Why your outfits never look like the inspo photo & how to fix it | Episode 48 | Sustain This Podcast

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Is it a "fit" or do we just like the vibes they're giving? In today's episode, we break down why carbon copying a fit from the gram or Pinterest can be detrimental to personal style, and how to use outfits we see online as inspiration rather than shopping envy.

Girls, I‘m 44 years old, and I am in a very interesting situation, because I’ve spend half of my life without the internet and 3/4 of my life without social media. The biggest difference from what I remember, is that before the internet/sm I was way more confident about my own style than I am now. Also, I never thought too much about it, I just WAS stylish, because i never bought anything else, than what I liked. I never bought anything I liked on somebody else, except one yellow trench coat from Mango, that Kate Moss was advertising and I loved her look in it - but when I was younger, I’ve had quite similar facial features to hers. I also bought less, because I bought only pieces I really liked. And then I wore them. Never did I end up with the today so “popular” 20/80 closet. To be fair, I’ve had some poliester pieces in my closet, but I wore them - they were mostly dresses bought in Vintage Shops, and somehow I would even say, they were good quality pieces. At least I wore them a lot.

I really like using other types of photos, eg landscapes and nature, for outfit inspiration. Very often it’s seeing colours I like and already own, but in different combinations or proportions, or maybe it’s a vibe. For instance, a seascape on a cloudy day is very different from a dark red rose. Maria Sadler did something similar on one of her style courses.

Oh yes, Signe, I so often would do the "oh, I love that outfit." However, it just didn't fit with where I was living or visiting, etc. I am addicted to Alyssas brilliant interpretation of Pintrest outfits. I to now look at the elements of the outfit, instead of wanting the exact pieces. Thank you for that Alyssa. Love your content ladies. Thank you all ❤

I used to love Pinterest, however I'm a bit annoyed with it as the content is often an advert now instead of real inspiration.... However I still use it. I love the concept of training your brain around your ideas on this (thanks to Alyssa and Shop your closet I can see how we are doing this on those calls). I think I still have some way to go on stopping myself from wanting new stuff, something for me to work on there. I can totally relate to Christina that's how my brain works too. Thank you All for these fab podcasts.

One of the frustrations I have with Pinterest these days is the lack of variety. I’ve been looking for spring outfit inspo and get all black outfits and blue shirts with beige bottoms. There has to be more!

I created a separate Pinterest board for only outfits I see and like that I can specifically recreate from items I already have in my closet. Then I keep a separate board for aspirational look. That way when I want to figure out what to wear, I can pick a look I can definitely recreate.

I am loving combining Pinterest with Indyx. Working and having 3 young kiddos means it’s hard to find time to play in my closet (but I’m working on it!). I am trying to invest my time in digitizing wardrobe so that if I find something on Pinterest, I can recreate it as an Indyx outfit immediately to try later and not forget about it. Feels like playing in my closet even when not at home 😊

Brilliant girls!!! I have had a hard time using Pinterest but you gave so many good ideas! Also I love the way you say that you just can’t copy anything and make it work! I goes back to play dress up and go through your wardrobe. And then like you say; when does it feel like you? Now I am going back to Pinterest and see it with new eyes and a new ways to search! 👀 Maybe that way I can find my words. By the way; Why is summer such a difficult time to dress??? I feel the same! Could you maybe delv into that topic in an episode? How do you deal with it?? Thank You for all inspo! ❤❤❤

I tend to use Pinterest to get ideas for how to style certain pieces I have and want different ideas for. Recently though, I’ve been using my own Pinterest board of photos of my own outfits to remind me of how I’ve worn things in different seasons. Have been taking photos of my outfits for the last couple of years, so have quite a bank of inspo now! Sometimes I recreate an outfit I’ve really liked and felt good in, sometimes I tweak it a bit with something slightly different, but this way, I don’t feel the need to shop and my outfits always feel like me 😊

i normally listen on Spotify but had to come here to see the Jeff cameo. so sweet and also love to see Alyssa and Christina together. of course it was a great conversation, being a more artistic visual person has really helped me out in fashion b/c it's helped me identify visual elements versus specific items/or brands, but it's not always easy, personalities and fantasy selves are hard to deny.

In my humble opinion most of the times we do not want the outfit or dress the model is wearing, we want their bodies. Almost anything would look high fashion on a skinny well put person with amazing skin and well done hair, makeup. No, it is not the clothes we desire, it's the bodies.

For me I’ve found I have to start neither at the wardrobe nor the inspos; I always have to start with photos of myself other people have taken. This is how I find out which items in my wardrobe I actually wear, and which are actually working well for me. It also helps me see more objectively which items I don’t look/feel best in- and how I want them to change if I don’t like the way they look on me. This gives me ideas about what kind of items I should declutter/acquire next, and how to alter the item if deemed necessary/possible.

