You suggested sharing additional tips... I very often place an EQ with low pass and high pass filtering before my reverbs to avoid sending unwanted frequencies into the reverb. Alternately, you could place a de-esser to knock out those "spitty" moments. In Ableton, I have an effects rack with a full pass path and a parallel reverb with resonant high and low pass filters with out of sync modulation on each filter. This creates a shifting source into the reverb. It's great for static drum and percussion samples and gives you a varied space behind the source. Try phasers, choruses, etc.... One more.. try putting a saturator and compressor before the reverb or delay to simulate the soft clipping/limiter circuits in old rack units. I'm a big fan of the Deltalab Effectrons and Alesis MidiVerb 2. They have a great way of breaking up or getting brighter when you hit them harder, this method gives you some of that. Send less and the effect is darker/cleaner, send more and it's brighter/dirtier.
The layers of sends for all the reverbs and delays is the part that I could spend an hour just seeing how people do it.
The best and the most original tutorial about reverb and delay I've ever seen. Great composer, great player and great teacher.

Wow, thanks!
"They always sound cool, until they don't" is gold! Sooo true!
That panned slap on an acoustic is a neat trick I'll be using
You’re a great teacher! Thanks for taking the time to do this. 🙏🏼
A great thing Jon did that he didn't point out: sometimes the delay isn't (only) in the effect, but the arrange/performance of something IS the delay. The lead voice sang "on and on", but then the back vocals sang "on and on and on and on and on and on" which is basically just building in the concept of delay straight into the composition itself!

Great point. Also glad he pointed out the use of an analog style delay. Logic’s delays tend to be very digital, so looking for better options. The delay designer can duck out nicely but it’s a bit tedious. Some days it’s fun to control the pan, filter, and volume of each delay, but most days I prefer turning knobs.
Thank you Jon for imparting your years of knowledge, allowing some of us to grow our results by leaps and bounds.
One of the best reverb tutorials I've seen. thank you very much.
Sounds so pleasant... And thanks for clearing up some things for me🙏
I just came across your channel and I have to say this video is one of the most helpful I’ve found on you tube. Thanks
This was fantastic! Loved the example of sending delays to the opposite side when choosing to hard-pan a track. I’ve read that that is the way to do it, but had never seen the idea applied. Also loved the in depth description of each reverb/delay and how you are using it.
Really enjoyed your discussion of the room. That acoustic guitar recording sounds great.
Wow! Thank you!!! will check out your site too!
So clean, informative and funny! Thank you Jon
That harmonica is straight up from heaven
Excellent demo and explanation. If you can use that level of talent, creating a song about reverb and delay, it only makes sense that you know what you're talking about. Thanks for adding to my knowledge base.
Very well done. Not only do you teach but you make the lesson fun,
That song at the end was absolutely beautiful
Thanks for this masterclass, Jon. Great tips about mixing the different types of reverb, and I especially liked the way you run the FX inserts through an EQ first. I'll be trying all your tricks for myself :-)
Incredible... I dont think I ever had 22 min of full focus while watching a youtube video. Just amazingly made and super helpful. Thank you
Great video! Thank you much!
Your hard work on this tutorial is greatly appreciated. I learned a lot and will use this in my production.

Great video Jon. Sometimes I will use a compressor on the reverb/delay bus that is side chained from the vocal just to duck to retain clarity. I notice some reverbs have this built in now.

@@Sesaon3 I was going to mention compressing the reverb as well. I sometimes use a compressor on a reverb that is on a drum to get extra boom.

If I start doing tutorials, I’m using this concept of recording a song to demonstrate. I like the idea of simplicity as well to start with standard reverbs and delays then simply control its mix and time. Kudos to the modulation trick as well. Thanks!
That was fun. It would be great to see a similar video when you are limited to what you can do on a live performance.
Great tutorial thank you!
Thanks a lot for this :)

Wow! I love that 'cool moment' on ~18:11, such a genuine emotion, perfectly reflecting the sound. Thank you so much for making your videos so good, comprehensive and dense with useful wisdom! I also love the song in the end! 🎸🎹 🎶After this song we have no excuse on using the Reverb and Delay poorly! 😆
very cool. thank you

amazing video. Should have thousands of likes and more views.
This video is fantastic! I often struggle with excessive reverb and harshness in my mixes. These tips are definitely worth trying out. On an unrelated note, I was wondering if you could recommend a display monitor that would be a good match for my 2017 iMac with 5K Retina display. I recently purchased a Mac studio and I'm having difficulty finding a suitable monitor. Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated.
You need to release this song!

Embrace that hard pan, my friend! Love panning stuff +/-100. Have not used the Softube algo verb yet, I have been in love with the Ocean Way UA plug for the cohesive room stuff. Also adore "playing" my hardware boxes during mix, moving things slightly so the modulation is less reliable, more real world/random. Works especially well with OTO BIM delay.

very good tricks. the song and your vocals sound like dire straits , hehe

Great video as always, Jon! Loved what you said about using the original source material and getting creative with it. I'm a huge advocate of that.
Thank you
Great tutorial, lots of great insights and useful info. We're going to share this with student from our apprenticeship program . I just wish you didn't have to make the title "Why your REVERBS & DELAYS sound AMATEUR!", but I suppose it helps get the video more views. In thinking about this excellent video, you don't say at all about why other people sound amateur, you just present a bunch of really cool reverb and delay techniques.
Hi Jon. Thank you for the great content. Informative and a fun song indeed ;) I'd like to point out that your voice quality made me instant think of Mark Knoffler, I think if you released a record in his style (post Dire Straits when he went solo), added to your mixing skills, there could be something there!

song actually slaps
The only time I use reverb on a bus is when I know I'll be sending multiple channels (like snare and toms) to that one reverb. Otherwise, everything gets its own reverb - whatever I'm feeling like at the time, but usually Seventh Heaven Professional because it is versatile and always sounds amazing
Can you write a song about paradiddles and flams next?
Might I suggest a bit of additional parallel compression on the vocal to help the softer parts be more intelligible. Thanks!

Hi, what benefits Valhalla delay gives you over Echoboy? I own Echoboy and always thought that's all you need.
What vocal mic are you using?
🔥🔥🔥🔥
Right away some of this is a bit advanced for me. The terms "inserts" and "return" for example. Where might I find something more basic?
great
How do you edit this magical content? Any software tips for tutorials? Thanks man! Keep em coming!
Are Slap L and Slap R mono returns?
You brushed over one little detail where you said that you didn't want any pre-delay on your guitar track because you wanted more togetherness (hugely paraphrased). I usually default to some pre-delay on all my verbs. I probably reach for that little knob pretty quick on every reverb plugin I put on a track. I tend to like it, but could it be contributing to more mud issues in a mix? Also: Curse you for writing such a catchy ballad. It's stuck in my head. I don't even like ballads and I've been singing "Reverb, and Delay" around the house all morning. My kids think I'm crazy and my wife is begging me to shut up. Thanks.

Just like other effects, pre-delay or most other settings, it can likely depend on the track and overall mix composition. What I think I'm trying to say is one exact setting isn't always what to use. Modify, like bending it a bit from x, to that specific sound and vibe you're after in specific guitar, vocal, piano, etc.
Sounds very Dire Straits.
👌
Because you need an actual board and mixer....but like everything it's get better with time....most DAWs don't really improve sound quality....they just easier to with and not as cumbersome with all them patch cords and space...all music sounds better going through a board..plus you gotta test the mix in different speakers etc

The filming, editing, grading, music and mix of this video is so good. And that's on top of all the excellent info. 🤌
