Episode 39 - Why You Should Train 3-7 Yards:
After training 3-5 yards, we should work on training 3-7 to continue to develop good fundamentals. As a civilian, things CAN happen at greater distances but are more likely to be within 7 yards. If we miss within 7 yards, we know that we didn't execute the 7 fundamentals of shooting correctly. This keeps us sharp and up to par for any potential self-defense situation that might happen, God forbid. This video explains the importance and the mindset behind why it's important to train close.

2 things: I don't think people know how hard it is to shoot at 25 with that accuracy with 1 finger. And switching to the left on the reload and shooting is tough as well. Great job Alston. Learning a lot.

Thanks for the support Raylan.
The Dunning Kruger effect is very real. Most gun fights are within a car length (7)yards, and in, and so-called professionals (police) miss at that range. Handgun triggers are heavier than the gun itself, making it easier to disturb during the trigger press. Shooting is simple but not easy.

Dunning Kruger is very real. Appreciate the comment 👍🏾
Excellent! 👍 I liked the "sit on the couch and talk trash" remark 😏 I've been shooting since a boy of 8 with my father and my great uncle guiding me. Both were soldiers and lawmen. Both were also veterans of combat, and shootings as an officer. They trained me to draw and shoot from less than 1 ft. to as far as 75m. with a handgun. By the time I went to basic training, I was more than ready. After 3 tours in Vietnam I too became a peace officer, and managed to walk away from 3 shootings during my career. Because of my father's and great uncle's skilled and professional experience in training that I'm still here. Now in my 70s, I still train on my own range, and close quarters drills are a big part of how I train. And fundamentals are at the top of the list. Recently discovered your channel. I was very impressed and immediately subscribed. I'm going back to other videos you've made, and catch myself nodding my head at times thinking "man, this guy knows his stuff". Thought I've been shooting for over 6 decades, I'll be the very first to say I'm still learning. And your channel is an excellent source of knowledge to add to my own. 👍

Facts
Remember guys, the closer the action the less time for reaction. Muscle memory is real and practice at different distances is essential. Check with your sight picture before shooting, and across lanes. Your range won’t thank you for damage to walls etc.
Great videos. I shoot a lot but you've got me questioning how I go about it. Fundamentals are what it's all about. Thanks for the reminder.

I agree with you 💯 I always start with the circle drill up close for marksmanship. My "warm up" 3-5-7 yards
My son and I play battle ship at the range. The target has some sized circles on each ship. We run a magazine each, and check the target. Want to find out how good you aren’t? Put that target at 7 yards. When I’m within an inch of those dime sized dots I feel like I’m doing pretty well. Fundamentals up close, at medium distance, and at 25. Shoot small targets. I’ve learned “Aim small, miss small”. Thank you for reinforcing that.

@@swissmademan I train to not be embarrassed in front of my LEO son, and to outshoot my Firefighter son. 😂 Gotta keep reminding them that youth and skill is not always better than age and experience.
This video comes at a good time. There was a recent incident where a city worker was trying to stop a car robbery but the victim was shooting at point blank and still missing.
That's a nice range! I have to bring a range finder w/ me to confirm distances. You also have the whole range to yourself to be able to mount a spotlight 'on the range itself' and shoot at another lane...That's some privilege! Us 'regular folk' would never have the 'ability and means' to 'train like that...'
The range 3, 5, 7 etc. is exactly what my fryand & RSO told me when I started trying to become a shooter. The remainder of the lesson was icing on the cake. Thanks for the info and I'll apply what I received to my quest of becoming a better shooter.
In a fire fight distance and Technique are your friends. It's nice to see this being taught, because at point blank your both equal, it's at distance where you shine
I have annual memberships at 2 indoor ranges and I had to qualify at similar distances with a range officer on a shot timer with speed and accuracy. I'm qualified to practice holster draws and rapid fire drills that many ranges don't allow even for their members. I train predominantly at 3, 5 and 7 years so I did see some new drills and movements that will help me diversify and advance my training. 💪🏾👍🏾

@@alstontrainings a lot of Range officers come give me positive feedback on me hitting center not how far I have it.
Your approach, instructional technique, and delivery are above par. I like your approach to convincing and demonstrating why fundamentals at close distances are just as important as when the target is at the far end of the range, I spend 33 years in LE with two thirds of the time as a firearms instructor. For probably 20 of those years, entities where I worked required quarterly qualification course to start at 50 yards. Distance is the most perishable of all shooting skills, especially when someone does not have or has forgotten the fundamentals and eventually the 3-7 yard strings will result in rounds impacting outside the scoring area. I am in the process of transitioning to teaching citizens, and I appreciate your approach to teaching and relating to the student.

When I started I felt like I needed to hold good groups at close range before I had any business opening it up. It worked, focused on 3-7 for a quite a while before I went 10, 15, 25. Eventually I tried 50 and even 100 just for fun. If your fundamentals suck shooting long range isn’t going to do much to fix it.

FUNDAMENTALS. I start with 6 rounds at 9ft , moving up to 21 ft., with the goal of having a tight shot group while maintaining a good sight focus, trigger press, and strong grip. When doing these drills with my 40, 45, or 10mm, that strong grip is of the utmost importance.
I agree that short distance is the way to go because with practice comes speed.
Other instructors that I’ve had also suggested to train at 3,5,and 7 yards. Statistically speaking that is the range of most armed defense distances. Anything after that you should be able to run away or hide. Thanks for your videos. They’re very informative. Good advice and views for things

100% agree crawl, walk, run. Working law enforcement and being prior military we train as close as 2 meters. When dealing with a person and they pull a weapon at close range you need to know how to get them away and get rounds off immediately. You can never overtrain you can only be over confident and cocky. Nice 25yd shot by the way.