I started out using Pintrest to get ideas on how to wear certain pieces (the 'love but how' ones, to borrow from Allison Bornstein's concept). Now, I use it as an alternative to shopping if I'm feeling particularly 'spending and scrolly' where shopping my closet physically just isn't cutting it. It allows me to see the what-ifs and style them without the buying. Then every once in a while, I do a board-edit and any pictures that I'm not in love withbor intrigued by get removed. Much like a closet edit but without the clothes (and concern of their 'after-me life') and with all the feel-good effects of decluttering 😊

Another great topic for introspection 🤔 It reminded me of an outfit I saw a celebrity wear about 10 years ago. I owned the V-neck sweater but thrifted a beaded neckline tank top to wear under the sweater but it just didn’t feel right because I couldn’t get the tank top neckline details to “peak” out the way the celebrity wore theirs 🤣 After struggling with it for an entire year I got rid of the tank top and used a very long, soft gold beaded necklace and looped it 3-4 times and it worked perfect with the neck of the sweater 🤣 This was an eye 👀 opening for me, realizing I loved everything about the outfit inspiration but it only worked for me when I used what I had and used different pieces to create a similar effect. Alyssa’s videos on outfit inspirations and shopping our closet to achieve a similar but very “personalized” look and feel has made me far more creative and appreciative.

When on Pinterest, I type in the item I am looking to style (ex: black mini skirt) and then go through and see what/if I like it. I also look at photos of fits I don’t necessarily love just so the algorithm doesn’t only show me things I’ll like. Lastly, I look to menswear a lot to help inspire new ideas because they play with proportions so much more than women do.

Hi Ladies, here is a sustainable challenge suggestion with Mother's Day approaching soon! Please select a favorite picture of your mother or an important mother figure in your life, and recreate the look according to your interpretation! Rules:It has to be a picture from at least 5 years ago, preferably 10 or more years ago, you can only use items from your own closet to reinterpret the look. Please encourage your community to post their own inspo photos of their mothers, and how they recreated the look on social media platforms. Hopefully, it will spread the word about sustainable shopping, by using the elements of style, while honoring our mothers in the process!

Great podcast episode with fantastic advice!!! Things to think about from all of you. I adore Pinterest! Besides key words, specific articles of clothing pieces, I use runway looks for inspiration. I think of aesthetics, mood, pattern, color, texture, shine, scale, and proportion. I'm petite so obviously exact pieces are going to fit me differently, lol. I follow the people I like to keep getting their posts on my home page. Also when I find something I like, I look below at similar things and pin 📍

Wow- one of your best episodes yet! I love the reminder that the focus is on building *you* and your sense of style. And pulling back to identify the elements of style reminds me, strangely, of what I needed to do when I was doing landscape design. Rather than put a very specific plant in a spot, we’d call out a “job description” - how tall, what shape, evergreen or not, etc. - so that when it came time to do the planting, we had a choice from what was available, rather than getting too fixated on one specific thing.

I love the discussion. I'm a quilter. I used to blog a lot and people would often ask me for patterns for my quilts. My answer was always that I'm trying to teach YOU how to make YOUR quilt. I don't write patterns, because I want you to understand the elements of design (color, value, shape, line, placement) and principles of design (unity and contrast, repetition and rhythm, movement, symmetry, balance and proportion), and what will work for you, so you can make your own quilt, not mine. If you understand the tools, you can use them to make anything.

Sometimes it's asking the right questions, such as how to wear purple? I recently was inspired by a color combination by a girl who is much younger than me, with a completely different style. I almost got rid of a plaid shirt with turquoise and purple in it. I saw her photo, and decided to wear it under my purple sweater. I now get more compliments on the color combination. Plus we usually do not have the beauty of a European city in the background of my outfit. However, I was recently inspired by a pretty spring floral dress, that had a European vineyard background, but I noticed there was a care-free quality about the outfit and background. So, care-free has become one of my key style words for my spring and summer wardrobe.

Copying a look and expecting to look like the photo is like going to the hairdresser, showing the hairdresser a photo and expecting the hairdresser to give you the hair and exact look in the photo. You may be able to get a resemblance but you’ll never look like the photo. Good or bad.

Great conversation! I use Pinterest to find outfits that are new and exciting to me, but FEEL 100% me. Unless I feel like I could walk out the door wearing that outfit tomorrow, it's a no. I think you should feel an instant connection to the looks you're pinning and wanting to recreate. Almost like you unlocked a new part in your brain to see your existing style differently. That doesn't always happen when I open the app, but oh it feels so good when it does.

