    Thank you! 😊 of course you have to be aware, do your research and use your common sense when visiting a place like Medellin. 99% of the time you’ll be absolutely fine but of course there’s always that small chance that even being careful something could still happen. We spent a week in Medellin and 6 weeks in Colombia and never felt unsafe but of course had heard stories from other people about their bad experiences. We hope you choose to go because Medellin is a wonderful city 😊

    Look we’re not saying that Medellin is a completely safe city. There are dangerous areas and dangerous people living there. But this is a minority. If you go wandering around the wrong areas of cities in the US you’ve probably got just as much chance of being mugged. Taxi drivers in any country in the world will try to take advantage of naive tourists…as will people trying to sell you things because they know you have money. All you can do is research what the more touristy and safe areas of a city are, base yourself there in a place that has got good reviews and use your common sense when exploring - don’t flash valuables if not necessary, don’t be out too late etc. 99% of the time you’ll have no issues. Unfortunately there’s always a small chance you’ll just be in the wrong place at the wrong time but again this can happen in any city in any country in the world.

    After 4 weeks of holiday in Bello, Envigado, el Poblado, Medellin, I got out of Colombia. What a crazy place not all but many people are out to find ways to scam you out of as many pesos as possible. Tried the airbnb in 3 different locations one infested with cockroach the other was threaten by the host son in the next apt for complaining about the music at 3am 5-6 nights a week and the last was a total scam listed an address for a decent location apt. in Envigado but was brought to a completely different address at the time of checking in. Not to mention being ripped off by almost all the taxi drivers (not everyone has Uber on their phones) and short changed by many vendors. Sept. 12, 2023 to mid Oct. 2023. I also met these 2 guys from France in El Poblado at a money exchange place (I'm bilingual French, English and some Spanish from Canada) who told me just the day before got both their cell phone stolen at knife point in El Poblado by 2 local thugs in broad daylight on a busy street and no one had the courtesy to even call the police, not that it would have even made a difference.

    Sounds like you got pretty unlucky on your trip to be honest. We were in Colombia for 6 weeks and never had anything like this happen or ever felt uneasy about a place or situation we were in. That’s not to say that we weren’t harassed A LOT by people looking to get money off us. But it was nothing that a firm no wouldn’t solve eventually and is pretty much par for the course in much of South America. All the Airbnb’s we stayed at were very nice. We always make sure we thoroughly research the city we’re travelling to first and only book Airbnbs with a certain amount of positive reviews and comments. As for the mugging we appreciate this can happen to anyone if your in the wrong place at the wrong time but it can also happen in any city in the world not just Medellin or Colombia in general. All you can do is try to be as street smart as possible and keep any valuables out of site unless absolutely necessary. Colombia is a great country but obvs with all those bad experiences we can see why you didn’t want to stick around.

    The very lucky few and no South America is not at all like Colombia, boots on the ground in Paraguay is the complete opposite than Colombia, par for the course, what a stupid, ignorant deduction to coral all of South America into one judgement tells me how uneducated you people are.@@KittiandJon

    Book smarts don't translate to street smarts. If you act and look like a tourist, you will get got. You need to blend in. Be smarter when travelling. It's Colombia! A free tidbit....don't wear shorts. Colombians don't wear shorts. If you do, you will stand out, and bring unnecessary attention to yourself.

  • @KittiandJon

    @KittiandJon

    @@BigRett this is actually really good advice 👍 and for the most part we do follow this advice when travelling through Central and South America. In Mexico we never wore shorts for this exact reason (well maybe on the beach!). The reason we wore shorts for a large portion of this video is that we were on tours pretty much the whole time so felt a bit more comfortable wearing shorts in that environment 👍 but we totally agree with you if you’re out wondering around by yourself.

    @@KittiandJon Like many other countries in South America, and even on other continents, it's essential to be aware of how to prepare for and avoid bad situations. Colombia is not perfect, nor has it ever been advertised as such to tourists. Instead, it has been promoted as safer than it was in the 90s. While some people understand this concept, others simply visit and complain. Colombia may be the right destination for some, but not for everyone. Ironically, as a Colombian, I'm hesitant to visit the USA (or certain parts of it) nowadays, given all the negative news and events I've read and seen about it. My only advice is: avoid trouble yourself, be clever with your decisions. Don't do in Colombia what you would never do in your own country. Colombia is not a rubbish bin to go and do what you would never do at home. Everyone (specially tourists) needs to respect it to enjoy it!

    Why you should NOT travel to Medellin, you people must be really ignorant of what its really like out there!

  • @KittiandJon

    Not ignorant. We make sure we research every place we travel to fully before going and then do everything within our power to stay safe and out of trouble whilst we’re there. Sometimes you can just be in the wrong place at the wrong time or have a bad experience no matter how well prepared you are though and we’re sorry you had a bad experience in Colombia.
