Why You Should Run The Pistol in the Spread

I completely agree with this philosophy offensively. I don’t know why more coaches don’t build an inside run game out of a pistol spread. The concept puts so much stress on a defense due to the defense being forced to remove guys from the box and I like the running start from the hybrid I the pistol creates

How well does misdirection work for you out of Pistol.. For example, play is going Right.. Back takes a jab step or 2 Left and then comes in front of the QB to take the hand off going Right.. IE, sort of like a counter, then off that possibly have the QB fake that and pull back going left.. (pin and pull in a way) .. Your video's are awesome btw.. thank you

You read my mind for some odd reason. I changed my offense to the pistol. When you have backs coming out of the backfield especially in the air raid, linebackers and corners key off of their alignment. When I went to the pistol I noticed he would out flank the linebackers as fast as usual. Also coach, it’s time to get MSU lanyard. Cougs are going to be 🗑 😝

@@CoachMcKie one of the main things I took away is this pistol makes it easier for the QB rather he's a thrower or runner or both and for the RB. You can get all of the pro style looks as well so I don't understand why NFL offenses don't use pistol more often than under center especially when most QBs coming out are in pistol or the gun 90 percent of the time. It would streamline their success a lot quicker just off of confortability. You're teaching vids are awesome man!

I love the concept. However, I hand off the ball to the opposite side and teach them to "cut" against the grain. Tiger Ellison in his "Popcorn Series" would hand off on the opposite side of the trap From his Run & Shoot scheme of the early 1960's.

coach...when you speak of "2 high"....are you mainly in dealings with zone concepts...like 4 quarters?? cause i hate 2 high (cover 2).....1 high actually gives you more deep defenders if you consider cover 3....which covers up more holes medium to deep wise than a plain cover 2...don't you think? whats your facts or opinions on that? if i ever was to run 2 high...best believe it would be a cover 4 concepts with maybe bringing the safeties in just a little bit...

In order to eliminate the apex player when you go sidecar, could you 1) send that player in motion pre-snap to the other side and just run a slant concept with your R behind him, or 2) could you go with a two back sidecar set to eliminate that apex player?

Last year from watching a bunch of LSU I noticed Joe Burrow would pivot and almost end up in the same position as a QB would be making the handoff in a pistol set. Almost not allowing the back to cross his face. When they played Mike Leach and the Boys two weeks ago this technique was completely missing.

Coach McKie Yes, we’ve ran it from pistol. The downside is you lose any read/RPO. We will run a “bootleg” off of the action though. The jab step and reverse open by the QB causes the LBs to either take a step in the wrong direction or at least freeze them, allowing the OL to get in a better position
