Ah, Gut my beloved. Ive settled here multiple times. Anytime i try to settle anywhere else it just pulls me back. That vibrant blue, the convenient location, the fertile soil rich with all the minerals, and the land teeming with walking sacks of meat and leather. With Slopeless, the terrain becomes less of a problem, and really, the Beakthings are only a problem for weaker characters. We already have a golden rule for kenshi base building in "dont do it too early or youll get your shit pushed in" which applies for literally any region, Gut included. But really, you could have a sneaky character build any building and run into it for cover early game. Beak things cant enter doors(unless they noclip through). The only difference i see between Gut difficulty and the difficulty of any other region is that Gut tells you straight up what you gotta deal with, while other regions pretend to be quiet and inviting so they can slap you with raids. Gut is love, Gut is life.

In the early game, you can kite nearby slavers into the beak things to help clear out the area you want to settle for you. And all you need is a single house with a door to be safe, they can't actually open building doors.

Gut was essentially my first ever base location, and it was extremely memorable. I didn't even know about walls or crossbows, I just had one dude who was really good with a falling sun and I got everyone else to evacuate inside whenever the gutters showed up. I recall being worried about the taxmen coming and not having the money to pay them, and when the day came I watched them get ripped apart before they could even get close, so not having to pay UC taxes is certainly a benefit of Gut. One thing I can personally attest to is the sheer amount of meat and leather I stockpiled in this location, I even ended up naming the place "Crazy Jake's Meat Shack" in reference to our main export and the man with the falling sun that made it all possible. I love this whole series, and to all of you: GO TO GUT!

I will forever have fond memories of Gut. Settled here on my very first playthrough of Kenshi purely for the lovely aesthetics and I was woefully underprepared for the task. Huddling in my little shack hut as beak things patrolled outside, sending them out to attempt to clear them out or save my party members getting eaten and finding myself weirdly grateful for my beaky oppressors when they cleared out raiding parties for me. Felt like a true taming the wilderness experience.

Beak things became the instrument of my survival, no raiders can stand up to them once your city walls border their nests. And if they got through, every building was a tower bristling with crossbow turrets. They're a source of infinite biofuel, damage output, meat, and leather. Always good to see appreciation for Gut. It's one of the most defensible and profitable regions, as well as one of the most beautiful, and there's seldom a dull moment. It's probably my favorite region of all, and one of my most enjoyable playthroughs of the game involved settling there. During this particular playthrough I was roleplaying a group of "rangers", hunters of beasts and bounties that did a little opportunistic banditry and slavery on the side. Aside from their headquarters in Heng, they had a little storm house on a plateau in the middle of Gut that served as a hunting lodge. Beak things couldn't fit through the door, so the group could shoot at them from mounted crossbows on the roof all day, every day, which made for great dexterity training. They took shifts at the crossbows, nest raiding, and leather crafting, raking in such enormous profits that this became their permanent stronghold. The outpost was named "Gutter Alley", for the long and narrow path that snaked between unscalable plateau cliffs and makeshift walls ensconcing the growing complex; This alley was the only path to the entrance, and was frequently patrolled by beak things lured in by the dead and dying left in gibbet cages outside the gates, serving as unwitting defenders and a convenient delivery of meat and leather. This position was so defensible that the rangers could run the outpost with just a skeleton crew and some slaves to basically print money with excessive meatwrap, grog, and iron production. I don't think I've ever made a base as satisfying and effective as this one since, and it was a fun exercise in making the most of rougher terrain, and taking advantage of everything a region has to offer, even its dangers.

Beak Things are extremely dangerous in the early game but once you have a couple of competent fighters, or a good killbox setup like you mentioned, I find them to be the most reliable source of meat and leather, and XP. Also good source of cats, if you're brave and/or crazy enough to raid some nests. :)

If you can knock out a gutter nest (and have an obscene amount of cats) you can take the beak things to slavers, put them in cages, and buy them back from the slavers to increase relations with the gutters Note: you can only do this once per gutter as the slavers will butcher them the second time you drop them in a cage

Gut is great! My latest base was on the large flat peninsula bordering Howler's Maze visible in the distance at 8:32 . Great soil, ok iron, lots of free meat and leather (my party was really high level at this point). The only problem was no copper, but micromanaging a bunch of guys to mine the nodes at the Gut/Heng/Howler's Maze border point every now and then wasn't too big of a hassle. Very convenient location if you want to destroy the United Cities. I think you initially get their tax collectors, but that stops if enough of their cities go down and the Beak Things eat a lot of them. Also sometimes Reavers manage to beat the odds and make it to your doors.

