Why you shouldn’t release domestic ducks into wild

Spring is here which also means an increase in abandoned ducklings. An organization on Long Island has rescued some this last week in Queens and Brooklyn and shares a warning about releasing these domestic animals into the wild.

This is frustrating to see. Where I work there is a nice pond/walking path area. One day months ago I saw a duck. I found the guy that dropped her off there along with 3 others. They are pekin ducks and he raises them then releases them... I didn't realize that they weren't able to survive. I've been feeding "bubbles" the one female duck now for months. She's very vocal and would come up to me and eat out of my hand. Low and behold now on monday she's not at the pond anymore. I've searched the last two days for her and nothing. My fear is that a fox got her 😞 Then I find out that the dude that released 4 ducks told me that 3 of them were killed within the first couple weeks by a fox. She was the only survivor but he figured since she was there for months she figured out how to survive... This makes me mad. I think he said he was 4 more ducks coming at the end of August that he is going to release at the pond again. But they will probably all die again just like his first bunch. People are annoying as hell when they do stuff like this. It's not fair to the animal.

We were the recipients of 17 free, full grown ducks. 11 mallards, 5 pekins and a wood duck. The mallards never had their wings clipped, and I just didn't bother, so they're still capable of flight. This was demonstrated when our Pyrenees tried to herd them. 😆 Anyway...they've been out of the pen now for about 2wks. They've learned there's a creek on the property and a food source near the house. They happily waddle, fly and shit in a 5ac area, almost always bedding down near the house, sometimes farther out. They'll split into 2 groups and then reconvene as a 'flock'.. These ducks, before we got them, never left an 8X20 roofed enclosure. I fully expect them to migrate when the weather turns. Whether they will come back or not is anyone's guess. tl;dr: domesticated ducks can be reintroduced to the wild providing you provide some small amount of care during their transition.

domestic breeds do not fly ..so they are easy prey they will not live out in the wild and to release them to the wild is cruel

You could place the ones that can fly near a pond where you would see other ducks they WILL survive because it’s in their nature
