Why You Should NOT Remove Swirl Flaps on BMW N47 / N57

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video I talk about how swirl flaps work and exactly whether or not you should consider removing the swirl flaps on your BMW N47 or N57 engine intake manifold.
The N47 is the 2L diesel and the N57 is the 3L diesel from BMW and both engines share the same design, just with one being a 4 cylinder and the other being a 6 cylinder engine.

From an engineering point and thousand of miles done in an N57 data-logging, I can tell you that Swirfflaps do not increase fuel consumption and are there only for emission purposes and that is to increase EGR gas flow at lower rpm'/load and in the cruise. Remove them in conjunction with EGR removal only and you will see massive gains in MPG. Swirl flaps should not be removed while EGR is still functioning

Swirl flaps don't increase the amount of air into a cylinder when closed, what the swirling air does is improve fuel and air mixing partly as a result of the angle it enters the combustion chamber (like you said) but also because of the increased air speed, which helps light throttle emissions, power and economy.

I've got an N47 with the brass bar going through the intake for the swirl flaps. The end flap was badly worn: where the bar goes through, as if the flap was stuck and the bar wasn't, causing friction/wear on the plastic flap. It was so worn that it was about to fall off. Luckily we spotted this beforehand and removed the offending flap. 135k on the clock.

Great video I learned a lot from your stuff George keep it up. My personal opinion delete them swirl flaps. Yes there is a good reason for them being there but the potential damage they can do if they fail out weights the benefits. 100% delete them! I’m saying this cause The bar wore out and broke on my n47 and destroyed anything and everything to do with the cylinder that ate it. Could have saved a lot of money and still had a fully functioning car if I had deleted them earlier

Thought I recognised the name, thanks for the comment on my upload George. I appreciate what you're saying with this one, but it really doesn't apply to my 330D as you recommended. And with the correct coding out and remapping, the car runs 100% better than it did. The restriction of air flow over the flaps was quite unbelievable in my opinion, removing a combination of parts (EGR/Swirl Flaps/DPF(if you choose) can prevent you from having to fork out on HUGE diagnostic & repair bills.... ever again. It all depends on what you are comfortable doing at the end of the day, and I have no regrets. The car feels amazing. Keep up the good work mate.

No problem my man. Likely worth removing on the M57 engine but not the later N57 engine. You’ll notice a big increase when you remove EGR and remap yes but do that first and then remove the swirl flaps and you’ll notice the drop in low down torque and MPG overall 👍🏻

  • @brarautorepairs

    @brarautorepairs

    Ай бұрын

Yes, I'm doing the replacement now and it is basically built into the gasket. The design is much better and the software also is improved to prevent the breakage by looking at the voltage at the motor. If it detects a large voltage or current draw, then the flap is disabled. Carbon basically is preventing the flaps from opening properly. I have a garage full of black carbon. Who thought this was good for the environment needs to be bought in front of a congressional hearing! The emission standards don't take into account of the impact of actually replacing all these parts? What about the economic impact? I'm sure the average car owner would has to pay a dealership to replace the intake manifold would just toss the car out after a few emission part failures. Look at the owners manual for the diesel - in Canada - it says replace all the emission related parts at 160,000 Kms! Yes, the NOx and O2 sensors are included in the regular maintenance with the text saying the emissions will increase past this point. This is rediculous. We need a law for emission parts to last the life of the car or to be fixed by the manufacture. Watch how quickly the life will increase of the parts.

