protection during those seasons, the only real threat would be the spring and autumn months where the temperature is relatively cool enough to slow down the decay without freezing the corpse.

You severely underestimate the power of automatic weaponry. Go check out a CWIS on a navy vessel. That's the onslaught zombies would get. It sounds like hell fire and looks like it too. It's made to murder everything in the vicinity from drones to rockets going mach-3. And spits enough lead to decimate entire fields of zombies. Now toss those on humvees and river boats, maybe track vessels and amphibious assault crafts too. We could blanket America in galling turrets trained to shoot only zombies using computer technologies. We would have drones surveying and marking targets for deletion, finding pockets of infestation, even clearing buildings. We're like a few years from just sending in a robot army to sort out humanity...

I've always been a believer in the fresh zombies being fast and don't really fatigue but as they start to decay they become slower or unable to move much at all. It'll take longer for them to decay compared to a corpse though because they're moving but still way quicker than living things.

Lets admit it Once the first zombie horde has been revealed to the world The military would deal with it in a matter of days with minimal casualties Even if not I can personally assume that even 1 person could take out at least 1 or 2 zombies with ease And survival gear would be easy to fashion from your own supplies Most people already have canned food, knives, the United States owns plenty of firearms along with other countries, running water wouldn't be a problem for at least a day. People own bikes, cars, fishing kits, tents, spare mattresses and airbeds and other useful supplies which before a zombie apocalypse would just be used for recreation But during a zombie apocalypse, especially in developed countries, most people would have a good chance against zombies and the wilderness, and their biggest threats would be other humans scrambling for supplies

I want to ask did the university take into account that people already knew about zombies or is it a world with no zombie information. I always went with this fact. If we knew about zombie and say the virus was given to one person are a group of people around the world. Any person who has seen even a single zombie movie, book, etc should know to get away from that person. Even if a few people get infected, the virus shouldn't spread that far. Say people for some reason think it's just a sick person since zombies are fictional. Isn't it still smart enough take into account that that person may have a infectious disease. Also, the moment you see someone get bitten is the time for you to realize your situation and act accordingly.

Something that I find most studies and theories never cover is how necrosis and physical bites affect the body of the zombie. Surely being ripped apart and eaten multiple times, severed arteries, etc. would inhibit the ability for the zombies to effectively spread the virus. Especially as hoards gather, they would literally eat the new hosts to the point that they would be practically useless as a virus carrier. Also, what's not to stop them from ripping their own kind to shreds?

Where I see a flaw in a zombie apocalypse actually being apocalyptic would not be the zombies, it’d be the recovery. If there were 99 zombies for each living person, feasibly, each person could kill one zombie a day, and by day 100, the world would be zombie-free. I think Night of the Living Dead is probably the most accurate Zombie movie because the dead don’t win. They’d have a strong start, followed by a quick eradication.

If a zombie apocalypse is to become a worldwide extinction event, the zombification agent has to be relatively simultaneous worldwide, and not having one ground zero and spread from there. World War Z (the book) has to go through an enormous amount of bad luck, idiocy, incompetense and bad decisions to spread the zombie virus. It breaks suspension of disbelief, to be honest. Also, the zombies can't be as slow and unthreatening as in TWD. They don't have to be like in 28 Days Later, but definitely not rotten and lethargic. What TWD does right is that everyone already has the virus, they just need to die to be zombified. This can be brought even further; a incredibly long incubation time or a sort of dormant pathogen suddenly being activated simultaneously in the masses.

I like the game Project zomboid. In its lore, the zombie infection has two stages. stage 1: food borne and water borne. You become infected by drinking infected water or eating infected meat. Most of the population is susceptible but some humans are naturally immune to the stage 1 infection. Meaning they can eat and drink all they want and never even feel a little sickly. but then there's stage 2. Blood and saliva transmission via an infected individual. The zombies. There is no immunity against it. Scratches have a small chance to infect. Because typically there isn't infected blood under fingernails but with rotting corpses there can be. And bites are always 100% infectious. You can not survive a bite under any circumstance. I like this multi-stage infection idea because it explains how rapid and wide-spread the infection happens in kentucky and how it continues to spread beyond the county despite the military enforcing quarantine. And eventually infects most of the planet. But still allows plenty of room for survivors to emerge and survive amongst the living dead. I also like the game because you can choose what kind of zombie threat you want. And just how sparse or dense their population is.

