I think maybe because people are expecting bad things happen to them after taking the rocks. They start to notice horrible things in their life that they would normally just put down as struggles in a standard existence.

I love how the intro is all jolly and happy sounding then he starts talking about tragic deaths

Petrified - ie scared stiff, like a tree has been turned to stone, an inanimate object. Stevie was essentially right but it's not really linked from medusa. :)