I've been part of some of Alyssa's workshops and I remember one where the inspiration picture had a cowl-neck jumper or knitted dress - something my mum loved but I don't like on me. BUT I love my silk scarves, so I recreated that neckline with a silk scarf, which I loved, and do a lot anyway, and I remember Alyssa commenting on it, that she loved that I'd made it me by using a scarf. I do find with Pinterest that so often I'm drawn more to the colours than the styling of an outfit, although I've also pinned several masculine or menswear outfits, because they speak to my tomboy side that just loves being comfortable in a sort of English countryside kind of idea, with the corduroy and tweed and earthy colours that I feel good in.

My hairstylist once put her thumb over the model's face in an inspo photo I'd shared. She asked, "Do you like the hairstyle, or is it her airbrushed makeup and perfect bone structure?" So many times it was the latter; the haircut was nothing special. I should apply the same principal to Pinterest. Can I see myself wearing this type of outfit at the grocery store or my local coffee shop? Or am I drawn in by the beautiful location or lofty lifestyle it conveys? If the 'fit still resonates, then I can drill down on why.

I'm thinking about the part of your discussion where you tweak an inspo image from Pinterest to suit you/your style: At which point does it turn into a whole new outfit? Or whole new style? And what does it even matter if this happens? On the same train of thought: how do we know when a tweaked look is stylish or not? I feel like the answer lies in how you carry the look... But is that it? And how does that apply to runway fashion? Or is fashion different from style? My questions are not to say I didn't enjoy your episode, by the way😊 your talk inspired these genuine questions in my style-newbie brain. PS... Looking for the Copenhagen shop your closet episode😋

I started using Pinterest about 5 years and discovered I was draw to blazers. That I could use them to dress up anything. From there a bought a blazer and loved the look. As I kept up with the Pinterest photos, I discovered my style. This helped me to not get sucked into trends that didn't suit me or I even liked, just because they were in the stores. I saw a red blazer styled on Pinterest, and I had a feeling it would work with my style. I placed it on my list and searched until i saw the perfect one for me . I finally found it at Value Village. I wear this blazer a lot in the spring into the summer. Pinterest has also helped me discover my body type, and why some styles don't look good on everyone. I would have saved a lot of money if I was more aware before.

1 question: what if the style you love and you feel the best in, and the most like yourself, doesn't seem to translate well to the situations you are always in, or to where you live? Like you live in the country and everyone dresses super casual, but the style that feels like you and that you love is more elevated, like blazers and loafers and trousers?

The Parisian women past and present that inspire me are all very slim, because clothes don't look as good if you aren't in my opinion. Just look at Jane Birkin when she became overweight for a while, or Brigitte Bardot or Catherine Deneuve, when they're overweight, they look matronly, old and bloated, and not at all chic, even when beautifully dressed.

I've never used Pinterest and I don't think I'm tempted to start now. I'm prone to addiction to things like that and I already try to limit my fashion content during the day. And I'm afraid I'd get too overwhelmed - I follow a few people I take as inspiration and the "availability" of many options at once could make me want to try everything at once. The variety is probably be nice because you can create your own blend of different styles... But unlimited options actually scare me lol. I'm also not excited about recreating outfits with the things I have because I will always compare it to some other person's version. I'm not in the right headspace right now I'm afraid. I try to make my own outfits out of my own clothes. Probably a nice tool if used responsibly... but I'm not responsible so I'll pass 😅

Perhaps because of my age I have limited experience with Pinterest because (like another commenter said), I have found the images boring or the same. I grew up with fashion magazines that featured clothing that I would never consider buying because of their cost but I could always takeaway the elements I liked - a colour or texture combination, a silhouette, a new way of wearing a common piece. I can't seem to get this inspiration with Pinterest. Maybe it is the way I am using it. On the question why slavishly mimicking an outfit doesn't feel right, for me at least it's because I feel like a fraud and that any fashion follower would quickly identify me as what we use to call a fashion victim. I feel much better when I use an image for inspiration but interpret it to suit me using the elements of style that Alyssa advocates so eloquently.

I love Pinterest, but Pinterest, like Instagram, is fake. People pose. Sure, you can look look cool in the middle of the street with your coffee cup and your coat hanging over your shoulder in a 'I just woke up like this and threw something together to look effortless' kind of way, but in real life, you're hurrying down the road, almost losing your coat and sloshing your coffee all over the place while trying to balance your heavy work bag and hoping to catch public transportation on time. Those pics are not real life. People simply don't look that polished all the time. Half the time people who are in those pics don't even wear those things in real life.