My BMW independent mechanic mentioned a manifold leak (not sure from where but there is lot of carbon soot built up around manifold & cover). My 2008 X3 E83 N47 2.0d is showing 3 glow plugs faults, so while we are replacing Glow plug might get manifold replaced. Was going to order cheap Manifold without flaps from eBay but he advised to buy one from reputable parts supplied with flaps and actuator motor given Genuine costs $2.5k in Aus. So after having seen your video it explains why he asked me to stick to original setup. Very nice animation by the way. You X3 N47 videos have really helped me understand how my car drives. Hopefully with your helpful advice and Timing chain hanging in there, I can get from 200k km to 250k before I dump this car. Not sure if I want to touch any of injectors just yet, one of them is starting to leak very slight diesel though)

Let's also mention that these swirl flap round gates falls down from the tube and enters the engine combustion chamber, unless you're lucky enough where they get stuck right before the engine valves. When tuning my bmw at some point I had to remove the EGR and also remove these swirl flaps, So when I checked I found two swirl flap gates were already stuck and could destroy my engine at any time, luckily I removed them In the correct time.

Invested in an ENET cable and got a copy of ISTA+ I've got this showing "The monitoring detects two possible fault causes: - Detection of a broken lever between swirl-flap controller and swirl flaps. - Detection of excess wear of swirl flaps kinematics." Then in another place I've got the following: Actuator position: -4.75% Actuator Desired position: 5.01% EGR position: 0.00% EGR activation signal: 0.01% EGR Nominal Value: -9.99% How big of a job is it to get that inlet off? Bullshit, you just need to keep them clean. It is quite easy to remove intake manifold in M47/M57 engines, you need to remove it while replacing glow plugs, it is good opportunity to clean intake manifold and check swirl flaps condition. Done it twice. There is also an option to replace intake manifold with reinforced (brass) swirl flaps, and that's what I would suggest in older engines.

I do occasionally put the car in sports/sports+ just to other get a smile on my face, show off to mates the insane torque, sometimes do traffic light style launch, but I always do take care of it and engine it’s looked after and I’m at 60:40 Motorway:City driving ratio The car is currently at 88k (was 81k when I got it)

Good luck when the shaft remained in the blocked position, and you have no power no preasure in turbo, the dpf does NOT regenerate, gets dirty, and then people from bmw shops tell you that new air intake (only oem) its 900€, plus the dpf clean 200€, turbo clean 200€, and nasty egr full of unburned diesel gets stucked. • @justmemyselfandi5532

This with screws falling in to engine is bit of a lame. - throttle bodies flaps are since beginning of time held by screws and usually what is done is that you "punch" in back side of your screw and there is nothing that can "unscrew" it. Screw becomes bit notched and does not come out if you do not grind it off. Oil catch can should help to minimise soot build up, and skip annoying intake manifold cleaning. On my Pierburg intake manifold screws are glued and they do not come off. I think I can only brake them.

George (when your back from the ring) I need your help along with fellow youtubers when it comes to N57 inlet manifolds!! My colleague was quoted £800 to replace his inlet manifold on his 2011 330d motor due to fault 24CF00 coming up relating to mass air flow. I decided to help him and remove the manifold to remove the carbon from the swirl flaps yet the fault code is still present straight after clearing it. I am convinced its the MAF sensor that's at fault but need some guidance from the gang.

  • @GeorgeAusters

Is there a hole burnt in the manifold? The EGR valves can stick open and burn a hole in them. I’ve never seen a MAF sensor actually fail but could still be at fault or it could be o2 sensor related.

It starts up fine but after a minute it idles very rough (car shakes, headlights flicker, revs drop...sounds like its going to break down) for about 5-10 mins. Once it warms up, it runs fine, drives fine and doesn't smoke. Had a engine light on, code stated it was the swirl flap motor. So got a swirl flap delete and an egr delete. George Austers Low rpm cause excessive vibration and that is when flywhell work at most and put a strain on it as it try to minimise them plus turbo is not running at all or not in Full range . No if you get your self different turbo that spools earlier than factory model. Some of them spool quite good from 1200rpm, so if you like to experiment, that is the way you should go, or just leave these flaps there. If you have tons of soot on them quickly build up you have bigger problems to sort out, than swirl flaps. Properly functioning diesel engine shall run for many many happy miles as long as combustion is not to rich, or inefficient.
