I think sand dressing and should I brush sand down the core holes are the most asked questions of recent times. Good content on differences between the different types of sand. I remember reading that this all originated from the Scottish links golf courses where a green keeper noticed his green performance improved when sand got accidentally blown on to his test plots.

Golf courses back in the day were built on sand dunes as this land wasn't useful for much else, the oldest course in the world is 'Old Course' at St Andrews and guess what it's built on sand dunes. The greens were made from the sand as that is what was there. As golf courses moved inland, they stopped using so much sand. Lots of golf courses started to build greens out of what was there at the time, soil etc. These are know as 'push up greens'. Mostly due to cost. If you think of a golf course and the landscaping around it, bunkers and what not, push up is just that, soil pushed up to form a 'green' to play As Golf courses greens get so much traffic on that one area - the golf green it needs to be able to be free draining and have a level true surface for ball roll, If a ball bounces around alot this is considered bad, the truer the green the better. This is where sand comes in, but the key thing is and is often overlooked when people think about using sand on their lawns, golf greens have drains under them and the sand helps perculate though it and down to the drains and away. Most lawns don't have that luxury. Sand is fantasic for levelling as we all know, however not all sand is equal.

What a lovely dog! I'm in the US and where I was raised we didn't even edge our lawns. So leveling a lawn is completely new to me. What is the purpose--beyond adding beauty to the lawn (of course, that's a good purpose in itself!)? I don't understand how sand levels the lawn?

Mostly for mowing ease. Can't get a uniform height grass if there's 2" dips the mower straddles. Bought a house about 2 years ago now, and we had a sprinkler issue that sucked a bunch of topsoil out and while the HOA eventually fixed the sprinkler, they didn't fix the soil. So now we've got a high soil strip next to the walkway, that the trimmer always cuts down to dirt, with a trench right next to it that the most never cuts, so it's like 6" long. LOOKS flat, but it's nearly twisted ankles more than once. It's why I'm watching these videos lol

Thanks for a good video. Based in Sweden, not so dissimilar climate to NI. Looking to level my lawn this spring and I have some pretty major unevenness due to building works leaving sunken patches. In some cases there are height differences up to 7-8 cm. Would you recommend soil or a soil /sand combination to level this? I’m concerned about a 100% soil mix contracting too much.

No No No, sand is very good solution. Use more sand, use rack 6 week after the sans is in the soil. But the best priod is automun before grass goes in dormancy. And second period is march or april during the first week with sun. During this 2 period it rain and the sand goes to the soil. If you don't apply the sand in rainy period. Watering watering and watering every day -> 4/6 week (more expensive) I'm not in the USA i'm in france (lower normandy) the weather and grass type is same like you. Sand is great for levelling, not much else. Sports sand should be used if you are using sand

You are correct. Better yet, core aerate and then take in sand to help remove compaction and create space in your soil for air, worms etc to work through it often

The reason I'm left scratching my head is because I've never heard of anybody ever just putting sand on their lawn? Lol at most like in my case I just did topsoil mixed with a little bit of sand to help with air and filtration to kind of get in and let the topsail work down and integrate into the low spots that I put it in in the lawn. As far as trying to turn my front yard into a Sandals resort I don't understand why anybody would be dumb enough to do that LOL food for thought

@joshuaroyal3272 - As crazy as topdressing your lawn with sand seems to novice gardeners, it is what the professionals use for this task, as sand doesn't compact like soil does. This means soil (even topsoil) is more likely to develop ruts and bumps after frequently walking over the lawn, compared to sand. Hope this helps. As Robbie has mentioned before, sand obviously doesn't hold any nutrients, but if you are just using it for levelling that is fine, but if you are concerned the soil is poor to start with you can of course start with a topsoil and then move to sand the following session. Alternitively go for a rootzone sand+soil (70/30) pre-mix.

I disagree. You growth example shows you killed it off then put sand on. That's not top dressing an active live lawn. Everyone who has a cylinder mower should know to sharpen/replace cassettes its just part of it. Your drainage example is of a dusting of sand not a build-up over years of application and use of aeration to help drainage. the same dusting of soil would have the same effect. If you use the wrong products and do not do your home work you will get weeds and drainage issues with any top dressing.

I get lots of comments/questions from people that if they apply a dressing to sand to their lawn, will it magically dry up. No of course not. If you want to improve drainage in a lawn, install drains! (It has nothing to do with what you topdress with) They use sand on sports pitches as it drains well, however, they also have drains under there and the sand helps it percolate through the rootzone to it

@@Premier_lawns_official correct however a soil mixture of sand and soil can only benefit as soil will retain water sand won’t. Again in the right mixture and application with other aeration

What a load of nonsense, it completely depends on the texture of the soil the grass is growing in. If its clay soil it already retains more than enough nutrients but sand will improve the soil structure over time. Never heard of anyone using plastering sand either, it should be washed sharp sand.

@@BigBlueRabbit As I explained in the video, sand isn’t suited to most people’s lawns and is a bit of misconception that a lot of people have, you have to use sand to level a lawn. My lawn is constructed from what is know as 70/30. 70 percent sand and 30 percent soil. That’s why I use sand to topdress it, as there is a lot of sand in it already The vast majority of people have clay or normal soil and if you add sand to it, especially something like sharp sand then your going to do more harm than good. Hence the video title
