He's so super flawed, you love him and other times you want to slap him in the face and scream at him. Sometimes you want to give up on him, but youcant. You root for him and want him to be happy. He so often is the bane of his own existence and it makes you mad, and you know he's unhealthy and often far too naive, but you want him to win. You want him to win. You need him to win. Because you fall in love with him. He becomes a friend. Friends are flawed and they fuck up and piss you off. But when push comes to shove you'll bleed for em. That's why Kaiji is such a great character. Because we get to truly know him.

  • @wedwhb9899

Yes! It makes them all unique and usually such wacky styles help to focus on the details in the story or the background drawing or clothes and all, it helps when you don’t try to draw what others want but your own style, cause then you can draw and base the scenes as much as you want! I mean, one of my favorite animes are mob psycho, and the style is so wacky and simplistic but it’s just grow on you and you can’t help but love it! Also! Since it’s simple the animation and fighting geography is sooooo amazing! And the characters all grow on you and all Truly, these kind of animes are always unique in more than one way and another!

I almost teared watching this, since I feel the same way as Ishida. Though I didn't get into massive debt by gambling, I got into massive school loan debt and credit card debt. My mother co-signed for student loans and I have a hard time pay it. My credit score is demolished, and my dad harps on my mom about me while I try to find my way and try to find a way for me to pay it all off and get my second chance at living debt free again. I barely have any clothes, my depression and anxiety caused me to gain a lot of weight. I've been kicked out of my house by my dad before, and I just feel like a massive burden to my family since they keep getting letters. Not to mention the IRS sent me a letter saying I owe them money for making a mistake on my tax returns. I feel like I'm in a black hole, and almost looked to gambling a lot as a way to make some money quickly, but never did because I knew it was a bad idea. So seeing that scene really struck a nerve.

He's so super flawed, you love him and other times you want to slap him in the face and scream at him. Sometimes you want to give up on him, but you can't.

The most chilling thing about that girder scene is when you realise the double meaning of the consequences of and why Ishida gave his winnings to Kaiji. 1. He saw himself as a burden to his family. 2. He didn't want to be that same burden for Kaiji, and so held in scream as fell. The chilling part is this: because Kaiji turned around, Ishida became a burden, too add insult to injury, because Ishida held in his scream, Kaiji was hit even harder by the fact that Ishida fell due to the shock that someone he was JUST talking to vanished without a trace. Ishida's selfless action of trying to protect his family and not be a burden to Kaiji ended up doing even more damage and making him more of a burden than if he had just screamed.

I'd rather anime have more varied art styles in general instead of 99.9% of all anime having the same character model and the exact same facial features (BUT MY CHAR HAS GREEN HAIR THO, MINE HAS A CUTE PIN ON HER HEAD THO). What made this show a masterpiece to me was its complete lack of predictability. I went into this show not knowing how long the manga was, so as far as I knew, Kaiji died at the end. That sounds preposterous when you say it, since I can't name another anime in which the main protagonist dies permanently, but the absolute Hell they put Kaiji through on an episode-to-episode basis makes it impossible to tell... like they might actually kill the poor bastard. Obviously, he survives long enough to finish out two seasons, but that's all we really have to go on. Almost right off the bat you can see that Kaiji loses. Badly. Frequently. That simple fact means that you go into each game with no idea about whether he's going to come out further in debt, maimed, or with a stupendous victory. That alone made the show an emotional roller-coaster for me, and by the end of the second season it was almost unbearable.

@Bobby Hill I actually don't mind the artstyle, it was the perfect choice for a show like Kaiji, and I do agree that any artist should be experimenting with new things even if they might not end up good, and also, I do not think a trope being done thousands of times can make a story boring, I mean, demon Slayer is like every mediocre shounen anime mixed together but with good animation, but it's nowhere near boring.

Alexander Archer that's a great point, you could put most characters of "traditional" looking anime in a lineup and the casual observer wouldn't know they were from different shows. whereas with kaiji, I have never seen the show, only heard about it last week and I will forever know him and his show. especially cause I'm gonna go watch it lol

I actually like (finding intriguing) simply because of the art style, its grotesque, but fits narratively- I thing because Kaiji is so grotesque you get why he is both an outcast and feel that his fear of irrelevance, his struggles, his obsession is real. Plus, the true underbelly of the sinful, the wayward path full of dangers and corruption is supposed to look both dark and full of dangers.

The unemployment rate is not a metric for the health of the economy, or the quality of life of it's citizens. If you want to know if you're country is doing good or not, the simplest way is to find out the spending power of the currency, then find a graph of population against wage to see how many people are earning a liveable amount of money.

Yeah, it is a pretty nice and gentle introduction to mahjong, all things considered. All you really need to read up on to understand it is how hands are built in mahjong, the meaning of the handful of terms you call out during play, and the basic strategy of paying attention to discards to figure out through process-of-elimination what tiles your opponent might have in his hand. It still took me a bit of reading (though the scanlation was kind enough to provide explanations and links) and not gonna lie its not my favorite arc anyway. My favorite arc is the one RIGHT after it, Salvation Game. FUCKING SALVATION GAME.

I came across it quite randomly, and I have to say that it's one of my favorite series. With Kaiji, and Nobuyuki Fukumoto's other works, there's such a unique, tense atmosphere that seems impossible to be emulated anywhere else. The art style adds a lot to the tone as well, and I absolutely love it. Also, the mahjong in the manga is simplified, so it's way easier to understand than if you were watching Akagi.