Gut was my favorite place for a base or outpost. Placed dead smack in the middle with no walls. I liked putting outpost buildings over the ponds to prevent characters from pathing into them and having to swim. Harvesting gutters was automated along with everything else. Raids and the UC taxman usually never made it. Great biome, both beautiful and brutal at the same time.

I decided to settle there with just the knowledge of a lot of beak things being there , and it ended up being one of the best bases once my crew was strong enough because the beak things were just a natural defense tool. I rarely had fights where all of my enemies were starting out at full health by the time they got to my base.

I made starter bases in bought buildings nearby, and once I got enough food and money rolling in, I started buying and exporting supplies to set up in gut. I thought the beak things would protect me somewhat and I could also train on them. Worked pretty well but I didn't know about the reavers, so that was an extra surprise challenge. However, once everything evened out, I like this base a lot. Getting supplies there was sort of annoying at first, but once it's running it feels good and close to a lot of things. Allied with the crabs, UC, and slavers... makes a nice little niche here. By the time i got there though I already had hydroponics... I couldnt really imagine setting up here at the start without a lot of challenge.

As a Kenshi noob I tried settling Gut after hearing of its many wonders. Equipped my weak, early-game squad with just enough materials for a bughouse, materials mine+processor, 1 Adv Windmill, and 4 spotlight Mk.II crossbow turrets. Snuck deep into Gut, got everything built and running without a single fight, turrets all manned and ready. Then the wind completely died, rendering the turrets inoperable...just as wave after wave of beak things moved in...(playing on 4x nest size setting). Had to hide in the bughouse for what seemed like days until the wind started back up. Gut has extremely fickle wind speeds...

Gut is one of the more fun locations to settle in. After you can deal with Beak Things they pass from being a downside to a massive upside, as you can potentially survive solely on the meat they provide and have a strong economy with leather crafting due to the high frequency of the attacks. You will rarely get taxes by the UC as their squads will perish before reaching your base or they'll reach in a very weak state.

There is a very important exploit for gut to point out. The beak things in gut are part of a faction called "gutters", and in that faction you also have a single scorchlander that lives in the strange camp on the northeastern side of gut. If you kidnap that scorchlander and bring him to a slaver settlement you can abuse the relationship bonus that you get from freeing slaves to become allied with the gutters faction and then beak things will no more target your faction members while still aggroing all outsiders that come to your doors. To do so you just leave him unconscious on the ground and the slavers will imprison him instantly, then you buy him back and you leave him unconscious on the ground again, rinse and repeat until you're allied with the gutters. It is expensive to do so since the dude is worth like 10500 cats to buy from slavers each time they imprison him but it can be done. You can technically do the same thing with the Beastmaster to ally with skinspiders but it costs even more since slave price is proportional with skill levels

I've a settlement almost in the middle of Gut. I've had 2 beak thing invasions but mostly they ignore my walls and tear apart any raids (or traders) that come into the area. I've had 2 or 3 raids make it to my walls out of dozens of attempts. Tons of meat and leather if you want. I emptied one nest of eggs and made a tidy profit from them. I tend to not want to agro beak things as they are cheap security and actually an interesting wildlife to watch (from inside thick walls of course). My only 2 issues are copper and a quick in and out of the area. I end up going around to the border with Howler Maze and then swim in and sneak through my gate. But as my base is mostly self sufficient there isn't a lot of need for this. As to copper, it is a short distance from my base location and that is right next to a beak thing nest. Sneaking to mine sometimes works. I've enough stored to meet needs but maybe next time I'll have walls around it as well. I just didn't want a massive footprint. Thanks for the video! Give Gut a go if you have medium level characters that can set up the initial settlement.

