Why You Should Stay Away From USI/FSI/Wittern Group Equipment

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This video is an example of very poor engineering and design on the part of particularly older USI vending equipment.
Sorry for the portrait mode.
In response to this video, USI actually came to us with one of their own videos in May, 2019. In fairness to them, we are adding a link to it here. They address a couple of the problems we raise in our video, and actually reveal a much easier way to get access to a lot of the deck, though the evaporator line traveling through the insulated wall would prevent you from sliding the deck very far out of its housing without cutting the line. This information is very helpful, but was not available in any manual or video from USI prior to the release of our video, and then subsequently their own, which is linked to below. It is our hope that in the future, much greater detail will be included in the service manuals for these machines so that technicians are not left scratching their heads and potentially missing features that allow easier access to components for servicing. Thank you, USI, and particularly, Chip Wittern, for the helpful video response.

Great job with the video. You don't stammer, stutter, and/or hem and haw. Your points are direct, succinct and interesting. Again, great job!

I use a hair clog sink snake to clear those drain tubes, take about 30 seconds after removing the top cover. But yeah these chill centers suck majorly!

I appreciate this video. My wittern 3521 is leaking in my location and I plan on getting there in the AM to finally fix this issue. I'm hoping I can get it back to properly working. Any advice on getting to that drain tube? I believe mine got disconnected from the tray like you mentioned.

This link is posted in the description, but after we posted this video a few years ago, USI produced and released their own video which can be found here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/X42im9iBYJDbgJs.html It should be helpful in allowing you to access the drain line. Prior to USI releasing their video, we were completely unaware the procedure they show in it was possible. There is no comment in the manual on how to disassemble or service these decks. Hope you get it figured out!

You can call us at 970-623-1272, and we'd be happy to help you out. You will need to have your machine model number ready, because we will need that to determine what upgrade options you have. Thanks!

I have an fsi 3120 & 3172 satellite combo machine. I purchased it used, prior to seeing your video. I am no expert in repairs. However, I want to update my machine. Is there anyone that I can call to make necessary repairs and updates before putting it in a store?

As mentioned as a follow-up in the video description, USI developed their own video and sent it to us in response to our video, so we are aware of that now. They're still a hard unit to work on, and the line traveling up through the ceiling of the housing to the evaporator still makes any work on the sealed system difficult, but it is not as hard to service as we thought when the video was made. Our problem more than anything was the overall less-than-optimal design, and the lack of documentation that explains how to disassemble or service things like this.

So, in 2024, would you recommend a Wittern machine or warn a newbie away from them?

  • @VendorsTech

I would say that their current model machines have improved dramatically over their models from 20 years ago, and are probably just as reliable as other reputable brands out there. However, since I don't sell new Wittern equipment, and don't often get to work on machines newer than 5 years old, I haven't seen inside most models Wittern is currently producing, and so cannot make an informed recommendation one way or the other there. My recommendation to any newbie though would be to buy high-quality used equipment if at all possible until you are established and know vending a little bit. Buying brand new vending machines is expensive and overwhelming if you are new. I would start out with older model AP and National snack machines, and Dixie Narco soda machines and learn that way at minimal up-front cost.

I am aware that Wittern owns several companies such as Selectivend, FSI, etc. Are you specifically talking about FSI models only?

  • @VendorsTech

    @VendorsTech

No, I'm talking about anything now owned by Wittern. To be fair, I have not had an opportunity to touch much of what Wittern has made within the last 5 years, it takes a while for new models to make their way out into the industry and then for us to get called to work on them once they're out of warranty. Wittern has occasionally made good equipment, and I would say some things are getting a lot better as time goes by, but they are still essentially a budget manufacturer, which means they cut corners sometimes where they could do better. Replacement parts costs are still much higher than the rest of the industry too.

  • @VendorsTech

If you are buying current-model USI machines, I have to say their equipment has improved dramatically over the last 10 years or so, and I wouldn't be concerned about buying new USI equipment at the moment. All I could recommend is that you buy models with the least tech on them if that's possible or if that is an option. Sophisticated is not always better when it comes to vending machines, especially if you're new to the industry or not an experienced vending machine mechanic.

I come up against stuff like that all of the time. If you think that machine is a piece of junk you should see some of the European stuff.... Fas, Evoca/Zanussi, N&W (Necta & Wittenberg, Maas .... It's pure junk, but 1/2 the price of Crane gear and trying to convince vendors to part with that same cash for a 4 or 5 year old Crane Merchant vs. a shiny new Evoca Tango is tough. The business model here is buy cheap machines - mostly combinations, never service them, never clean them, let them fall apart, lose sales, lose sites and continue on that hamster wheel of false economy for years. I would have gone in the top of that deck with a small holesaw and followed up with a nut driver then stuff the hole up with putty afterward.

Yes, I hear you. There are some European machines made in Spain sold over here - Jofemar - and they're a joke to service. The quality of parts on the Jofemar actually seems to be decent, but they are WAY over-engineered, and are way too complicated to repair, even on simple things like replacing a fuse holder. They were not well thought out by engineers either. Jofemar's U.S. customer service is awful too. I actually did do some cutting on the next one of these USI decks I worked on identical to the one in the video. I cut the upper bracket with "legs" off from above the drain pan, as the tall sponges it holds are not necessary, and was able to get to the back nuts on it that time and get the whole pan out of the way. It took an hour less that time to do it all, but still is ridiculously hard compared to how easy it could be. Nothing in vending repair is really "impossible", there's usually a way to do it if you study it for a while, but the time required that shouldn't be necessary, and that someone has to pay for, is what is so aggravating in the long run.