That depends on how bad the infection becomes, and if world governments are all eradicated. WWZ had a very good take on this idea, as although there were militant groups outside of the Rocky Mountains, (which is where the U.S. government was now basing its operations out of) the U.S. Government was still alive and kicking, with people flocking to them in droves every single day. Society and government wouldn't just breakdown overnight in a zombie apocalypse. It would have to be so bad that literally all echelons of government are completely wiped out for large and powerful militant groups to rise up and take power.

Also, the factual issues are so random yet unique, nice that you explore the academic and the military involvement. Interestingthe topic stande between comic books, cheesy B movies, modern books and big actor movies (Brad Pitts). Yup it covers popular culture, the blankting of modern society. Just what is the military up to anyway? Maybe "Area 151", ha ha! Oh yeah Arron I got the audio/audible book "Stick a Flag In It", quite engrossing and very nicely percieved. How the Bitish got to be were thay are as a society hence where the world is as well. Also, I loved the King (can't remember the Kings name) but he explodes as a gas expands his skin tissue. Upon moving him to his crypt finally the corpse explodes covering attendees with human goo. A wonderfully "Monty Pythonesque" type of tale- good job on the verbal delivery and the book in general. I can’t believe no one makes this point, in order for a zombie to move or do anything it would need to use energy thus requiring functional digestive, circulatory, and respiratory systems to break down food and supply it’s cells with the energy. This would make the zombies susceptible to bleeding, suffocation, and trauma to the abdomen making them die not too far from how a human would. Along with that them biting people could cause them to die from their wounds or infection before becoming a zombie possibly leading to the virus being too virulent to be much of a threat. It would be much much more of a threat if it were airborne though. I’d say that a warm open climate for human quarantine would be more optimal as the zombies would decay and be infected with human-illnesses faster and will burn more energy trying to run across big open plains in the sun. The number 1 fear I would have is a zombie reaching a cold climate and getting persevered in ice.

A few friends and I had this discussion a few years ago and we all concluded there were 4 things that would be essential for humanity's victory over the zombies: 1. Always go for the head shot. 2. Never go outside to check on that weird noise. 3. Everyone gets a full body bite inspection at least once daily. 4. Anyone who panics or freaks out is used as bait or to distract the zombies so the rational people who actually want to survive can make their escape. I added in that it would be best to move to the hottest and driest desert OR to the far north tundra. Basically any place that the environment would prevent zombies from reaching you. Desert would dry them out and arctic would freeze them solid and both options would leave plenty of time for easy clean-up by the living.

Assuming direct contact is necessary for transmission, the biggest factor of us winning or losing vs zombies, I think, would be the speed of the zombies. If they’re all very slow, we will win, but if they’re wicked fast, we’re screwed. If slow, everyone move North and hunker down where it’s cold, and the zombies will freeze solid, so won’t be a problem. Good fishing and hunting up here too. Just need a shelter with a wood stove and some lanterns and you’re golden, or solar or wind power, but solar struggles in the winter since the days are so short. Also, all it would take is no more than a few years at most of hunkering down, and all the zombies would be gone. Their bodies would decompose quickly, and a muscular system is still necessary for motion, so the time the zombies would last would be very limited. That’s what’s so deceptive with the show “The Walking Dead”, by the time they’re at now, almost all the zombies would have completely decomposed.

It depends on what franchise they're from. But tbh I think it'd be hard to lose to zombies from any franchise. They don't move in an organized way like a military would, they only ever want one thing, which is to feed, knowing that makes it easy to predict and control their behavior. . Even militia's armed with simple melee weapons would be able to fight zombies. You just need to ensure you're safe from bites, stuff like chainmail or whatever the modern equivalents would be. Modern military doesn't really use body armor for the neck or limbs, but it probably wouldn't be hard to adapt something. The only way humans would ever struggle with zombies, would be the scenario's presented in some novels where the entire world is infected simultaneously. Like 50% of people just wake up a zombie one morning. That would present more of a challenge.