Gut is the first place I ever settled my first time playing Kenshi. It was rough at first, until I got a slaver raid and saw them walk up to my collection of small shacks, talk about enslaving us all, then get ripped apart screaming by the nearest beak-thing nest as all my people went back inside to keep tanning leather. Eventually, I got one of my guys the best scout skeleton legs money could buy, and used his ridiculous speed to kite vast swarms of beak-things to Heng, or whatever raid was coming at me that day, then use my pack animals to loot the vast amount of corpses left behind. Best region in the game, by far. The sheer amount of free stuff that gets dumped into an even moderately well-defended base is staggering here on top of the excellent minerals, stone and fertility, and the tax collectors regularly being eaten outside my walls.

Just stumbled upon your video. Gut is really not to bad to build a settlement. In my current game I built my outpost on the border between Gu and Stormgap Coast, north of Brink (?) and west of the fog village. there is a nice flat hilltop and a little valley on the Stormgap Coast side with lots of space to build and farm. The beakthings are a good source of food and money (leather). I regularly hunt for them, they are pretty easy to kill if you know how. My current hunting-party has seven people with attack/Defense above 35 (preferably above 40) and somewhat decent weapons and armor. The trick is fighting them 1:1 and keep all Characters who don't fight away from them. My hunting party is always on hold and I trie to get far enough from my base so noone from there comes to "help". When I spot beakthings I just order 1 of my hunters per beakthing to kill it and take care to move them far enough apart, so no one gets aoe-damage from another beakthing. They easily block most of the attacks from "their" beakthing and kill them without taking much damage. Of course I avoid to numerous groups of them, like you find them at the nests, but with a large enough group that would work the same way, it's just a lot of micro-management.

Gut is by far the best place to settle imo. Beak Things are a benefit. They attack invading parties, they provide a good source of food and leather, they are honestly pretty good for training mid-level characters into absolute behemoths (and frankly even low-level characters with good equipment can 1v1 a beak thing relatively well). I almost always settle in Squinn first, or the Swamps, and then move to Gut when I have a few mid-level characters.

I tried Gut once. I chose a peninsula in the very center so my enemies have to face b-things first. Then I put walls on the perimeter with the gate far from the land to push them swim. It was actually pretty peaceful time! B-things are not so scary and great for training. You can trigger them one-by-one and micro manage so only one of your soldiers is in front of the beast(and take hits) and the other dudes kick it in the ass. If you clear the nest and grab eggs, I'm not sure but it looks like they vanish from that point. Because one of the nest was inside my future base so I took cear of it first. Gut is in the center, you have several cities to trade. I had a robots commune so I captured a dozen of headless robots in Black Desert and put them on the walls I tried to capture and sell No-Face dude (who is right on the east of my peninsula, on an island, it called "strange camp" on the map) - I saw a guide that you can became a friend with b-things. But it didn't work for me.

