I destroyed a hard drive from an old computer that the fire department I belong to had. It had patient data from EMS calls that had to be reported to the state office of EMS. I just dismantled the hard drive to remove the platters and heated them with a handheld propane torch until the surface coating blistered and bubbled. No way there's any readable data left after that.

1:26 My two cents. I took out the hard drive disks. Wrapped them on plastic wrap. Put all that into a zip lock bag. Put the bag and its contents on a concrete slab and beat the sheet out of it with a hammer. It broke into tens of thousands of pieces. Mission accomplished.

Well, you know the most inexpensive personal shredders have a CD shred feature. I definitely don't like the blowback of CD shrapnel.

Never heard of using thermite except in emergency destruction scenarios. Hard drives usually get degaussed and then smashed with a sledgehammer. Pulverizers are typically used where available.

Yes I agree ! However someone recommended using thermite in the comments section of part 1 video. I have never used thermite. How about Crypto-shredding?

They make paper shredders that shred cds and dvds. Just another option to think of if you need a paper shredder.

Yes you can use a paper shredder. BUT the microwave looked cool. I just squeeze the CDs and they break. Thanks for watching.

CableSupply.com can't argue with the cool factor of the microwave.

What did you mean in your first segment you said be careful about doing something?, can you just get in trouble if you just throw a fit and throw the computer in the trash or what?, Thanks!

Always remove your hard drive if you have personal data on it.

We just stupidly took out our hard drive from the hp tower before keeping our pictures etc. destroyed the tower. Is there any way to use this hard drive to get our info. If not we’ll I guess we will live with it.

Short answer you can over write the data or take the SSD apart and brake up the chips.

OR..encrypt the data (AES 256) and destroy the key. This is called crypto-shredding. check out en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crypto-shredding.

It came out that CC Cleaner has malware on it. What program would you recommend to replace it?

  • @CableSupply

I do not have a recommendation for a replacement. The affected versions of the software are CCleaner 5.33.6162 and CCleaner Cloud 1.07.3191. or... look for a fix from CCleaner.

that must be some major hack of Piriform since they usually are a VERY reputable company and make good products. Ive been using them for almost a decade and thats a first.