another factor that wasn't mentioned here is how little the virus would spread out to small, remote communities that have variable season temperatures. In areas that experience freezing weather, zombies (being composed of dead meat) would also freeze solid. Those remote communities that are most self-sufficient (ie-their own power generation & distribution network, basic civil services remaining intact, etc) might only have to wait it out & chop up whatever frozen zombies they may find before they thaw out. Another attribute of frozen meat is that it's also susceptible to conditions like "freezer burn," which greatly accelerates decomposition; muscle tissue would peel & drop off, predatory & scavenging types of animals of all sorts would pick away at corpses (if these are species immune to z-virus). It would be worse if "Z Day" was occurring in areas in a transition period between seasons. Zombies would alternately freeze & thaw repeatedly just over the course of a few days, which would make decomposition *extremely* rapid...they would literally fall apart in less than a week & spend half of that time frozen stiff (& not spreading the disease at the time). You may be the kind of person who hates the idea of shoveling snow off your sidewalk but you've got much greater protection against a zombie invasion than people who live in environments that are consistently warm. Even if the vast majority of humans are wiped out & replaced with zombies, those zombies would eventually "starve" when their "meat supply" runs out...If zombies need to eat, then they can also starve to *final* death. There are a lot of small communities that may never even see a zombie infestation in their areas at all, so I think humanity has a better chance to survive & recover from a zombie apocalypse more easily than most might consider. See, those "intellectual" types & other scientists don't & can't consider *every* factor into their equations...The Ivory Towers don't have *all* of the answers & there is no foreseeable future in which they will. They also tend to underestimate how clever some people can get, especially when survival of the species as a whole is at stake; even figuring in certain amounts of randomness begs the question on how much randomness they need to account for? Similarly to the Fermi Paradox, much of the equation cannot be sufficiently defined well enough to even *have* an answer because there are always going to be factors that nobody can think of, let alone measure with any degree of accuracy. At that point, even the smartest scientists can't do any better than flipping a handful of coins & use the answer at the moment they stop spinning...And then toss them again & again & again. Scientists can't even stop arguing exactly what data is really *essential* or even include to come up with an answer! Computer engineers have a phrase for this: "Garbage in, garbage out." Exactly what data is garbage & what data is relevant? The key phrase here is what you might hear often in sci-fi stories involving advanced AI computers..."Does not compute. Insufficient data."

honestly, if the zombies can transmit through bite only, this shit is the easiest claps ever. A zombie is just a human without its reason, and reason/thinking are our strongest tools. You could quite literally fight and kill a zombie like you were fighting an npc in a videogame with an extremely basic ai. Grab almost anything around you with range and you are at an advantage. If your only goal is to stop them from biting you, then you cant really be bitten unless swarmed. A zombie has decayed, the muscles arent in their prime condition, you can quite literally just hold them back with your hand.

The US should be mostly okay vs the undead because of the amount of guns they have per square mile in so many back gardens or houses, however that doesn't neccesarilly mean they will beat the undead, but they should be able to stop most fairly early assuming the undead don't grow in number too quickly, but it also leads into the issue of near enough everybody has a gun, so the living are more of a threat than the undead are which could ultimately lead to their downfall, it's hard to imagine that unlike in the movies, the undead just wiped out most of the states on their own, it can also depend on how fast this thing spreads before people take notice and realise, places without guns would have an even harder time versus the undead but less issues from the living, however whoever does own a gun has a huge advantage, because whether they have ammo or not, if your stood 10 feet away from someone with say a knife or a baseball bat in your hand, your not going to charge someone who has a gun pointed at you in most cases because you don't know if they have that ammo or not and it could be the worst mistake you make, walkers will be mostly no problem you could avoid them easily and with them only walking you ca easily out maneuver and punish any undead with a smack in the head or plunge of a blade in their head, you got a gun they aint coming near you, but the issue I see is for those that have guns is needlessly wasting ammo, and it would start to dry up pretty quick. Whether its shooting an undead you don't need to or fighting another survivor for whatever goods they have or in self defence. I'd say without a doubt if zombies just walked we'd win if they can sprint your screwed because you can have your guns or your blade or your blunt weapon but good luck fighting off them running at you in groups with that, you eventually have to reload and your melee may not have an ammo problem but have fun slashing 6 zombies charging at you at once and being quick enough, let alone being ran at from a blind spot. I however think child zombies will be the biggest threats, they may not have the strength of an adult but if your dealing with a bunch of zombies running at you and there's a child in that mix while your focusing on the big guy the little guy is going to get you and you have to strike down to hit them whereas the adult will still be coming and get you while your dealing with the child zombie If this thing is viral, that just poses more issues because someone just has to die to be reanimated and it will depend how fast the reanimation happens, could be seconds, minutes or hours, which would also play a big factor and that will mean the undead is never truly a vanquished threat unless someone can come up with a cure

I think it would be less likely to have issues of zombie rights and more an issue of property rights. Zombies can't be taught or trained, but you can still rent out your auntie's corpse.

