Buying a BMW M3 E46? Then this is the video to watch. In this buying and depreciation guide of the BMW M3, I am showing you the full depreciation curve and the depreciation per 1000 miles driven. Furthermore, I show you which factors are driving the prices. Also, we will find out how the prices moved historically and where they might be going.

The video is structured in a top-down way. That means that we first have a look at the full market and some general price levels. After this, we will dive into the details.
Specifically, this means that the video for the BMW M3 E46 is split into a few parts. We will start by having a look at the full market and some general numbers. You will see for example that the market is quite small and that the bright colors are quite rare. After this, we have a look at the depreciation numbers. When we look at the depreciation per year, we can see that the curve is completely flat. Hence, the market bottomed out. For the depreciation per 1000 miles this doesn’t go. The cars are clearly still sensitivity to mileage. As we will see in the video, the mileage is not the only important aspect for the price. Also the roof type and to a lesser extent the transmission play an important role. At the end of the of the video, I will show you how the prices developed historically and where they might be going. It turns out that, in line with the rest of the video, prices remained flat over het last year. Also, it seems to be so that prices slowly started to increase. There are though still many cars out there which you can pick up between 10k and 20k. To me, at this pricepoint, this seems to be the ideal sportscar. The market position is ideal for some car hacking. Hence, I do think that you can drive around with this car without loosing any money on it. After all, it is not depreciating anymore.

I purchased an m3 e46 two years ago, I added the carbon fiber air intake form the CSL and a 4.10 rear diff ratio( BMW part). I don't care about how this effects the price, it sounds cool and it goes better! I also drive it when ever I want and never think about how this effects it's value as I will never sell it. The worst thing I could do is not drive it because of depreciation...who cares.. life is short!

I did something similar to you. I bought mine with over 100K miles because I didn't want to worry about putting on more miles. I've also customized it to my liking.

I have been following the E46 for years now in Europe as it is my favourite M3. Manual coupes with low miles post face-lift are very rare an price-wise untouchable since a while ago, just like the Z3M coupe.

Personally, I'm mighty happy that I already found and purchased my manual hardtop E46 M3 in Laguna Seca blue a few years ago (required a 6 month hunt across the USA to find the config and condition I wanted) when my gut sense was that prices were about to start going up, and it was the most affordable time to buy the car I had dreamed of for 15 years. I love my E46 M3!!! What a car! So glad I bought it.

The BAT graphs say it all since March the market is red hot for these cars. And in a covid year too don't forget. I've been trying to get a convertible for the last six months, can't find a decent one under 100k miles that hasn't been modded for smg for less than $25k. Nearly won on BAT was outbid now there are zero verts for sale on there!

So, you have to consider what's happened in the last 6 months that has affected the market - COVID-19. Likely, several owners of low-mileage E46 M3s have been financially impacted and needed to sell their prized possession. Maybe. As for me, I can tell you that my 150K mile E46 M3 would be an outlier on these charts as I could easily sell it for $25K - $30K (I've been offered $25K and I'm not even selling the car). Great video by the way!
Exterior and interior color also makes a big difference, as are some very desirable options such as the ZCP package in the late model years that comes with upgraded brakes, beautiful forged BBS wheels and quicker steering. The super expensive e46s that sold for close to original msrp and above are all low miles manual coupe with either ZCP package or is an LSB exterior color model.

One distinction with the coupes: The non-sunroof models attract an additional premium. Also, for the love of all that is holy make sure the subframe and rod bearings are done; they need doing.

Great videos! Have you looked at any updated trends on the 2015 F-Type R since posting? It seems a similar trend over the past several months is taking place...curious if you think this is overall used car market related or real potential bottoming as well?

14 and 15 yr Jag F Type R the pre- facelift (which was utterly ruined by body work changes) has started to slow down from hitherto very fast depn to modest depn in last yr....they'll settle around £26-30k for a fsh low mileage one I think .. low supply of used cars in last 6 months has artificially increased prices 5-10% though yes you are right.

Don't expect any BMW dealership to have a competent mechanic to work on it - so shopping around First for a good, independent local mechanic is a prerequisite.
Wow that 50% coupe over convertible is eye opener...Worth saying car must be UNMOLESTED to be most valuable - eg original wheels, interior, ECU, exhaust,brakes,leads and hoses and air filters and bodywork...so many have fallen into the hands of those whom drive while leaning on the b pillar 😏

It took me 6 months of searching to find mine (Alpine White with Imola red interior), but it was an SMG. I bought it and did the SMG to manual conversion. My advice to you; if you want a premium car, you're going to pay a premium price. A cheaper M3 will likely need much maintenance and repairs. Case in point, I've already put more into my M3 than what I paid for it, but I could easily double the asking price (if I were to sell it).

SO... you care about the color more than about transmission type? In case you are considering SMG to manual conversion I would strongly recommend against it since that will most definitely affect long-term appreciation. These cars fetch top dollar unmodified. Just wait and look nationwide. It took me 2 months to find my perfect spec ('05 silver grey on black convertible with MT). My morning ritual included scanning entire FB marketplace, cargurus and cars.com.

@@aparfeno I didn't buy the car as an appreciating asset, otherwise I wouldn't have chosen one with 140k miles. I bought it to drive it and to make it my own. Funny thing is that my M3 looks waaay better and in newer condition than most with half the mileage.
