Why you should use a 135mm for Portrait Photography

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

All photos edited with my Amalfi Lightroom Preset Pack: www.digitalfilmactions.com/li...
Hey everyone! Today I want to share with you my favourite go-to composition tips for portrait photography with a 135mm prime lens. I borrowed the Sony A1 from Sony Australia and the GM 135mm f1.8 is my own lens. You do need a lot of space to be able to move around with a 135mm, but when you have the right location it's really worth it. Let me know in the comments if you like shooting with a 135 :)

Thanks Julia for your great videos! I love using 135mm! I also like using 100mm for “minimal” portrait photos, meaning: relatively close-up pictures of interesting items and people leaving out parts which aren’t strictly needed (discovered this when I only had the 100mm with me).

Love your work. You always have amazing models. I would selfishly love to see you photograph kids, bc as a Dad, my small kids are my 'models' 99% of the time. Kids bring so many other challenges. I'd love tips from you on how to keep their attention, get them to follow directions, and prevent a 4 year old girl from picking her nose.... Asking for a friend..

Thank you! I do family shoots sometimes for work outside of KZread and I agree kids do bring on a new challenge! From my experience, they have a much shorter attention span for photos. I find that they’re really excited and into it for the first 15ish minutes of a shoot before they start to become more restless as time goes on. I try to work as quickly as possible getting all my main/posed shots at the beginning of the session. Then when I notice them getting restless I ask them to play/walk around to get some extra action/in the moment shots 😄

Great composition tips. My own favourite combo is a 17mm f4 and a 135mm f2.5 (old adapted glass) on A7IV. Just a magical combo. Like many though, for years I lived on 85mm for portraits. It was only recently that I started using the 135. Not sure what prompted the switch. Perhaps just to make photography feel new again? Ask me again next year and I may be raving about 28mm. lol

I usually shoot portraits at 50 mm or 85 mm since those are the lenses I have but once I had a chance to try exactly the combo of Sony A1 and the 135 GMaster and I really loved it. I tried pretty much everything it could do from a close-up to a full body shot (you have to be pretty far away from the subject to do it though) and now I can say it's my new favourite focal length for portraits. The only bad thing is that the lens is so expensive :D

Hi Julia! Interesting subject from a 35mm lover, however I cannot agree more using a 135GM for portraits. Recently I tried 50/1.2GM for the same and I also love that when having tighter space to take the shot. The only trouble for me to handle (both for 50/1.2 and 135/1.8) is the extreme thin depth of field wide open when taking headshots filling up the whole frame. Then I can have only one of the eyes sharp, that I do not like much, so I prefer stepping backwards and cropping in post as opposed to staying at the same distance and closing down the aperture. I saw you also have a lot of lovely shots where only one of the eyes were in focus. What is your preference and approach? - I know swapping the lens quickly to 35mm and issue solved, but seriously the beautiful background separation of the 135mm lens is just simply not possible using a 35/1.4GM.

I personally like the look of just one eye in focus when the subject is not directly facing the camera, as long as it’s the eye that’s closest to the camera I think it’s a nice style! When they are facing directly to the camera then I try to shoot at the right angle to get them both in focus

Hi Julia, I watch your videos and I love your work. I have a question for you. I am an amateur at best and I use "old" equipment. My camera is a Nikon D300 (crop sensor) and I have a Sigma 18-35mm (37mm-52.5mm on crop sensor) plus the "nifty 50, Nikon f1.8 50 mm lens. What lens would you use on a crop sensor to approximate the 135mm on a full frame? Would something like a Tamron 90mm, f2.8 be close enough? I realize it isn't f1.8 or better, so what would you recommend? You already commented previously to me on using my Sigma 18mm-35mm lens for portraiture. Thanks!

Absolutely love my 135 for street photography, extra reach can find some candid shots out of nowhere really nicely. For these posed shots, would a mini reflector near the camera be beneficial to give her eyes a catch light in them? Those stunning dark brown eyes do look a little dead in some of your otherwise amazing shots without any catch in them.

I use the A-mount Sony Zeiss SAL 135 1.8 ZA with a LA-EA5 adapter on my A7R IV. It’s not optically perfect like the GM, but has the ability to effortlessly render any background blur smoothly. I did not get that with the GM, with some images having harsh background blur, unless you are carefully choose the background. The A-mount lens is big, slow focusing and noisy, but the results are worth the compromise. I wish the LA-EA5 adapter would work with the older bodies, because, I really don’t like the massive amount of pixels and file size of the A7R IV. I feel that the SAL 135 1.8 ZA has an uncanny ability of rendering any background smoothly, just like the Sony 85mm 1.4 GM lens, which I would like to purchase some day.

My favorite lens is my 70-200 2.8. I like to shoot at 135+. Love the compression. Very curious what exactly you are using to capture your video? I assume that's some kind of transmitter on the bottom of the Sony. What exactly is that and what are you using to capture the signal? Haha. Made this comment before hearing about your reasons for not using the 70-200.

I think that 135mm works best for half to full body portraits. Headshots look nicer with 50mm and 35mm when in non-studio environment.

I prefer the 70-200 since most do not zoom to actually 200mm, they stop about 165 or `180. This way I am not limited, I find primes to be limiting, but yes you can walk with your feet, I understand that as well. The only prime I use is a 50mm. Did a whole wedding with a 50mm only.

I notice that on Aroha's instagram that she does not have any of the photos from this shoot posted. These shots are amazing and she's absolutely radiant. When you hire talent for a youtube tutorial video such as this, do you offer the talent access to some or all of the shots? I'm curious how that works from a business perspective; I'm ignorant to how that side of photography works, as I've never hired talent myself. Thanks for sharing your talent with us.

Yes, I always share the final photos with the team involved whether it's a paid shoot or not. I find that models and some makeup artists usually prefer only posting phone photos to their feed compared to the photographer's final images. I think it suits their branding a little more as phone photos seem more spontaneous and real compared to camera images, especially when there is lots of bokeh like in these photos! Usually they will send my photos to their agency and those images will get used in their book rather than their instagram feed.