The Zombie apocalypse started during the industrial revolution, more than 100 years ago. People who doubt this should take public transport for a week, witness thousands of mindless drones doing the same repetitive task at least 5 days a week...

@@oliverguenther9243I've a job, but hate repetitive tasks. I won't commute to an office building on daily basis, just to enrich someone else and make it my bosses easier to micromanage me into utter inefficiency. Instead of thinking binary, either being a companies minion or leeching of of welfare, there is a third option called being self employed.

There are 5 ways to survive one. 1. Zombies become stupid within 2 days after their brains rot away. So go into hiding in a secure location with no windows and hide out till they lose conscious decision making. 2. When they are nice and feral, running on animal instincts, lure them from their groups one by one into falling into deep trenches. When you reach a maximum of 100 zombies, start lighting each pit on fire burning each one down to ash. Do this repeatedly till you count down the population of them per demographic region and surrounding populations as well, think of it like multiplying 2.785 added onto the city population number. Never exceed past 100 or some of them will escape. Count them by the 10's while incinerating them. 10 groups of 10 zombies per pit. Make sure they all are accounted for. If you wait up to 2 months while digging them, their muscles will deteriorate making them slow and sluggish. 2. When you are using bait to lure them into the deep pits, run around with a sharp sword and slice off their arms and heads, they will still move, but it will give you the advantage over the majority of them reducing their numbers down to lure them in. 3. When most of them are ash, go back and slice their legs, then limb by limb in a dump truck, using a fish net, grab each body part and only fill each dump truck 3/4rths high per load, use lots of them if you can as a group effort. If stupid people fall in, they are already zombies, do not save them. Dump them into new dug deep pits, filling them about half way up so you can see them all. Then light them ablaze. Make sure they are all torched to ash by using a metal pole in the ash to sift the pile of ash and keep lifting it so see if anything gets stuck on it while stirring it. 4. Then when all of the majority of them are gone. Go on caution mode to search houses making banging noises to filter out stragglers. Get them all, chop them up, burn them in a deep pit, stir it to filter it out. 5. Final stage, Easter egg mode. You get the idea. Find all the hidden one's unlocking every area in every city even the private residence's. Search every knook and crany, even sheds and basements. Then all that is left to do is to wait for the rich to come out of hiding and make sure nobody coming out of their bomb shelter is infected as a reliability, wait till they turn, before repeating all the procedures. That is that. Foods everywhere as your rewards as dried canned food sanitizing the cans before opening them is your best ally. You can sanitize everything with sodium based minerals such as salt and baking soda, which everyone has, and tap water or bottled water if you are that paranoid, which most of everyone has.

Max Brooks actually described Humans against the zombies. We'd have slim chances against them. I recommend people actually pick up the book World War Z and not the movie. In World War Z, it's actually detailed on how humanity would respond to such a catastrophe. Military adaptation, weapon developement, geopolitics, logistics, socio economic hierarchy where the blue collars would be considered premium jobs, government reaction, marketing of goods, etc. Great book. In the book, human warfare has heavily relied on the emotion of fear, that our whole military doctrines were designed to make the enemy feel fear to the point of giving up rather than actually killing them. But what if, the enemies that we face are unable to feel fear? Rather, biologically cannot feel fear? And excerpt from the book: "I did my best to control my fire, and my sphincter. 'Just go for the head,' I kept telling myself. 'Keep it together, just go for the head."... We could have stopped them, we should have, one guy with a rifle, that's all you need, right? Professional soldiers, trained marksmen...how could they get through? They still ask that, critics and armchair Pattons who weren't there. You think it's that simple? You think that after being 'trained' to aim for the center mass your whole military career you can suddenly make an expect head shot every time?" and “‘Shock and Awe’? Perfect name. . . . But what if the enemy can’t be shocked and awed? Not just won’t, but biologically can’t! That’s what happened that day outside New York City, that’s the failure that almost lost us the whole damn war. The fact that we couldn’t shock and awe Zack boomeranged right back in our faces and actually allowed Zack to shock and awe us! They’re not afraid! No matter what we do, no matter how many we kill, they will never, ever be afraid!”
