I’ve read ‘Faithful and the Fallen’ and the overuse of fading to black really turned me off to the series. I’ve tried Gwynne’s other series as well and just couldn’t get into them. I also struggled with Rise of the Ranger by Quaintrell. But that might just be because it’s narrated by my least favorite narrator.

As someone who thought Stormlight Archive was really bad and thought WoT was meh, but loves Memory, Sorrow & Thorn, Second Apocalypse, Book of the New Sun and Wizard Knight, Asoiaf, Earthsea, Malazan and Black Company, is this something for me? I want a new epic series. Red Rising was underwhelming and kinda cringe. Sun Eater is currently filling the void, but im up to date as of now

That's a tough one because it looks like we don't have a lot of overlap. I DNF'd MS&T because it was moving too slow (and I was in a slump at the time) and I just started ASOIAF and am only done with the first book. I haven't gotten to any of the others yet. I would say it's worth giving a chance to since you can get the first novella (The Fall) for free by signing up for his newsletter. If you read that and are intrigued, I would continue because he gets better as a writer with each book. But if it doesn't interest you at all, then probably not for you. Other books/series I would also suggest looking into: The Riftwar Saga - Raymond E. Feist The Ember Blade - Chris Wooding Dandelion Dynasty - Ken Liu

If Brandon Sanderson were to write a classic fantasy series, this would be it. (Aside from wheel of time. The world and story was created by RJ so that doesn’t really count.)

I always like Why You Should Read videos, this was a good one! I’m thinking OBAF will probably be the next physical book I start. I actually liked The Fall (even though novellas usually aren’t my thing) and I think I’ll enjoy his novels even more.

@@PatrickRyanBookReviews I get not liking novellas. With most of them I’m like “it was fine but I wanted more”. I think it’s really hard to write a satisfying story with so few words and if he can pull that off I can only imagine what he can do with a full length novel.

@@alexsedai I agree - you usually only get a surface level story, but often you still have to pay full price or nearly full price to get the novella. I want to read the series sounds interesting. Especially since the game of thrones comparison gets thrown around a bit and I’ve never read it but seen the show so when I read it I’ll miss out on some of the effect of some of the surprises. But for bound and broken as much as I want to read it I can’t justify myself paying $100 for one book when it’s the basic edition that’s actually ridiculous and I can’t read digitally which is definitely the way to go in this case because it’s a lot cheaper but I get headaches from reading on screens too long

  • @PatrickRyanBookReviews

I haven't read or watched Game of Thrones, so I'm not sure if the comparisons are warranted or not. $100 is ridiculous and I'm confident even Ryan Cahill will say not to pay that much for the book. I'm not sure where you're at, but the actual retail price in the U.S is around $25 per book. My understanding is that Amazon does this thing where they will rotate who the primary seller is and that's why the price sometimes jumps up like that. If you're open to audiobooks, the narration for this series is fantastic. Otherwise, my suggestion would be to periodically check the price to see if it went down. If you're in the U.S. you can also check the bookshop.org link I posted in the description. Admittedly, the listings from bookshop.org are usually a couple bucks more than Amazon, but the profits go to benefitting independently owned book stores.

I'm about halfway through Of Blood and Fire now and so far I am not impressed. So far this is one of the poorest written books I've read in awhile. I've heard that he didn't use an editor for this first book and you can definitely tell by all the mistakes in it. I've already bought the first 2 books and the first 2 novellas so I'm going to continue; I've heard this book is by far the worst of the bunch so I'm hopeful. But for now I will say this series has absolutely no place whatsoever being mentioned with WoT, SA or LotR.