There is a reason it has an easy/hard tag, it is deceptive; You should and need to treat them as a "better" version of Nobodies, what you should do is from your waystation move to the nearest friendly city, buy a house, then task 5 of your crew to mine the surrounding nodes and your veteran solider with gearing up, research and hiring muscle. Spend your time there researching to at least all tech II, you likely won't be able to research tech III due to the limitations of building profiles, but you can try if you manage to buy a big house, but tech II is good enough as it gives you all the essentials for self reliance, from making your own bandages, to beds to more importantly, ranged base defences and actually good power generation and both alcohol and fuel production. Alcohol and narcotics are the highest and most efficient ways to make Cats in Kenshi and are the least burdensome to transport. You'd also want to bring 25 of each crop you plan to cultivate with you on the journey (the 10 you start with isn't even enough to feed the 6 people!), by the time you're ready you've long since run out of the Gohan you started with, so save up and buy a lot of Gohan, Meat Wrap or Food Cubes for the journey and to keep everyone fed until you have XL crops set up. You likely won't have the space to fit 60+ crops in your bags, so you bring enough to build mediums then upgrade those mediums into XLs and while you're doing that you need to live off the rations you bring with you. Bring enough building materials to build a shack, a bed in said shack, a Stone Mine, Inner compound walls and storage bins for ore and food (you likely won't have enough space to bring enough to build all your walls, so focus on just a core defensive castle you can all flee into if danger approaches, you can tear these down once you build walls around everything, or not), ranged weapons and bolts for all your peons so they can stand on the walls and fire down on anyone assaulting your gatehouse (I recommend an L bend set up with your raised defences, be it a wall or building overlooking the outside of the gatehouse, otherwise they won't have line of sight, the AI is coded to prioritize the gate during assaults, they only go after walls if they have broken through the gate). Alternatively, if you want to pack lighter bring two-thirds the amount of building materials and Build a Stormhouse with a makeshift wall and gate around it instead and position your ranged guys and crossbows on top of the Stormhouse. Bring enough steel plates to build the STC... I mean Stone Processor, Iron Refinery and Arrow Making Bench to craft bolts. First thing you should do is set up your mine to construct building materials, use said materials to build a well, get to producing water right away. Once you have enough water to put one in each crop, set up your crops and water them. You'd want to upgrade your crops to XL instead of using them to make food right away. If you only have 6 people, you can live off two large crops of any food type. But, if you have 20+ people, you'll need multiple XL crops immediately to be self sustaining, as you'll run out of the supplies you brought with you by the end of the first week otherwise. Also, if you set up in "safe" zones which are in the middle of no where, like Fog Islands or the outskirts of the map; No trade caravans will come visit you, so you're on your own. But nasties will! So you have to be ready before hand with the capacity to venture to cities on your own to buy books etc. Gut is in my opinion just a better Shem; Only issue is, the UC will come to tax you in Gut and Gut is inside UC territory (As the Freedom Seekers the Old Soldier is ex-UC military so they'll be nicer to you than the Nobodies), while in Shem you'd get Dust Bandits trying to extort you; Upset the Dust Bandits, if you're strong enough, eventually they'll give up on going after you; But, if you upset the UC, you're in for a world of hurt, doesn't matter how strong you are, oh and they'll enslave you, while the Dust Bandits will simply loot your base and leave you all for dead, in their case you can all limp back to beds. But, I'd take fertile soil over arid, because in arid zones everything except green fruit and cactus takes forever to grow and both hemp and rice won't like growing there at all and those are your cash crops. Also Gut is in close proximity to some of the friendlier neutral factions in the game such as the Tech Hunters, Anti-Slavers and Crab Raiders. The Reavers will leave you alone if you stay on your side of the fence or if you have no problems with slavery or you're not an escaped slave, they like to keep to themselves, despite their nasty name, they're more or less an isolationist version of Caesars Legion from Fallout, to them you're nobody and not a conquest target; Their focus is on a macro level, not a micro level and they're in a cold war with the UC.

after i learned how to become allied with the beak things (gutters) Gut became a favorite find the npc No-Face and knock him out and take him to a slave market and drop him on the floor in the slave shop and he gets enslaved, now the important thing is to make sure No-Face is unconscious when you buy him, his unconscious body plops out of the cage so pick him and putt him down again and after spending around 450,000 cats, have one of your lads check if the beak things attack or not

There's actually an area on the southern shore of Gut that has relatively flat land and has both an iron tree and a copper formation in close proximity. I always build there If I'm aiming at taking on the UC in that playthroufh but I dont have enough manpower to handle the inevitable counterattacks. I just let the Beak Things do most of the work.

Theres a dude on an island in Gut sitting in a chair. Stealth KO him and turn him in for bounty and then instantly buy him and free him. It raises your rep with him and the beak things and after about 400k cats worth of rep grind like that you will be allied to beak things and they will protect you. Even more badass is to pick up a few of them and drop them in a Holy Nation city. The dude is instantly KO when you buy him so when he falls on the ground the slavers instantly throw him in a cage. Just buy him back and keep repeating the process.

In the basegame there's an NPC in the beakthing faction. If he gets enslaved (doesn't matter by whom), whoever buys him out of slavery will get +rep with the beakthing faction. So technically it IS possible to ally the danger-giraffes in the base game.
